Grant quite rightly so deserves some stick, but a player that has been at one of the so called top clubs in Europe with some of the best coaches in the world, should not be doing that! That's down to the player and not the manager and or coach!... The players need to start stepping up

presumably he was watching the player McCann told him to watch - none of our players seemed to be watching the ball

Absolute bollocks HT2 and you know it.
There is no way on this earth that he would be coached like that at Man U.
    No wonder he looks confused.

    We're getting carried away again.

As Rick points out, Bernard was marking his man, Ben Davies, who had taken up a position outside the area. They probably wanted us to think he'd be making a late run, but really they just wanted to draw bodies outside the area. Hardly anyone was in there in the end but it meant Egan had loads of space for a tap-in once Sharp had successfully blocked Wilks from tracking him.

Their set piece plan trumped our defending and we need to improve on that, and yes it's McCann's job to do that. But again people are going a bit over the top raging at something they've actually misunderstood.

I keep watching this and I can’t fathom how someone coaches a team to defend like this. All their guy Egan has to do is find the ball and he has a free header. Sharp plays an absolute blinder. Who is attacking the ball FFS. Every time you lose a man playing like this they will score whoever we are playing. Now it’s the fault of the young lad from United. Ingram says they are all given a man so this is a nailed on tactic. I have never been in a team when we didn’t try to head the ball clear. Ok I wasn’t a pro but were we doing it all wrong ?

Surely after the first corner the opposition know who our centre halves have to mark. It must be easy then to pull the best defensive headers of the ball out of the set play. Is this right or am I missing something here ?

We really aren't getting carried away!
First off, it wasn't just this set piece.
Second, rather than just defending our own area, we fell hook line and sinker for their routines.
Third, who the **** coaches a player, or coaches in such a way that it results in players not even knowing where the friggin ball is?
It was pure gold comedy on several occasions. Except it wasn't funny for us.

Couldn't see what was going on but training ended at 16.45 today.

Apparently some fat bird called Shirley Crabtree took the session as Grant was struggling to get into his leotard.

So he just instantly forgot everything he has been taught and knows about defending, grant should answer for a lot but a player of that pedigree should know better

Yes it's completely normal if your man is that far out. The alternative is zonal, which I'm sure everyone would be very supportive of McCann implementing.

It’s multi-faceted. You expect a Man Utd youth player to know better, of course, but he is a kid after all. He ****ed up and will again this season. Most of the time, when a Championship team sign a young, promising centre-half from a top six team on loan, you expect them to be partnered up with an experienced veteran already at the club. When we signed Tomori and Hector on loan, Michael Dawson was already the heart of our defence. Bernard has Greaves as his partner, someone who is equally inexperienced at this level.

Whatever we’re doing at set pieces isn’t working, and that’s McCann and the coaching staff’s responsibility. But **** me dead do we need an experienced Championship centre-half who wouldn’t get ID’d on Prinny Ave.

We can go on about an experienced centre half till we're blue in the face. Everyone knows we need one but if the budget doesn't allow then there's knack all we can.

I'm certain Grant would have loved to bring in a quality centre half, and striker too but under the Allams there's no money for that so we have to make do. It's far from ideal, and will highly likely see us in a relegation scrap but its what it is.

THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO SET UP TO DEFEND AGAINST CORNER KICKS

Have this one on me Terry !

The best set up to have when defending corners is a mix of both the zonal marking and man marking tactics.

A study that looked 600 corners across 64 games in the 2018 FIFA world cup found that teams conceded more goals using a zonal marking strategy (6.0%) compared to a mixed marking strategy (3.7%).

They suggest having a player on the front and back post too as a part of a successful defensive set up.

Reference: Analysis of teams’ corner kicks defensive strategies at the FIFA World Cup 2018

Another effective zonal marking strategy is to place players in the space that is in front of the near post as shown in the diagram below.

This diagram shows the zones where players defending the front post area position themselves
A study that looked at teams that placed players in these zones found that the players won a combined total 31.5% of total corners that were delivered. This data was taken from 750 corners taken from 79 matches in the 2015/16 Premier league season.

The most effective combination of players in these zones would be to have 2 players in zone A and 1 player in zone B.

No he didn't, he literally just marked his man who was nowhere near the action. Wilks lost his man because of Sharp's block, and you could maybe say Coyle was partly culpable too for allowing Sharp to do that. Bernard did his job.

If we want to talk about Bernard's positioning, I'd be focusing more on the fact that in open play he quite often finds himself 20 yards ahead of the rest of the defence.

If that's what Bernard had been instructed to do, then yes you are right, he did his job and it's McCann / Byrne at fault ... which is what most of us are saying. Boom.
McCann and Byrne's lack of ability exposed yet again.
Anyway, bored with this now, and no matter what we type it won't change a thing.
We need new owners which will also mean McCann gone.

It's at least a relief to find out our **** defending is down to Man United, rather than our manager, I'm much happier now. <ok>
