Normally for my mate’s birthday p*** up, we go to the second last fixture at Beverley but circumstances mean that this year we are going to the last. The reality is that the racing is an excuse for some of them to get out for a few beers without the missus. It has to be said that this is not the greatest fayre – a few beers might make some of the juvenile races more palatable.

The ‘big race’ at 3 o’clock has attracted just four but three of them would be considered racing pensioners. Nine year old Brando will be odds on with ten pounds in hand on official ratings but will ten year old Danzeno be the forecast or the eight year old Tarboosh? In the following race there should be a long odds on shot as Karl Burke’s Guilded ran in a Longchamp Group 3 last time and is rated 94.

In terms of something to actually pay for the beer, I am attracted to the 2:25, a handicap for three year olds and up. Seven year old La Rav won over course and distance last time but his reward is to be raised 5lb. The second that day, four year old Arranmore, was subsequently second of three, hardly advertising the form. Tim Easterby has two in the race with Duran Fentiman on Give It Some Teddy, second in a mile Sandown handicap last time and dropping in trip, whilst stable jockey David Allan is on Ugo Gregory, third at Chester over today’s trip. Both of those should go well. Near the bottom of the weights, three year old BLU BOY was last of three on his latest start at Ripon when odds on but beat Urban War over this course and distance under today’s jockey, PJ McDonald, the time before and looks the one to be on if forgiving that no-show at Ripon.

Two of my former tips were out at Listowel today. Visualisation and Tut Tut both won at 7/2 and 5/2 respectively. The double paid a little over 14/1.

Straight Answer was awarded a rating of 112 by the Racing Post for yesterday's romp and that is a seriously good rating. I feel only group 1 class horses can reach 110 or more on ratings by their second lifetime start

Goldspur, who won last week met my criteria for a Derby contender at 3YO. He was winning at a mile and clocked a RPR of 95 on his debut. My guidelines are that a colt has to win at a mile and reach 85 or more on Racing Post figures on their debut.

You just know that punters looking for a once raced outsider for the Derby next spring would be looking at Goldspur and thinking about Hurricane Lane last season.

Hurricane Lane won over a mile on his debut when the ground was heavy and he earned a figure of 88 from the Racing Post, Although only 3rd at Epsom, he landed the Irish version and every other race he has been in.

Apparently the Appleby stable had not expected Goldspur to be ready for a performance like the one he put in on his debut. With so many nonsense no-hopers in the Derby betting, Goldspur has to be of interest to me.
