I am sorting through my wife’s things in our place in Spain and stumbled across a scrapbook she kept from when we first started going out together (30/06/73 according to her record).
In the book was this ticket, which has quite a (I think) funny story.
For the 3 months leading up to this night out, my Mrs to be hadn’t told me that her parents had given her a time to be in by (most of my generation will get this), and as a result she had been going home late and getting into bother.
Eventually they gave her an ultimatum which was to be home by a stupidly early time or they would stop her from seeing me.
This was back in the day before I drove, so getting her home involved walking from the Top Rank, back into the town centre then getting her on the bus.
True to form, the ultimatum was delivered on the day Wizzard were at the Top Rank and we had to leave before they came on stage.
I always reminded her of this when she reminded of the time she gave me a fiver to buy the drinks and I pocketed the change. I still don’t remember doing that, but she got more than her money back over the next 48 years.

Look at the ticket price - £1 to see a top band of the time.

Once the idea was put in my head, I could see nothing else. Took a minute for me to see -4 deg.

Must confess that I haven’t been into Southampton for quite a while, but I had to go in this morning as my local Boots has stopped doing optician appointments (seems they’re being franchised out …. :emoticon-0104-surpr)
Of course I didn’t realise half the city was closed today due to a bike thing, but that was fine (in the end(
What I didn’t know is that the Avenue has now been suwngraded speed wise to 30mph. And all I could see they’ve done is blank out the signs saying 40 :emoticon-0101-sadsm
I (and judging by many cars behind me) didn’t know and there were a few trying to get past the guy in front of me who (thankfully) kept to 30 all the way up. I don’t have an issue with the speed limit (though I can think of loads of other roads which could do with a reduction in the speed limit!) but I DO think there should be more signage! I feel it’s only a matter of time before they realise they’re on to a money spinner and stick a camera there! :emoticon-0104-surpr

Believe it or not, it’s actually against the law to put 30mph signs up within an existing 30mph limit if there are street lights present. Only variations on the 30mph (20, 40, etc.) are allowed. You have to get a Traffic Order through Parliament in order to get an local exception to the law.

    Yeah, I know. Bonkers.

Reminds me of the time they changed speed limits on the Millbrook Rd W back in the early 80s. The big change was on the slip roads which switched from 50 to 30. Quite sensible, but the first inkling you got was the 30 sign hidden from view until you swept past it.

The police just parked at the top of the slip road picking random motorists out (all were speeding) to book them. I was caught bang to rights of course, though the police officer was complimentary about me only doing 38mph.

Wow! Thanks! I didn’t know that. But there isn’t even a 30 sign when you join the Avenue (as I did) at Stag Gates. Presumably, the limit starts further down and there’s no more signage. A disgrace ….

They are using mobile cameras, as my son found out to his cost.
He got a fine and a day of online tuition regarding speed awareness, the latter in lieu of points on his licence.

Am off to Norn Iron next week for a bit of a break, any must see places I should fit in? Am only there for 3 nights, have got a rental car and am based in Belfast and will already be heading for the North Coast, Giants Causeway etc but was wondering if there's anything that Google won't immediately throw up in the "things to do" searches.
First break since 2019 so am looking forward to it hugely.
    Thanks in advance.

I was in ASDA this morning and I bought the Mrs a small sphere of Cadburys chocolate with hazelnut and a rice crisp plus a chocolate truffle inside for 47p. Guess what it is called? That's right you've guessed it Cadburys Christmas Puds

Better get my tree from the loft if it's that time again. Do you think the govt are bringing xmas forward so that we can all have a blow out before the shops are completely empty? :emoticon-0102-bigsm
