Taylor Moore Hearts interview: The €10m Lyon bid and why he couldn't say no to Jambos
Articulate and confident, Taylor Moore exudes all the attributes of a footballer raised in France. His story is a fascinating one.

Taylor Moore made his Hearts debut at Tannadice on Saturday.

His Hearts debut came last Saturday, a substitute for the final eight minutes of the 2-0 win against Dundee United at Tannadice. The question of how he wound up in Edinburgh on loan from Bristol City provokes a lengthy answer. It is delivered in a polite, perhaps even slightly posh, English accent.

When a reputable European club like Lyon offer €10million for you at the age of 18, it can be overwhelming. Moore enjoyed the experience as a burgeoning centre-back at Lens watched by scouts from across the Continent.

He chose to stay there having come through the youth academy but then fell out of the team at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis. Eventually he was sold to Bristol City in a £1.5m move before subsequent loans to Bury, Cheltenham Town, Southend United and Blackpool. Hearts is the latest on the list.

Now 24, Moore intends this one to be different and felt overwhelmed seeing more than 2,200 travelling fans at Tannadice. He eventually climbed off the bench himself after telling Armand Gnanduillet that the striker would come on to score. Eloquent and a prophet, it seems.

He couldn’t have predicted his own career path after moving to France aged seven and attracting some of Europe’s biggest names as a teenager. That high-calibre interest hints at a defender still carrying plenty potential.

“I was a young English boy playing well abroad. I was 18, absolutely fearless and loved playing for Lens. It attracted a lot of interest from big clubs. We debated what to do then decided to stay at Lens to develop for one more year,” he explained in an exclusive Evening News interview.

“Ultimately, it didn’t work out how we wanted. Looking back on it, there probably isn’t much I would change because there are ups and downs in football and I’ve enjoyed it so far.

“It was amazing. I was at my boyhood club in France, I’d come through the academy there and has support from the fans. When things start going wrong, as a young boy you are one of the first ones pulled out of the team.

    Mental strength and resilience
“At the time, I probably wasn’t ready for that. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I probably didn’t have the mental strength and resilience that I do now. It was frustrating turning down a big move then not playing the season after. It did eat away at me but there’s not much I can do about that now.

“I’ve had a handful of loans at Bristol City and that’s how the cookie crumbles. You are still considered a young centre-back at 24. I’ve taken what I could from every loan spell but this one for me is special.

“I've been and done League One in England and I wanted a new challenge. Edinburgh is an amazing city. Ultimately, knowing that fanbase is there every week makes a hell of a difference, especially after Covid and empty stadiums.

“I have two years left on my contract at Bristol City and, at 24, I couldn’t afford to sit around and not play. I appreciate the manager’s honesty letting me come up here to play for this big club. Something as exciting as Hearts in a lovely city was too attractive to turn down.”

An Instagram post by the aforementioned Gnanduillet let the cat out of the bag regarding Moore’s latest loan deal. The two played together at Blackpool. “You know what Armand’s like, he’s a bit careless,” laughed Moore.

“I had long chats with him and he said Hearts had a good enough team to push for something this year. He said to get myself up because we needed someone in this position. I did my homework and here I am.

    Brilliant few minutes
“I was sat on the bench on Saturday and I said to him: ‘You’re going to come on and score.’ I told him he would change the game for us. My instructions were to secure it at the back, help Alex [Cochrane] on the left side. Then pretty soon after that we scored so it finished the game off nicely.

“I loved it. I didn’t play from the start but that was the plan with the gaffer all along, just to bed me in a little bit. He needs to stick by boys who have done so well at the start of the season. We had that conversation and it was fine by me. It was brilliant just to get on the pitch for those few minutes.”

Moore isn’t short on atmospheric experiences from playing in France and the English Championship. “Saturday tops it,” he insisted. “I was so impressed with the fans all week when there was talk of me signing. The support I got on social media was brilliant.

“To actually see it first hand with over 2,000 fans, that’s an incredible away support. The noise they made as well. They outsang all the Dundee United fans. I was taken aback by it all.”

Once bedded in, Hearts will have themselves a versatile central defender eager to progress his own game and challenge for success within their team.

“I’m definitely an organiser,” said Moore. “At centre-back you can see the whole pitch so I can organise the whole team. I will give 110 per cent every game. I will try to get on the ball and take risks in the right areas.

