Strange that our home form is so bad. Second manager since LJ and we still struggle at home. is it the architecture? Atmosphere? Layout? Size of the pitch? Very strange.
maybe the style of play …. NP certainly "chucked them on at the end v PNE … … when you look at the starting line up Saturday it is difficult to improve on it? except change may be 2 or 3 [ same quality for quality, Squad looks well balanced mid field defence ] but change for "different attack / defence scenario ] Baker / DaSilva for instance. …………. 4 - 3 - 1 - 2 Vyner Kalas Atkinson DaSilva Massengo James King ?????? <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< who though? Palmer / Scott / Semenyo /??? Weimann Martin we are now flush with a squad that is top drawer 35% and 50% in the mix 15% gaining experience …. as a layman … I would find it difficult to play one above the other [ 4 players ] in any certainty... [ 6 go on sheet each game ]
Our home form and win ration has generally been pretty poor ever since we got out of League 1 to be honest, and we've tended to do better away from home in most seasons. But we're not alone, and it seems to be a peculiarity of the Championship specifically. We really need to be beating the likes of Preston before we play teams like WBA and co and to also break this horrible and unwanted record, that gets worse by the week. But first we need to create chances for the strikers, and from what I've seen and heard we're not doing that nearly enough.
It’s psychological IMO. It doesn’t help we’ve recently been a counter attacking team which is more difficult at home as the fans get restless. NP seems to want to play more on the front foot so hopefully that should help.
Our home record has always been iffy and is one of the main reasons we fall by the wayside so often. Isn't there a saying that you need to get 70% of your season's points at home to succeed and if that is anywhere close to the truth then there you are looking at our usual demise. Ashton Gate need to be a fortress where others fear to tread but sadly nothing could be further from the truth. Perhaps we have a stats man who could prove our downfall in the comfort of our home stadium.
With 23 home games and arbitorially [ 12, .. 50% ] need to be won, more than half the remainder drawn 6 and that leaves 5 losses = 42 points .. away turn that around and lose less than half =11 draw half of remainder = 6 and win 6 == 66pts that is usually top 8 -10 teams ! TOP 6 target has to be 70 - 72 points [ ave lowest pts ] THATS 4 - 6 pts .. so lose 2 less …! ? currently [ low number games 6 ] home form is 2 from 9 away is 6 from 9, however Blackpool was injury time robber .. Swansea lucky goal … so lets not despair yet
No despair here realred but we need to up our game and become more clinical. We truly need the 3 points up for grabs against Luton if only to show that we can win at home.
A big part the problem early on was we were a counter attacking team, so it suited us when playing away where the home team were more inclined to attack. However at home we struggled to command any game, were too slow to build any attacking threat and when we did commit we’d get punished. At least this season we’re playing well, the wins will come. Whereas whenever we got a win at home before it was usually very undeserved.
well they are W L W L D D ...…. WE ARE …. D L W L W D … they snatched a point in 90 +8 mins ! Of course Morrell has moved on to Pompey . wonder how much we get in sell on fee?
I tend to agree on the psychology bit, but there were no fans actually in the stadium last season and our home form was still poor - its been the same for a while now, under LJ, DH and now NP.
We struggle to break teams down if they sit in, when we play away teams are more likely to feel they have to come at us which gives us the space we need. We have to find a way to break teams down. There is also now the added pressure that if we are winning towards the end of home games to see the game out because it’s been so long since we’ve won.
That puzzled me a bit too, I thought we’d do better at home during lockdown with no fans in the ground.
Me too - and also I thought the change of manager would help. Lee Johnson seemed to set us up at home to play like an away side (ie just NOT to lose). When LJ left I thought a change of tactic would bring some results - after all, playing at home is assumed to be an advantage, right? However, apart from the 'purple patch' we enjoyed for a short period under DH (which probably had more to do with sheer luck than management 'wizardry'), we have never been able to make the 'home advantage' work for us. Even now under NP we can't do it. Hopefully when the win comes it will be the start of a huge winning streak
It’s so entrenched now it’s difficult to end, it’s a mind thing now I think. We certainly need to be more attack minded and not so cautious, which is difficult with such a bad record. I’m sure it will come soon
We need to learn how to take control of games, We are able when playing away using the counterattack setup.. playing at home is a different control that has not been implemented that we are comfortable with for some reason.. I still think we have players with the skill and flair factor, able to press higher and keep the opposition on the back foot.. not allowing teams to settle, which normally is our undoing.. maybe it’s why NP is looking to fitness as part of our structure.. it’s when we play best IMO..
names on the team sheet BENTLEY MARTIN WEIMANN KALAS ATKINSON JAMES MASSENGO …………… UUUUUUM ? need 4 more to start …. from a choice of probably 7 or 8
