So there’s a clamour to try and sign Bonne permanently. Assuming this was an option for us is it a good idea?

obvs he’s scoring goals, he clearly loves the club and fans are enjoying him. But…

what’s the fee going to be? and is it worth breaking the bank for him?

A basic analysis suggests there is a flip side to this otherwise attractive coin. He’s not deemed good enough for qpr so if we go up, will he be good enough for us if we’re aspiring to go further? He’s likely a goal getter in L1 but the championship is a very strong division and big jump, especially at the top end. Don’t we want to be signing the charlie Austin’s for that level of league position?

we’ve got him for the season anyway so why not sit tight and see where we are at the end? I doubt he’s going to be a bargain option anymore.

in terms of his performances, I’m a fan, I love his commitment and his goals have been great to watch. But he’s missed some easy chances which worries me. Cheltenham was bad but some other good one v one chances have Ben spurned. He needs to bury these because they might be the only clear cut chances we get against good sides.

finally, he really should be scoring! He’s in a team set up to create chances aplenty so he’s just doing his job. If you buy enough tickets for the raffle eventually you win so is his goals record par for the course rather than anything exceptional?

He is a substantial upgrade on Norwood and is still a good age to really improve.

There certainly isn’t enough yet to write him off as not cut out for Championship football as he’s hardly played that much… and it’s been in a fairly disfunctional side that has gone through a manager change in his time with them.

That said, He doesn’t strike me as an out and out goal scorer, more of a good all round physical presence who can lead the line and make space and create chances for others.

I think the clamour is only natural given how he’s performed and the passion he’s shown for the club.. add into that the danger of him being recalled in January it makes sense to tie up any possible loose ends.

I hope we sign him, he’s a good age and a good player for our system

I don’t know what your source is?

It would be an absolute no brainer to sign him. The only forwards that could be mentioned in the same breath after Joe Royle’s side would be Alan Lee and Daryl Murphy. Perhaps Tom Lawrence too albeit a very short stint in a poor side. I think a lot will depend on our form, whether we go up and whether he really wants to stay. If we have any hope of doing this business I think it would have to be in January. I’m sure he won’t be short of offers at least at Championship level next summer.

Priority is to get out of this League and I see Bonne as a good bet to achieve that, obviously depending on the price.I would be very keen for us to sign him permanently and worry about the squad for the Championship as/when we get there.

Am I right in saying that McGoldrick was a similar age and with a similar goal scoring record (most of his goals being in L1) when we signed him?

albeit we got McG on a free and Bonne won’t be, but there is a lot of scope for him to improve (much like McG did) and with the momentum he’s gathering this season would be frustrating to see him go elsewhere

Think mcG was from forest? I like the idea he can only get better and that’s a good point about how he seems to fit so well into this system. We dont need Romario up top. Actually that would be fun…but the idea of a clinical finisher that has no appetite for pressing or bullying defenders isn’t going to work for us so perhaps we’ve stumbled on a perfect piece of the jigsaw and if the price is do-able we need to go for it ASAP then.

Take a look at Bonne's numbers and then tell me he's not worth paying for. Good strikers don't come cheap and that's probably been our downfall in the past under Evans, we always took the cheaper option. Bonne is the most lethal striker in League One at the moment.

I think over the summer Bonne was one of the least exciting transfers for us, he hasn't got a consistent goal scoring record, the most intriguing thing about him was that he's a town boy. I'm not sure many of us wouldve had him in the first team at the start of the season. But why would you not sign him when he's doing the business if we can?

You say he misses chances, even the best strikers miss chances but even so what the best strikers do is even if they've missed keep getting in good positions, and that's what he does.

I'm still not 100% convinced he can play the lone striker role, as I've said before in the games I've seen he's gone missing alot in the second half of games and even if you score as a lone striker its important that you're still a presense up front and I've felt he's gone missing sometimes. You can do that in a 2 but not as a lone striker.

