When I first started playing regularly, I just happened to join up with a threesome on the first tee. At that time I was pretty crap and was just learning the fundamentals of the game.
Don't know whether it was nerves being with 3 total strangers, but I had an awful front nine.
There was a snack bar (sold beer too) at the 10th tee, and one of the fellas bought a round for his 2 mates and asked me if I'd care for a beer, which I gladly accepted.
As he handed me the bottle, he asked me if I minded him saying something he'd noticed about my grip. As I always liked getting feedback from better golfers, I said please do.

He said my grip was fine except for one thing. I was holding the clubshaft too tightly.
He said imagine you are lightly holding a bird's feather between the shaft and your lower hand's third finger. Then imagine the pressure on the feather at point of impact with the golf ball is loose enough to dislodge the feather so it falls out of your grip to the floor.
That's all the pressure you need on the shaft.
Best tip I've ever had - my game improved immeasurably from that point on ! So simple, just one of many factors your muscle memory needs to learn to hit the ball consistently.

These days my driving range is about 40 miles....To think I used to do 74 miles a day to get to and from work! Was I mad or what?

I haven't played for years but I played quite a bit before I moved here.

One year one of our sales conferences was at Mission Hills in China. At the time they had 10 full size courses, and now it's up to 12. Everything knocked off early so we could all play a round before the evening drinks etc.

Now I'm left handed so I had to very carefully explain that I needed lefthanded clubs as we were all using rentals. One of the last days I didn't actually check they'd given me the correct clubs when I jumped in the buggy. So when the caddy (everyone got caddies!) hands me the driver on the first tee it's righthanded.

I ended up playing the full 18 with the wrong sodding hand! I don't think I hit the fairway once <laugh> I just zigzagged down the rough with my long suffering caddie asking me if it was my first time. I had a swing like a frog in a blender.

You won’t do it with a 4 iron, apologies if someone has already put this just noticed the thread. I can hit a ball with my driver 300+ yards, only problem is it’s 200 straight then a hundred or so off to the right. THE most annoying and brilliant game to play !!!!
    Ps. Relax your shoulders!!!!

I used to golf with a lad who was a cacky-hander, he was a very good golfer and brilliant batsman at cricket; thing is - he bowled left handed, batted right handed, and played golf with right handed clubs but held the club with left hand below right - it was awful to look at him addressing the ball but, he could really play!

Must be a cricket thing, both Anderson and Broad bowl r. handed and bat left. The golf thing is bizarre, I'm off in the garden to try it!

Try using left handed clubs then you'll know real frustration LOL

Just had another lesson ! Read every magazine watched almost every website like Shiels and after many years now stand correctly grip it correctly and swing pretty well but need consistency. The pro is giving me that but ageing memory means it has to be simple. The improvement was instant but by the weekend 50% of the adjustments will be gone. I love it . The house I moved into has mirrored wardrobes in the back bedroom - honest !! But it’s brilliant for copying what you see and checking positions and angles - all golf keep at it golfers and City fans
