Whilst seeing the wee man as a TV football pundit the other night I wonder if he would now be interested in an offer of the manager's job at Pompey. I know he turned it down once before , when he joined Celtic instead, but would he make a good manager despite his previous record on the South Coast. I think he still has a house down this way what are your thoughts fellow football fans? His wiki says he has a preference to play an attacking 4-4-2 with an occasional 4-5-1 formation, perhaps that is just what we need and he has a wicked and legendary sense of humour! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Strachan
I'm not convinced personally, following his record at Boro. He seemed intent on bringing in a Scottish starting 11 - most of which simply didn't perform well in the Championship. I read today the Dowie's odds has been cut to 9/2. This worries me greatly. I see him as nothing more than a last resort, for teams already looking down both barrels when it comes to relegation. I would like to see Jones, but that appears to be a non-starter if The News are correct. Otherwise I'd also like to see Lee Clark given a chance in the Championship, but I don't know if we would be able to temp Huddersfield into letting him go.
I can't see it happening - he's way out in 9th place at 22/1 with the bookies. Interestingly enough Dave Jones has replaced Sean O'Driscoll as favourite yet again today. It seems it's going to be one of those two.
Watching his Celtic team was a soul destroying experience. We'd pass the ball sideways for 85 minutes, lose a goal and the last five minutes would be frantic mayhem as we pushed forward to score two goals (which we did with a remarkable consistency.) You can't argue with his success though. Putting aside his league wins in Scotland he took us to the last 16 of the CL twice which is no mean feat when you consider the state of Scottish football, even when he was here. The biggest mistake he made at Middlesbrough was buying a ****load of over the hill or over-rated or injury prone Old Firm players. If he sticks to the English and foreign markets for players he could be a success. He has a fetish for buying midfielders though.
I give WGS my personal endorsement and my blessing. I'm sure we could forgive him for making the move to PO. A sensible transfer policy as mentioned above and he would be good for you.
It never worked for him at Boro but he is a good manager but he is a bit abrasive although I think he can use it to his advantage more often than not. He isn't much of a tactics master he sets him team out and rearly changes tactics and personel. His teams aren't great to watch but can be effective.
WGS would be a brilliant choice. At Celtic he did an unbelievable job, taking over a long ball team, full of ageing over paid egotistic stars. WGS changed Celtic from the bankrupt trail Martin O'Neil had followed, to one of wage bill becoming within the means of Celtic. Gordon did not hide behind his cost cutting as his teams won 3 SPLs in a row, no other Celtic Manager had achieved that since big Jock. He also brought us to the last 16 in Europe. However, as usual he did not have to look far for his knockers and detractors. Rangers fans, believe it or not, had the cheek to talk about his tactics. As sure as night follows day, more and more gullible Celtic fans jumped on the band wagon and showed their "annoyance". Gordon has been got rid of and SPLs titles no longer come to Celtic Park. Good attractive football has made some appearances but without the League title, that is no good. Maybe we got rid of the hen that laid the golden egg.
I am not entirely sure about this, but I seem to remember that Harry got quite annoyed with WGS just after he left his spiritual home the first time and popped up at St Marys 10 minutes later. The reason was that Strachan had given a journalist a quote to the effect that he didn't think it would be possible for a Pompey manager to succeed with the Saints fans because of the deep rivalry, something which Harry described as "unhelpful". Of course a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then and people can change their minds. He is a fantastic manager and it would great to see him back in football, if only for the interviews.
Please not O'driscoll Saturday's opponents Doncaster seem to have improved since his sacking.I think that would be certain delegation
At least he'd give you something to smile about - his post match interviews at saints were pure legend, eg; Reporter: "Gordon, can we have a quick word?" WGS: "Aye. Velocity."
Because he is a professional. That is his job. He earns money to watch football and manage his team, whoever they may be. He can work with any side that will give him a job. You are a fan. You pay to watch football and therefore only have one team to choose from.
If Sean O'Driscoll becomes manager- I'd place abet we're going down this year. He is a clueless manager- not good enough for even the football league !! Dave Jones on the other hand- fantastic manager- I fully hope he is manager as soon as possible- many even for next week's weekend
