Nice performance from Raclette in France today. The daughter of Frankel was facing off against Welwal, both horses having won their first race. The form of both of those races had been working out really well but Jean-Claude Rouget's Welwal had to concede 3 lbs to the filly from the Fabre yard.

In the race itself, Raclette sat third, while Welwal was held up at the back. Welwal closed menacingly from the rear just as Raclette was being asked for her effort and at one stage they seemed to hold about the same chance but Raclette powered on more strongly and Welwal just seemed to start running out of juice at the same time, allowing the Fabre filly to establish a four length margin of victory at the line.

Surely group company for Raclette next and my eyes would be on the Boussac if she were my filly.

Interestingly Ger Lyons trains the 3YO full brother Licence, who landed a Gowran maiden by six lengths in June but has not been seen again thus far.

At Newbury only six line up for the Haynes, Hanson and Clark but it is an interesting affair.

Yibir won this race last season and Godolphin supply the favourite again, with King Of Conquest coming here after winning his sole start. This son of Lope De Vega cost 900,000 Guineas and could be smart for sure.

Bolthole is a real bargain basement buy in comparison at just 12,000 Euros but he made an excellent start to his own career. A son of Free Eagle, he is with Michael Bell and may be talented despite the relatively low purchase price. He is a market positive today.

I liked Westover, despite him being pretty weak in the betting today. The son of Frankel was in a race that seemed to turn into a sprint for the line last time. He knuckled down well though and the further they went, the better he looked, eventually winning with more in hand than had looked likely. He finished full of running that day and would have been well clear if the race were a bit longer that day. With Ralph Beckett, I think a strong pace would suit Westover and hopefully he can finish strongly today to land the spoils. He looked sure to improve and 7/2 seemed a better value option than the favourite.

    2.55 Newbury Westover 7/2

    3:20 Newbury - Bernardo O'Reilly 10/1 (7 places )
    3:30 Ayr - River Nymph 17/2 (5 places)
    6:45 Dundalk - Burning Lake 6/1 (4 places)

I gave up on Dandalla a couple of runs ago but am still glad to see it get its head back in front today.

Westover thrashed the Favourite but couldn't get to Zachariah, who popped up at 9/1.

Westover pulled very hard early and his head went up in the air but he came there with a chance and when I saw that King Of Conquest was cooked I was hopeful but Westover seemed to duck in behind the leader Zachariah before running on without threatening to get there. He's a big lad and clearly wants further but I would just question the fortitude today.

King Of Conquest was dismal at 5/4 and coming into this I felt only a few pounds covered their collective form today, so King Of Conquest was there more on stable and price tag today.

I thought Sweet Lady was worth a poke today. She started the season really well with a win and was then poorly ridden next time in a Guineas trial in France. 4th in the Guineas itself, she was only a short head and a head away from Mother Earth in 4th that day. Whilst only 8th in the French Oaks, she was only 2 and a half lengths behind the winner.

Dropped from Group 1 races to Group 3 today, it may be worth noting that the Graffard stable went through a really barren spell but are now back and firing at 7/15 and a 47% strike rate now. I think Sweet Lady is well overpriced on 8/1 and have had a go at those odds.

    3.58 Chantilly Sweet Lady 8/1

Sweet Lady was 2nd. Roger Varian's Waliyak rated 101 steals another French Group 3 for the UK.

The favourite from the Royer-Dupre yard was woeful. Going up in trip she was aggressively ridden and faded badly.

Surprised they went left-handed with her again today. I suspect that might be the last time.
