I nearly got my head kicked in later that day in Manhattan when I said to a group of New Yorkers that this was a thing waiting to happen, as there was no security getting on planes to fly domestically. I said it because of what we’d gone through in this country with the IRA, Palestinian terrorists, etc and that we were so much more security conscious, but the Americans were all “it couldn’t happen here” Admittedly, emotions were running high (I think we’d just seen the towers collapsing) and, luckily, someone stepped in and stopped it, but they really couldn’t believe it or get it. I still think of that long long day …..
not sure where to post this . Mods feel free to move as you see fit . https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-us-canada-58463014
Yes - the ferries were overwhelmed and could only go from Midtown, so the marines stepped in and did an amazing job. Thanks for posting this, Jasper. Unsung heroes, like the air traffic controllers who got all the planes down in and just outside the USA.
I was due to fly to Florida on 9/13 (keeping it Americanised) but knew it would be unlikely to happen, so I visited the travel agents in Above Bar (Lunn Poly iirc) and switched my holiday to a two week all inclusive in Jamaica, Montego Bay. The resort we stayed in was very quiet and short of American holiday makers, when they grounded/reduced flights for a while.
Even as a child back then, I can remember how lax security was (compared to now anyway). I remember when I was 7 or 8 when flying to Turkey (this was in the late 90's) my sister and I were allowed in the cockpit during the flight! It must have been far too easy for those scumbags to hijack the planes.
And then you get nutters like the selfish bastard in the German wings cockpit who deliberately crashed into the side of a mountain . Poor pilot and cabin crew couldn’t get back in ! He must have had issues , but to take the others with him makes my blood run cold .
People with mental health issues see these other examples of harmful suicide events and subconsciously or consciously makes them more likely to imitate so we should the resist the attacks of being woke or political correctness when it is suggested that mental health should be taken more seriously in the work place, or community. Remember we put our lives and family lives in other people's hands all the time, the nurse, the bus driver, other commuters etc. It is in our interest that we help these ill people as much as possible.
I am not having a pop at him for his mental health issues , apologies if you took it that way . Someone VERY close to me suffers with depression . Just wish if he HAD to do it , he did it on his own .
I was in New York in January 2001 and went up to the 110th floor of one of the towers (Wasn't allowed on the roof due to snow). It was something I am glad to be able to have experienced and never imagining that in 9 months they would no longer be standing. On the 110th floor I believe it was was a wooden model of the New York skyline and a restaurant /cafe. When the attacks happened 9 months later It did not seem real. I remember my thoughts being about people who were working in there I may have met on my visit who had lost their lives that day along with the emergency services and all the innocent victims that also lost their lives that day. Most of the focus was on New York but let's not forget the other places that innocent people caught up in the attacks that lost their lives that day.
I have family that live in New York (on Long Island) and my cousin on September 11th had a 10:30am meeting on the 44th floor with his accountant. Luckily he didn't get there in time. I was also in New York on September 11th 2000. I went up the WTC on the 12th I believe at around 10am. Spooky and scary.
I also put on here after watching The Chase there was a question about the actor Steve Buscemi. The Chaser mentioned that Steve used to be a fireman at 55 Engine House Little Italy in New York between 1980 and 1984.The day after the attacks Steve returned to his old fire house and volunteered to look for lost firemen spending a week working 12 hour shifts
I had an Irish guy knock on my door offering to do some block paving. I thought I'd check out his previous work first
