Just had a look at planning to get down for this one as I'm off that weekend....£170 return on an empty train sort of put the tin hat on that one!!! I cannot believe the cost of rail post pandemic, the trains are running empty FFS.
I believe I’ve ranted about this on kemptons thread. someone will come on soon and say they got return tickets for 37p in first class with a free bar soon.
The trains are running anything but empty Ric, East Coast trains have been absolutely rammed recently on a weekend. As I discovered to my cost when I went to Fulham, thank goodness I had reserved seats. You need to be booking 6-7 weeks before you travel to get the cheap deals. That was case before the pandemic and remains the case now.
No mention of the card thingy? Doesn't that give a few quid off the match day price .... or has that now been binned with the recent price cut?
I use the trains on a fairly regular basis and I've journeyed East coast 3 weeks ago(Edin-York),it was empty. The trains in Scotland are running empty,in fact ScotRail are cutting 300 services.. I get that the earlier you book the cheaper the fare but I always booked 2-3 weeks in advance and pre pandemic it was £70-£80 return from Glasgow to Hull Paragon...It's doubled!! Have a look at prices for a return from Hull to York,it's touching £40 now at times(used to be £20). As a different example,my recent jaunt to Preston was £42...Fairly busy coming down, dead coming back, that was a Saturday.East Coast are at it!!
If the prices have doubled three weeks ahead of travel, that’s because more people are travelling than before. They use surge pricing for advance tickets, the price goes up as the train fills up. Of course some trains are empty, that’s the effects of the pandemic at play. But on the trains and days you want to travel, my experience is the opposite. Hull to York is £22 return on all direct trains, anyone quoting you £40 is giving you duff information, ripping you off or suggesting a weird route via a detour. Some of the ticket split websites are quite poor.
Based on the times I would need to travel and meeting my connection at York, the cheapest I can get is £34.30 off peak return.
You should be able to get an Anytime Short Distance Return for £29.10, which admittedly is still a lot compared to if there were advance tickets available cheaply for when you wanted.
