Hopefully these young professionals mature into excellent Premiership players with NE.

It is 17.25 and only rumours to excite the supporters. It is a bit farcical but that is because of the way it is practiced. There is all this clamour for a striker, but NE have a good partnership in Riis and Maguire with the experienced Sinclair and Barkhuisen to freshen things up. There is also the young lad who is supposed to be hot stuff. And lying injured at the moment is Jed Evans. I would pursue with Riis and Maguire as first pick. Their current show of confidence may spur Sinclair and Barkhuisen on. So, if NE don't land another striker, there is plenty of talent in the squad. The first 3 losses were down to team selection.

Two good signings at the last minute, particularly the Ali McCann deal. For £1million? 21 year old NI International. That is a bargain. St. Johnston must be desperate for cash.

    Also sold someone to Wigan

Preston North End are pleased to confirm Ali McCann has joined the club from St Johnstone for an undisclosed fee.

The central midfielder has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Lilywhites, making the move from Callum Davidson’s Scottish Premiership side.

McCann, 21 years old, is currently away on international duty with Northern Ireland, who he has earned six caps for, and he will join up with his new PNE team-mates next week.

Speaking after signing for the club, Ali said: “It’s brilliant, it’s been such a long day today. I’m just so buzzing to get it all sorted and get it over the line and I just can't wait to get back and get in with the lads next week.

"St Johnstone are a great club. I’ve been there since I was young so it was difficult leaving because they’ve done so much for me when I’ve been growing up, but an opportunity to move down to a club like this is just too much to pass up and I just can’t wait to get started.

"I try and do every part of the game. I try and put myself around, getting forward, getting back, getting involved. I put myself into tackles, pressing high, I also try and chip in with goals at the other end so hopefully I can do that and the fans will take to me which is what I’ll try and do."

The Edinburgh-born man has been at St Johnstone since 2012 and was part of their side which made history last season by winning the domestic cup double.

Since making his debut for the Saints in 2018, McCann has made almost 100 appearances in Scottish football, 43 of them coming in a famous campaign last term.

Head coach Frankie McAvoy told PNE.Com: “It's magnificent, it’s a brilliant signing for Preston North End. He’s one of the best young players in Scotland.

"He’s done remarkably well playing at St Johnstone. He’s a full international with Northern Ireland so we’re absolutely delighted to get the deal done.

"I cannot thank Mr Hemmings, Peter [Ridsdale] and Craig Hemmings enough for getting the deal done which has been stressful to say the least, but we’ve managed to get it over the line which is brilliant and I’m really looking forward to him coming in and being a part of our squad.

"He's a very dynamic midfield player and I’m sure I’ll add a lot to our squad."

Preston North End are pleased to confirm the arrival of Josh Murphy on a season-long loan from Cardiff City.

26-year-old Murphy is a familiar face for head coach Frankie McAvoy, with the two having worked together during their time at Norwich City.

The attacker boasts a wealth of Championship experience, with 187 appearances in the Championship to his name, as well as 38 appearances in the Premier League.

Speaking after completing the loan move, Josh said: "I’m really excited, I’ve always had tough games playing at Deepdale, I know the manager quite well and it’s something I’m looking forward to. I know some of the players as well so it’s an opportunity I’m excited for.

"It was a big factor [Frankie being head coach], going back to the Norwich days he really helped me in my early development so it was a no brainer coming to Preston and having the chance to work with him.

"Hopefully I can repay him and the club and the faith they have put in to me with lots of good performances, goals and assists."

Murphy finalised his move in Cardiff this evening and will join up with his new team-mates in Euxton on Wednesday.

Frankie McAvoy added: "I obviously know Josh well having had him at Norwich City. He’s a very dynamic player, he's got explosive pace and can play in wide areas or through the middle which he did at Cardiff last season and we’re just delighted to get the deal done.

"Getting the deal over the line is magnificent and I’d like to thank Cardiff City as well for their help. We’re absolutely delighted with the addition and can't wait for him to get into training."

    Josh Murphy

You're welcome to him. Did well in the Prem when he first arrived from Norwich for £11m.

