Yes, he 100% can. Those are the laws of the game. See M'bappe's goal here at minute 3:30: M'bappe is offside when the ball is played, but because Spain's number 12 gets a faint touch on it, it is a deliberate action by the defender, and therefore cancels the offside. It's also explained in this article: https://www.espn.co.uk/football/blo...goal-for-france-vs-spain-was-allowed-to-stand If you don't want to click the link, the explanation is: "When Hernandez played the ball through to Mbappe, the striker was definitely offside, in front of Spain centre-back Garcia. However, the offside law sets the position of players only relative to one another when Hernandez passed the ball. Mbappe becomes active for offside only when he becomes involved in the play or challenges an opponent. Garcia stretched for the ball in a desperate attempt to stop it getting through to Mbappe. That's classed as a deliberate play of the ball, and it resets the offside phase and plays Mbappe onside. Because Mbappe wasn't close to Garcia, and as such had no direct influence on the defender's failed interception, he is not considered to be challenging the defender. The quirk is that if Garcia had completely missed the ball, Mbappe would be offside. But Garcia did make contact, so the PSG striker is onside and he did the rest." Our defender who made the headed clearance is analogous to Garcia in the Nation's League Final, except the header was quite obviously much more deliberate than Garcia's touch, therefore the QPR lad was even more obviously onside... As for the bit of the rules you have quoted, it literally states "is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by….. gaining an advantage by playing the ball" (your quote). My post immediately before yours quotes the laws of the game stating that "a player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball is not considered to have gained an advantage". The highlighted bits explain why the law you're referring to doesn't apply in this situation.
It will be rewritten mate, some people just can't let it be. If it had been allowed I'd have come away quite happy having seen us put up a good show. Certainly not agonising over the decision the way some people are.
IMO the offside happened in the initial build up. The ball was crossed in and there was 2 offside, but jogging back. One of them them became active immediately after getting into an onside position. It was this player that crossed the ball in for the initial shot. So yes the linesman was right - the bloke was deffo offside, but the linesman just delayed putting the flag up. I am right, always am!! Bart
100% agree. It was definitely offside. Thus has to be right as the final score was 0-0 and the goal was ruled out. Whether he was in an offside position is completely irrelevant. Besides, as I’ve said before, this is an offside. There was a bloody awful challenge the ref and his assistant both missed which left a player inured. Far bigger error. 10 men for an hour would’ve made it a totally different game
Last night was the perfect set up for McGeady to blast the ball into the net right in front of the Sunderland supporters ... ... but somehow the penalty shoot out made it even better. Burge had been excellent and deserved him moment of glory, I bet he's already looking forward to the next round.
Burge last night looked like the keeper I thought we’d signed. Played very well in every aspect of his game
I want one of the top clubs at home. Liverpool Chelsea or Man City. Be expected to lose so just hope we can give them a scare. Done enough travelling. Not me personally just the players.
I'd agree with that mate. A big club under lights, a good night and a defeat to a dodgy offside goal ... ... I'd rather lose at home to Liverpool than at Wembley tbh. The league is so much more important but I'm betting KLD is loving this cup run.
I think this cup run has got everyone excited about the club - more than KLD taking over and putting things in place behind the scenes. We're playing good football in the league - apart from a few blips. And that's what they're are turning out to be. But this cup run is firing up everybody's imaginations for me. No one is really bothered about how far we get but everyone is getting excited at just what is being produced on the pitch in these cup games. We can see what the future could be like when the kids have played and got results and last night showed just what the near future could be like. It wasn't a Championship team against League 1, we more than held our own and gave them a serious game - so much so that they brought (what I think he probably will be) their main striker on and it still wasn't enough (less said about the disallowed goal the better). It's kinda crept up on us but we're now in the quarter finals with the so called big boys and we could just find out how good this team could be! And THAT in itself excites me - bring them on!!
Quite funny hearing QPR fans raging. Especially considering the absolute dogshite refs we have week in week out.
So that is our quarter-final line-up complete. Arsenal, Chelsea and Sunderland are joined by Tottenham, Leicester, Liverpool, Brentford and West Ham
Rather have them at home, bring that miserable Scottish bastard back to the SOL see the fans let him know how popular he was here.
That's why he's classed as onside. He only became active when he was onside. Anyway, home draw against anybody but Chelsea in the next round and I think we've got a decent chance of going further...
Great post mate, Things aren't always as superficial as they appear. Any potential signings/loans will be looking closely at Sunderland now. Seeing the likes of Dajaku, Doyle, Alves, etc, playing in the first team and through to the quarter finals will encourage players to come here. Managers will see how good the team spirit and coaching is so will be happy to send their young lads. It's miles away from the ageing mercenaries and the drinking culture, many miles away.
