Standing behind the front of the Shelf was my first parking space. Wonderful view! Later behind the goal at the North End with my mates! (I can still see Bobby Smith bending the goalies middle finger backwards trying to stop Bobby's header. Goalie Plu of Sheff Wednesday!............among many memories......)
First spot (69-73) was above the tunnel, but - but it will come as little surprise that for the next 10 years my spot was on the Shelf. Great atmosphere and feckin' brilliant view
My Dad used to talk about this stand being built (early '30s?) and to the day he died he called it the New Stand!
Same as me I used to stand on a fold out box that my dad made and look through the hoop railings down the front to the left of the tunnel, later in with the Herbert's in the Park Lane and at the end in the Shelf where I felt I had found my home , great view brilliant atmosphere and our group had nicknames for those around us , we had " Man on, Pass FFS , Oh Ref was you born a c**t and my favourite was " known as Snipers Dream " cos he had a massive head and was a chain smoker
The best place to watch football in the world, bar none. Okay the stations were a problem on occasion but nothing comes close to standing on The Shelf. I'd give a great deal to do it one more time.
My worst memory was standing towards the rear of the shelf in 1971 .Taken over,it seemed ,by Arsenal trash. ...while we let them score the goal. The goal that ruined football!
Smithy, I was dead in line on the shelf with the goal that they scored in , the silence around me was something I will never forget , I usually stood on the shelf halfway between the penalty box and centre spot but that night that was as far into the ground as we could get despite arriving at 4 o'clock
Something every Spurs supporter had to do at least once. As a teen I once watched some of an evening game in the Shelf sitting on a barrier leaning against the upright (I couldn't see otherwise) . Got away with it as it was a dirge of a game (think it was the Poool) otherwise I would have been projected onto the pitch if Spurs had scored while I was thus seated..
I can see all those kids passed from man to man over their heads to the front.............it would be headlines today..."Cruelty to children!"
This rant was inspired by our Palace disaster, but I didn't add it to the match thread as it applies to all other matches. So the analysis of the Davies handball is based on whether the arms are in an "unnatural position". NO! NO! NO! Yes, I am shouting now. Running around using your arms IS completely natural. Bouncing around in the box holding your hands behind you like a demented gimp IS NOT natural. So I can't claim it wasn't a pen, because under the current rules it is, and I would expect the same should the situation be reversed, I still have sympathy for Davies. Because if you suddenly glue your arms to your side or hold hands behind your back the instant you run into the box it's not going to always work. Chances are Davies was getting back and about to turn toward the threat and put his arms behind him, but the ball caught him at the wrong time. There is no chance you can run back quickly without using your arms! Remains to be seen if the rule is applied consistently though (cough cough). Anyway, point is the terminology really really winds me up. There is nothing unnatural about not having your arms by your side. It is actually completely the opposite.
