With Arsenal playing Burnley and Leeds playing Newcastle United, if we can beat Watford 3-0 (or better) then we would climb out of the bottom 3, as although we would have then same points (3) and goal difference (-7) as Watford, we would have scored more goals than them, and If Arsenal beat Burnley that leaves Burnley on 1 point, but if they draw Burnley will be on 2 points and if they lose they will remain on 3 points but with a worse goal difference than us, and if Leeds beat Newcastle, Newcastle remain on 1 point, but if they lose they remain on 2 points and a draw leaves Newcastle on 2 points and Leeds on 3 points.
I also had that feeling, but it could also be a reassurance to players who won't be starting. Rupp is a better defensive player than Gilmour, but I suspect DF will want us to get at Watford and Gilmour or Normann would be better for that. DF also seems to imply that he will be altering lineups more for tactical reasons now that we have such quality in depth.
I can't see any purpose usefully served by that rant from DF. What has happened to his mantra "Ignore the noise"? The answer to criticism has to come on the pitch and the league table.
The Pinkun calls it a 'passionate monologue' which is a more apt description. 'Ignore the noise' is SW's mantra.
Newcastle 1-1 Leeds tonight is a good result for us with Leeds now having 3 points and Newcastle 2. A win tomorrow would put us right back into the mix.
In Portugal, there is a big supermarket chain called Continente. Of course, us childish Brits with our Carry On sense of humour used to love phoning our friends when we were there and saying 'I'm in Continente!'
One possible purpose for the speech was to get players accustomed to the idea that no one is 'first on the teamsheet' any longer and they will all have to get used to far greater rotation of players and that not being in the starting line-up does not mean you are out of favour???
If we are going to see genuine rotation, that will be a completely new departure for DF. And why would he start rotating when the work load in the EPL is far lower than In the Championship, when he seldom if ever rotated apart from for Cup games? On the contrary, if it was directed at the players at all, which I'm sceptical about, the message would surely be that Williams, Kabak, Gilmour and Normann haven't been brought in to sit on the bench. They are going to play and those who have been able to think of themselves up to now as near certainties to start have to get used to the idea that they no longer are.
My guess is that it's the latter, due to the quality in depth we now have. Cantwell found out against Arsenal where Dowell started on the right. It could also be that DF is tailoring his starting lineup to suit the opposition, giving the quality he now has. We need every player competing for their place to achieve consistency in the PL.
My impression is that Farke now has the tactical options and players to tailor the game plan dependant on the opponent whereas in the championship and the last time on the Prem we tried to impose our game on the opponents. That works in the championship where we are the better team 9/10 times but in the PL we need to be able to vary our approach from game to game.