He may have missed chances but looking at the numbers shows he is more clinical than every other striker in the league. Not sure how many games you've seen ptc but I think Bonne plays the lone role pretty well. He takes up good positions and poses a constant threat to the CBs.

A striker like Bonne is worth his weight in gold. So much so, I don’t even know why there’s a debate about it. He was even scoring when everyone else was playing ****e. He’s come to Ipswich to prove a point.

Yep, he's putting up the numbers and has the added x factor of absolutely loving playing for his club!

I think it was Lee Evans Or Burgess or somebody said in an interview that Bonne's attitude and passion for playing for his home town team is infectious and has been rubbing off on the other players. That is a rare thing these days.

He showed today he has the ability to bury a solitary chance when it falls his way, which he did in the morecambe game too tbf.

it’s a debate because, well, it’s always interesting to debate these things and hear what people think.

if we can afford him it’s got to be a good option. Any idea on his contract length and possible value?

his stats are great but id like to dig down to see how many chances he gets compared to others in L1 and what the conversion rate is etc. End if the day, if the others keep serving it up, he’ll get on the end if it and that’s the main thing.

that Stockton bloke is a bloody revelation too , eh? Morcambe are very decent, and that point might not actually be bad in the end..,

At the end of the day.....a striker is only as good as the service he gets. Cut the supply chain, we don't score. He is decent and you can't argue with his numbers but with our wide players creating chances now, who's to say that Piggot or Nogood wouldn't have scored loads.
Should we sign him, given the chance, hell yeah, we have the money so why not? Is he the next Mathie or Stewart.....nope! For this division though, he is more than good enough.

Norwood is a great finisher but he’s out on the piss all the time and doesn’t look after his body.

Numbers aside, Bonne is very quickly becoming our talisman. Others have shown glimpses of quality but he has been the headline grabber.

From Gio, to Williams, to Fraser, all too often have we not made a serious attempt to buy the player that kept us on our feet/afloat. So, signing him will be a positive step I think.

Sign him up….I know a few have berated the value that a loan player can have on a season but I think Bonne has shown that to be false

I’m sure this is directed at me and it does not prove my take on it to be wrong. My opinion is more nuanced than all loans are bad. I have got no problem with the odd situation where we need to fill a gap in the first team or when it’s been with a view to a permanent signing.

I have a problem when we have four or five loans in the squad, when they keep out our own players who are strong enough to play first team football and when they have no long term benefit to the club. There’s no question Bonne is a great signing but if he comes in as a prolific goal scorer and we are not promoted and no further forward next season it entirely proves that loan signings rarely have any positive impact for us in the long term. The very rare occasion when they come in and do spectacularly still doesn’t make up for the detriment to the development of our own players. It should be our own players playing spectacularly season after season. There’s no doubt in my mind that taken as a whole they are detrimental.

Just a little dig Hampy, I recall you claimed that a loan had never added enough to a team points wise to be worthwhile, or something like that.

I was under no impression that you’d hold your hands and admit you could of been wrong.

If you’re a manager and you can loan a player that improves your teams prospects of success either through a short or long term deal you take it over the development of inferior players because football is about results, not player development for the sake of it. I don’t know anyone in professional football that says loans are detrimental. We’re using the system well I think; we’ve got players in that add depth to the squad and, for the most part, a level of quality we wouldn’t otherwise have. Bonne isn’t keeping any homegrown talent out of the side or from doing any better in his position.

Away from that example, We could play kenlock at left back every time the industrious Penney is injured as ‘our players’ but I don’t se either being spectacular. Or we could borrow a very good player like coulson and have a much stronger pair of options in that position.

The situation where any League One club thinks loans are a good thing is much the same as working class people voting Tory. The system benefits the big clubs who loan players like Trevoh Chalobah to Ipswich so we can do their development, contribute to the wages and then cherry pick the occasional player for the first team and offload the rest. He’s undoubtedly the highest level of player but he brought no benefit to Ipswich Town.

Bonne is a player I’m happy to have at the club because prolific strikers are rare and we just don’t have the options but there’s no case whatsoever for Coulson to be at the club.
