It has been a pretty good St Leger Festival so far for favourite backers and hopefully the Dettori/Gosden bandwagon will keep rolling today with Dettori getting a tune out of old boy Stradivarius in the Doncaster Cup. It is difficult to see why Hoo Ya Mal is such a short priced favourite for the Flying Scotsman (1:40) on the back of winning a maiden race in a good time. Ribhi won his only start over six and could be anything, whilst Richard Hannon’s Razzle Dazzle won over this trip last time. Coventry Stakes runner up Eldrickjones is arguably the form pick but is still a maiden. I expect the pace to come from Find unless Buick decides to make more use of Noble Truth than he did at York. Nothing appeals at the prices. In the Flying Childers (2:10), Armor needs to return to the form of his Molecomb win after his poor effort over six in the Prix Morny. He gets in here without a penalty but I think he has most to fear from two of the fillies. Attagirl won a Listed race (beating Caturra, Thunder Love fifth) on Ebor day and is going the right direction but George Boughey’s CORAZON won a Group 3 at Longchamp (Papa Don’t Preach fifth) last time and may take advantage if the Hannon-trained favourite wants easier ground than Town Moor today. Having looked at the Mallard handicap last night, I now find my selection to be a non-runner and I am not switching to Rhythmic Intent because it needs too many things to go in its favour and has only won on easier ground. The 3:45 features a couple of horses that do not seem to win very often but have dropped to winning marks – Chairmanoftheboard and Kimifive – but I cannot be having either of them simply because of their handicapping. Mitrosonfire won the grey horse handicap last month and was a good second last time at Haydock so cannot be discounted. ASJAD failed to catch Desert Doctor in a three runner race at FFos Las but with so few miles on the clock he can improve and beat the consistent Able Kane.
Win lucky 15/Acca: 2:20 Chester - Way To Win 7/2 3:15 Donny - Sevenna Star 4/1 4:20 Donny - Viola 11/2 5:45 Salisbury - Bungledupinblue 11/2 I do also like Attagirl in the 2:10 at Donny. Won for me last time despite the hinderance of todays jockey. However many more bad runs than good for me from Mr Tudhope means he's now made it onto my jockeys not to back list and therefore i'm reluctantly leaving Attagirl unbacked today.
Morning All 2.10 Doncaster-Papa Don't Preach Each Way @ 20-1 [Bet 365] 6 places Think this French horse will not be disgraced
Ok, here we go again with my Donny picks... 1:10 - Tack, 9/1 1:40 - Find, 7/1 2:10 - Attagirl, 8/1 2:40 - Strad, 8/15 3:15 - Speedo Boy, 11/1 3:45 - Gale Force Maya, 7/1 4:20 - Thousand Oaks, 9/4 Good luck if your playing today, another watching brief for me...
I thought Ribhi made an excellent debut and made a vow to follow him next time. The Dark Angel colt looked as if he would be suited by stepping up a furlong and he gets that today. I felt he made an above average start and that he could progress to better class. I have backed him at 4/1, in the belief that Hoo Ya Mal is too short. The Balding horse has had two runs but to my eye his form is only similar to Ribhi and the Tregoning colt has the chance to step forward from his one start. 1.40 Doncaster Ribhi 4/1
A bit disappointed with Ribhi today. He just never picked up and he has probably failed to build upon his debut race at all today. A 94 rated horse won and 40/1 shot rated 91 was 3rd, so that looks pretty mediocre for a Listed contest. Eldrickjones came in rated 102 but has run miles below that figure today.
Mitrosonfire has had a good season and ran well enough last time. He doesn't have as sexy a profile as some in today's field but he's a prolific winner and 7/1 seemed a reasonable price to me. Able Kane and Asjad were others with appeal for permed tricasts. 3.45 Doncaster Mitrosonfire 7/1 Mitrosonfire/Able Kane/Asjad (6x Tricasts)
Mitrosonfire seemed to weaken quite markedly in the final furlong today and it looked like six and a half furlongs was a bit too far for him. Able Kane held up his end in winning but favourite Asjad weakened even more markedly than Mitrosonfire. I thought 3/1 for Asjad was awfully short today but he was the one with the sexy profile and punters often gravitate towards that. Well done Able Kane backers, he was my second choice for the race but I just felt Mitrosonfire held a similar chance at bigger odds.
What a difference some rain makes... I was at Doncaster to see Stradivarius and he did not disappoint. He travelled very easily throughout the race and at the top of the straight, Dettori was looking behind him to see if the pair following him were travelling. Once he had picked up the leaders he spent most of the last furlong looking over each shoulder for non existent challengers. After he had been led in on the winner and done a flying dismount, it started to rain. The rain was too late for Trueshan, who had been withdrawn much earlier because of unsuitable fast ground. A good effort by the Prescott three year old filly Alerta Roja finishing second – could be another money spinner for Kirsten Rausing. By the time the rain eased just before the running of the Mallard handicap the going had altered to good, good to soft in places. With my original selection a non runner, I could have switched to Rhythmic Intent but I did not. To win races it needs so many things to go right for it and easier ground – so it had got easier ground, at literally the eleventh hour, the race was run to suit it and it won. With fifty yards to go in the Flying Childers, it looked like Corazon was going to win but then she got run out of it by two runners on the stands rail. At least that was better than Asjad, who was heavily backed, travelled for half the race and then found nothing when asked. Well done to those that had the consistent Able Kane as he led all the way.
