The one thing that does undo Nuno is that he reacts to adversity with the most cautious approach. Case in point when Dier limped off on Saturday, rather than bring on Rodon in a like-for-like swap and continue playing as we were set up, he brought on Rodon in a like-for-like swap but clearly had the team play with one foot on the brake

Obviously there were other outside influences pushing him in that direction, given we were lacking Son, Bergwijn and Lo Celso for that game so we were already down a bunch of players who could create space or play a ball through the lines so we already had one eye on trying to get what we could from the game to regroup afterwards once the lineup was announced, but that sort of approach isn't noted for winning matches

I am still thoroughly puzzled by our insistence to use 433 as the default formation when nothing good has come of it in 2 years.

I am also frustrated that we seem happy to risk so many senior players in this joke of a tournament. Two more injuries tonight for our trouble.

But i remain calm. Thanks to our dithering for 5 weeks of the summer (plus the month or so when the season was still ongoing) in signing Nuno and the sheer number of players at the Euros and Copa, he has had very little time to work with this group.

I'm pleased he gave Tanguy minutes today. Totally lacking match fitness and totally unsuited to the stupid formation we seem obsessed with, he remains the most likely player to provide us with creativity. Given the injuries to Stevie and Lucas, I'd like to see us go 4231 against the Chavs with Skipp and Hojbjerg at the base with Gil and Son (hopefully) either side of Tanguy in a #10 role with Kane up top.

Cue my faux surprise when we line up against Chelsea with Dele and Winks either side of Kane, and a trio of Hojbjerg, Skipp and John behind them <laugh>

Nuno was a desperate appointment because the process of hiring a new manager was a farce.

He’s an average manager and always will be, so we can’t be surprised when his team plays average football and gets average results.

Him getting the Spurs job was akin to one of us winning the lottery.

It's got to the stage where I am seriously missing Kyle Naughton.

Yeah Dele's 100% starting on Sunday, he's wormed his way back in to being golden boy again - except this time he's far from golden. The Spurs social media is back to sickly 'over posting' him too as if he's been having seasons like Kane and Son.

The fact Winks never got on at all today makes it likely he starts too I'd imagine...

    Ohhh the joys.

What data have you used to determine this?
On the same data how would Pochettino have rated prior to appointment? How about Nicholson or Burkinshaw or Rowe?
Or Wenger or Ferguson or Clough or Shankly?

And yet the worst managers we've had in recent history, by a distance, have been the 3 whose CV's were 'too big' for the likes of Spurs.

If Nuno getting the job was like one of us winning the lottery, what does that make BMJ's appointment after leading RKC Waalwijk to a bunch of mid-table finishes in the Dutch league while playing in a 7000 seater stadium?

Average managers don't get a club promoted and then into Europe within 2 seasons in my opinion.
Ain't saying he is a top manager or what we needed but he is better than average imho.

Was one of the reasons I thought we should have sacked JM in February and got a manager in then. This situation was so predictable and so easy to avoid.
It's another in the long list of stupid and avoidable bad decisions that Levy and the club have made since November 2019.

The issue with attempting 433 is that, on the face of it, we appear to be trying to copy Liverpool's approach of having a solid midfield that can perform a mid block in their sleep while attacking down both flanks with pace from the FBs while the wingers cut in, and this approach currently has two problems

i.) While we have the wide attackers to do this, especially Son, our FBs aren't reliable enough to commit to that system yet as Reguilon often gets funneled down cul-de-sacs, Doherty has been a real disappointment, Emerson hasn't bedded in yet and neither has Sessegnon in spite being with us for two years, while Tanganga & Davies aren't that type of FB
ii.) Our midfield has been stuck in a transitional phase for two years so we have players who are best deployed in a high press (Lo Celso, Dele, Ndombele, Winks), players who are best deployed in a mid block (Hojbjerg, Skipp, Sarr*), and players who wonder what sort of moron would have them playing in a low block for eighteen months (all of the above), and what Nuno needs is to find the players that can play in a midfield three going forward (which, in my opinion, would be Hojbjerg, Skipp, Lo Celso, and Sarr), those who can do a job until the end of the season before being replaced by somebody more suited and/or an upgrade, and those are effectively walking transfer funds because they won't fit into the system but we need to raise their value

He had some strong financial backing there though plus the addition of Mendes helping with deals. Ruben Neves for instance had been chased by some of Europe's top clubs then ends up signing for Wolves in the Championship for £20m. Then he signed half the Portugal national team upon promotion. I can't remember exactly so don't quote me word for word here, but in the first three years of them being back in the Prem I think they had around the 5th highest spend, so realistically it's not overly surprising they got into Europe so quickly after being promoted.

I'd say average/ decent is about right when describing him to be honest.

It's why I think he'll do around par for the course here in terms of results, he won't excel but I don't think he'll completely flop either, though it just won't be very enjoyable as we're currently seeing.

Nuno was an appointment without any ambition. He won't lead us where Poch did or Potter could.

He's a stop-gap appointment, nothing more. Potter would have required Brighton being paid compensation, so that wasn't to Levy's taste...but he could have taken on the Poch mantle

In less than 2 years (I reckon before Christmas 2022), it'll be time to replace Nuno. One can only hope that a different chairman gets to pick his replacement and they choose someone who can actually develop us as a football team. Currently, our lack of ambition is a ****ing joke

Not that I want to overly defend him but in Levy’s defence this appointment was on Paratici. Nuno wasn’t on our shortlist prior to Paratici’s involvement and reports even said that Levy needed persuading to hire him as he had concerns about Nuno’s style and to be fair, he was right on that.

The club then made the statement about getting our identity back… Well… so far, that doesn’t look like it’ll be happening any time soon.

He's not a stop gap mate, he is the only one that would take on the challenge given the squad and the payment.
He has moved up a rung and can't really fail career wise because nobody outside Spurs will have too high an expectation of him, all he has to do is improve on last season.

He's a stop-gap. He was cheap to hire and will be cheap to fire. That's it. Neither Paratici, nor Levy actually wanted him. There was some Portuguese bloke that I'd never heard of, who was ahead of him.

I don't know of anyone who really believes that he will turn is into a winning team. He is a Covid Temp.

Levy's got no idea of how to run the club now. Our managerial search was ****ing nuts. One minute we wanted Conte...then Gattusso....then Nuno.

There's nothing that those managers have in common. It's just a random selection of unemployed football managers...then we end up with.... surprise, surprise.... another unemployed manager.

It's an object lesson in being cheap and will result in more failure.

I know this is slightly away from this topic, but I still remember how proud and full of optimism you were after the end of the 2016/17 season. You were saying how Spurs were going from strength to strength and that the club hadn't been in such a great position for decades. I still recall how full of hope you were for the future.

Crazy how those sentiments are contrasted to the sheer cynicism you feel right now. Not that it isn't justified, by the way, but it's nuts how much the mood has shifted from 4 years ago.

    Football, ey?

He won’t improve on last season. The squad is weaker for several reasons and I’d be amazed if Spurs finish 7th or higher.
