Former player George Kinnell died at the weekend. Second cousin to Jim Baxter, he was a no nonsense player who after retiring ran a pub in Sedgefield. Chant at the time Who the hell are we for We are ****ing hell. Nice play on words, RIP big fella.
Great player…. Todd, Kinnell, Baxter… what a half back line! There was a bit of a backlash as some felt McColl had replaced King Charlie owing to his Irishness, but there was no doubting George quality.
My 1st ever SAFC was at Craven Cottage in '67. George and Toddy were centre backs at that time. We got beat 3-1,Colin Suggett scored our goal I bought a rosette at that game (Remember them??) RIP George
I was at St James’ Park for the derby game when Wyn Davies made his debut for the scum, George Kinnell wrapped him up good and proper. R.I.P George and thanks for the memories.
sad news your generation owes you a debt of gratitude for your loyal support, and we offer our condoleances R.I.P.George
Comedian Jimmy Jones used George in a bit he used to do about Mackems swearing. "if a shot just misses the post all the Mackems say, Kinnel. or something along thoes lines. All in good humour. RIP,Sir.