“If I can bring that bit of quality I will, but above all I’m here to defend and keep that ball out of the net. I want as many clean sheets as possible to keep us high up the league.”

He had/has a lot of potential, and was an England U20 international, so £1.5m is not a lot. You need to move on from the 70's and 80's transfer values mate. That was the going rate at the time, and probably will be again soon. We just paid £1.6m for a defender from the 3rd division with no appearances at any level for England, so is that bad business as well, are you sweating about that...?

I've moved on mate, the reason it makes me sweat is that during this transfer window we have lost so much value on numerous players that cost a bomb, never made it and had to be moved on, we have given away millions just to survive, we could not even raise any funds to sign up a quality front man, that's life, it makes you sweat.

In thr summer 2019 Bristol City spent £29.6m as the division's third-biggest spenders."Now? we spent.£1.9m, it not a fault, just a fact of life, a sign of the times, that's what makes me sweat.

I love the fact that everyone is now quoting in 2019 BCFC spent £29.66M (I take is they mean 2019/20) and in todays market we overpaid

No one says in the same period we sold £43.86M

    Webster £20.00M
    Kelly £13.32M
    Brownhill £08.00M
    Eisa £00.81M
    Pack £00.73M

Lets all be honest in todays market how much would we have received for these players, with the experience they had at the time. So did we over pay for Nagy, Taylor-Moore etc. or was that the market at the time?

(My source for fees is Transfermarkt.co.uk - source used by most reputable people)

I posted a while back (when LJ was sacked) the factual figures from Transfermarkt showing that we made a PROFIT on transfers overall during LJs reign, but it didn’t count apparently because some of the players were acquired before LJs arrival.

I made a deliberate comparison on the spend of 2019 and 2021, the freedom of choice then and the restrictions being applied and suffered now, how as a club we've had to react to market conditions, make a drastic reduction in costs, wages and activities, caused by the pandemic, stadium closures and cessation of operations.

I even stated it was a fact of life, sign of the times and it was not a fault, we did make a profit on transactions and spent a bucketful replacing the class acts, money was made and lost by various actions at that time, this is the here and now, then we had the finance, now we suffer the losses

We have had to act to cut costs, players refused to sign contracts because of excessive wage demands were moved on, poor performing playing, medical, coaching staff and internal management had to be moved on, Steve Lansdown has written off £14million of club debt by converting it into shares, budgets obviously for player replacement greatly reduced.( https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/bristol-city-steve-lansdown-debt-5483153)

There is no argument to fit, these actions have taken place and are continuing, the club has to operate and recover ,Lansdown and Pearson have stated 3 years, the process has started and it's a long way back.

I think some folk find it convenient to forget that Kelly, Reid and Bryan came through our Academy.
Fairness should check out what 'he' signed, with what 'he' sold.
Again tbf check the cost of the 11 players Pearson ditched.
And then those of 'his' signings who have longer contracts that can't get a game now.

Good point RP, but he did aid in the development of those 3, Reid and Kelly in particular, and turned them into highly valued assets. Also, to compare spend in 2019 vs 2021 (I know this was your alter ego, not you this time) given the 18 months the whole global economy has had is laughable, and again, only used to beat a certain person with. It's like saying the crowds were down 100% for a year and a half after LJ left, so that was the new manager(s) fault....:headbang::headbang:

Crap, I'm demonstrating the opposite, that in extreme and very extenuating circumstances what a very confident and sound job Nige and the club are doing, especially with all of the internal problems that was inherited and enforced reduced economic activities that have been issued.

To be honest global economic conditions and the pandemic has had a serious effect on all of life and caused difficuties but serious issues have been inherited at Bristol City and they were not all the fault of a sick bat in a Chinese province.

I really liked Taylor Moore, thought he was a composed player who could have gone on to the same heights as Webster. Unfortunately Ashton's scatter-gun approach probably meant he didn't get the focus or development that he should have had. Another wasted City talent...

Good move for him, should be one of the best defenders up there and he gets to live in Edinburgh too. Not too bad.

We have spent more than 1.6m this window? with fee's etc [ agents ] likely > £5m …………….. after a 18 month covid disaster that's being prudent! will recoup a bit on Nagy [ £2m ] other oddments maybe and have saved over 500,00k on the wage bill!
I think we are in a happy place, have a good base and can improve ….. Taylor Moore was played by NP ………... BUT WAS TO GUNG HO!! got dropped, maybe this loan is build him up … calm him down and …………
