The million miles you quote is far better than many other countries you care to name, of course the thousands of illegals arriving seem to disagree with the racist allegations people like to throw around,or surely they would pick elsewhere. No problem my end. Hope you didn't read it as an aggressive post as that wasn't intended. Whilst I know that racism, sexism exists in this country I have a hard time just putting it down to minorities being exposed to it. I see the bigger problem as poverty and class structure. I don't really want to go into my own situation but let's just say as a white male I just can't accept the privilege I'm accused of having growing up. It was rough as hell for all of the families around us. We had families of all colour and religion and the one thing we had in common was that we all had nothing.
Well said when me and my 2 brothers came back from the states about 1957 with our parents because my mother couldn't settle we rented some poxy hovel for a few months till ma and pa could get something better.....I was lucky I had a bed my 2 elder brothers had to sleep on a thin mattress on the floor with coats to cover them.....really privileged it's all circumstances isn't it
Personally I don't think the privilege referred to generally in these discussions is the starting point of ones life but more to do with the trajectory your life follows. Some are born into upper class families some are not, how you progress and build on the starting point you have been given depends on many things, effort, education and ability, the same basics for everybody. As your life evolves then its progression is influenced by less tangible things. These can be more important than effort, education and ability. One of these is who you know i.e "it's not what you know but who you know" This is the privilege referred to, in my opinion. It is often easier to help people who have the same traits as you than those who don't. Historically in western society most positions of authority have been held by white males and this tends to perpetuate white males progressing even though others may have better skills.
Crikey didn't want a history lesson on how my life started and has progressed to what it is now.....just pointing out that we had it hard like masses of other privileged Whitey's.....and Western society having more white males in authority well you could throw out that eastern society would not have and they surely follow the same it's not what you know but who logic
Don't take it so personally it wasn't about you each one of us has had to work with the hand we were dealt. You're right each society tend to favour their own but as generally the conversations on here are about the UK that's why I said western.