Since 2019 he has done little to justify that fee or his wages. Has the odd flash of talent but so unreliable and inconsistent. Often looks like a little boy lost and disappears.

It could be the way he is managed, lack of confidence, lack of fitness, whatever.

I think he will look good for you for a few weeks if given game time and with your manager, who coached him at Norwich he may get encouragement he has not had with us for a while.

However, any form is likely to ebb away by Christmas.

There is a player in there somewhere but finding it, bringing it out and maintaining it is a very big ask.

Sounds right, but we'll see if NE's manager can help him find his form back.

After signing a new deal at Preston North End, Andrew Hughes said he believes he and his team-mates can achieve success during his time at Deepdale.

The defender has penned a new contract until 2024, and with the recent appointment of manager Ryan Lowe coupled with the quality in the squad, Hughesy is confident the club can push towards the top end of the Championship table.

Speaking to iFollow after signing the new deal, he said: “I’m over the moon. I’m delighted to get it done, in the end it’s been an easy decision.

“I feel really settled here. I love the place, I love the club, I love everything about it so it was my main priority to stay at Preston.

“There was not once where I ever really wanted to leave, it was just making sure things were right for myself and the club, and I’m grateful that we’ve managed to get it done.”

PNE currently sit 14th in the Championship table and following back-to-back wins there is a positive mood in the camp right now.

Hughesy puts a lot of that down to the way the new manager has come into the building and instilled confidence into the group.

He said: “I think the gaffer is trying to get the belief back in amongst the squad that we are good enough to compete at the top end of the table and I think he’s doing that.

“We’re not far off, string a few wins together and you’ll find yourselves up there so I think that’s the aim now.

“You look at the teams that are always up there and they’re always believing that they’re going to be in and around it, so we’ve got to put ourselves in that bracket because we’ve got the players to do it. It’s just we’ve got to go and do it.”

Since his arrival three and a half years ago, Hughes has racked up 122 appearances in a North End shirt, and he picked out a few memorable moments during that time.

“There’s a bittersweet one,” he admitted. “The first time I ended up being captain against Wycombe, although we did lose the game, that was a really proud moment for myself.

“I’ll never forget the day that I did sign for this club. I’ve had some great times and there’s been some down times as well, but hopefully going forward now there’s a lot more ups than there is downs.”

One of the more recent good days was Monday's victory away to Stoke City, where Hughesy ended up being the match-winner, with his header completing the turnaround at the bet365 Stadium.

"I really enjoyed it," he smiled. "It’s not often I get to score so I felt like I’ve got to make the most of that one, but I think I’m more happy with the three points to be honest.

"It couldn’t have come at a better time. Going without a game for a long time and then putting in that performance at Stoke, I thought we played really well as a team."

Preston North End are delighted to confirm Patrick Bauer has signed a new contract at the club until at least 2024.

The German defender’s current deal was due to expire in the summer, but he will now stay on at Deepdale for at least the next two and a half years.

Since his arrival in June 2019, the 29-year-old has made 72 appearances for PNE, and he scored his seventh goal for the club in the weekend’s draw against Birmingham City.

Speaking after signing his new contract, Patrick said: “I’m really relieved to get it done. Negotiations have been going on for quite a while so I’m really glad to finally put pen to paper and be here at least for the next two and a half years.

“First of all, me and my family felt really comfortable here in the area. We love the club and I love the boys in the changing room.

“We’ve got a really good changing room and a really good squad, and I feel like we can be really successful in the future. Hopefully we can show that in the next [few] years.”

The former German U20 international has played every minute of football since Ryan Lowe was appointed, and the manager was delighted to see another one of his players sign on, following Andrew Hughes’ new deal a couple of weeks ago.

Ryan said: “I’m really pleased. The negotiations have been going on for a while with Patrick before I came here, so I’m pleased he’s committed his future to Preston North End.”

He added: “He’s a leader, not a vocal one, he’s a silent type of leader. He’s a great footballer, a good defender, along with Hughesy, and all the lads who are playing.

“Obviously these lads with contracts expiring, we want to make sure we look after these type of players to [make sure they] stay with us because we feel they’re valuable to us.”
