Cyclist, everyone should know that you should sit behind a HGV, let them go, you should sit back behind the lorry and let you see them in your wing mirrors. If you need to overtake them do it on the outside - unless they're turning right -. Don't get involved, I've seen many lorry v bike and it's not nice.
Hmm, as much as it pains me to say it, I think the HGV is probably in the right here as far as the law goes. As far as common sense goes, and as a keen cyclist, that would never happen to me as I would have waited either behind him or far enough in front to catch his eye to let him know I'm there. BUT, under the new rules of the Highway Code soon to be implemented, the HGV driver would be in the wrong.
