Yeah, but in fairness, we looked at them buying Townsend and Gray, and I don’t think anyone for a moment thought ‘great signings’.Turns out Rafa knows a bit more than us.
It's also very early days, I wouldn't be jumping on those as great signings yet. Townsend has the occasional good game and 'wordlie' goal in him. But he is a one trick pony, and that trick comes off about 3 times a season. Gray could start delivering on his potential, or he might not. Too early to say really although obviously he has hit the ground running. Walcott rightly or wrongly was brought in as much for his experience as his quality. His temperament, professionalism and love for the club were probably big factors along with the lack of fee. Realistically we need an overhall of our wingers as we have a lot of depth and very little quality. I'd probably put that area of our squad as high of a priority as sorting out our GKs and getting in another CDM next summer. See how this season goes but I really wouldn't mind shifting most of them out and bringing several new attacking players in next summer.
Dunno, I've wanted us to sign Gray for year, since before he went to Leicester. Still don't rate Townsend though. He'll live off that goal til January.
I agree about that part of the pitch being a huge priority, Stu is streets ahead of any of the others who play there. It's why I was so disappointed to blow such a huge chunk of wages on yet another average option.
Gray I thought was good business. He is a bit Redmond like in that he plays well once every so often, but on his day he is better than Redmond. Interesting to see if he keeps it up Townsend is ****
Gray for £1.5m is deal of the century, for sure. Thing is, if he was offered us and Everton, he wouldn't have chosen us.
So many people refuse to understand this point We have never really been a draw apart from a small period under poch and the time under koeman (relative to other times at least). And even then we weren’t a stellar draw and we don’t have a pet agent like wolves who gets his players to go there on lower wages to be in the shop window and of course we don’t have the resources of budget to blow similar clubs out of the water and it isn’t a particularly happening city either. It is a nice part of the world to live - but not necessarily for a young footballer who wants to enjoy their money from time to time Our selling point has to be that young players can play and earn a move to a bigger club and we will actually sell them. We won’t dig our claws in like palace with Zaha and other cases. The latter example is why it surprises me that they have managed to sign some very good young players. But perhaps he is different as he came from them in the first place. And equally I think we will see a lot of players think very carefully about signing massive 5-6 year contracts as mid sized / smaller clubs
Yeah we are really missing Stu at the moment and it's just a toss up for who starts on the wing as none of them are producing enough to be a consistent starter. I would have been happy if we didn't sign Walcott, and sold Redmond and Ely. It may have been slightly harsh but I wouldn't have been upset had we moved Djenepo on too and then brought in a couple of new options but maybe that will come next summer now. Personally I'd like to see Tella given more of a run in the team because he's not had as many chances as the rest of them. Ralph doesn't seem to be much of a fan though as he has had really limited chances despite a lack of good options ahead of him.
Yeah most probably. They didn't sign him early though iirc? Dont think Rafa was announced til late June. We knew Leicester wanted Vesty and should have taken advantage early doors imo.
What is your opinion on Stuijks tackle Tom ? Was driving down M1 at the time and listening to it on car radio so havnt actually seen it, although it resulted in a bad injury for the young lad most seemed to be saying that the tackle wasnt a red card offence.
Based on the grounds of the player breaking his leg? As awful as that was.. No way was it a red card offense, Just hugely unlucky with the follow through.
