A bit surreal Jimmy Greaves leaving us today on the Spurs v Chelsea derby day. I wasn’t alive when he played for Chelsea but I really used to enjoy his Saint and Greavsie show on ITV. RIP Jimmy.
Outstanding talent, one of the few players to make an impact in Italy; enjoyed his banter with Ian St John in the eighties. R.I.P Greavsie.
Been on the Spurs board having to correct them as to Jimmy Greaves and his loyalty. Hence. ‘My affection for the club has never been a secret,’ Greaves said in 1995, while reminiscing about his time on the Fulham Road. ‘It’s probably the greatest name in the world: Chelsea. You think about it. What does it conjure up? It conjures up the best part of the biggest city in the world. Chelsea! It’s magical. And they’ve never lived up to it, but I hope they do. I’m a great Chelsea fan, as you probably know. And I’d love to see it all happen.’ Well, it has all happened since those words, but most of those who watched him grace the Stamford Bridge turf would still say Jimmy Greaves is their special one.
Never saw him play, but his record is seriously great. One of the generation of players who were knockabout lads, ready for a laugh, and didn't take life too seriously. RIP
