    OPPOSITION MANAGER

In 2001, 29-year-old Ferguson was linked with the management post at Wrexham, following the departure of Brian Flynn.[citation needed] At the time, he assisted caretaker manager Joey Jones.[7] After manager Denis Smith was sacked in January 2007, Ferguson was again touted as a candidate, having by now played well over 300 games for the club, but coach Brian Carey was appointed instead.[8]

There were suggestions that Ferguson and Carey had clashed, as Ferguson had expected to be appointed.[citation needed] Carey, who had left Ferguson on the substitutes bench for his first game, denied this.[9] The pair had argued a year previously, following a defeat to Leyton Orient.[10] Ferguson later stated he was disappointed not to be considered for the management position, and stated the club would have done better under him than they did under Carey.[11]

    Peterborough United
Shortly after his father celebrated 20 years as manager of Manchester United, Ferguson followed him into football management. In January 2007 he left Wrexham to become player-manager of fellow League Two side Peterborough United. Previous manager Keith Alexander had been sacked after a run of six straight defeats.[12] He led the club to a 10th-placed finish in his first season of management.[citation needed] In his first full season of management, he took Peterborough to second place in League Two, gaining promotion.[13] He was named League Two manager of the month for March 2008, after Peterborough won six games out of eight in the month.[citation needed]

In his second full season, 2008–09, he led Peterborough to second place and automatic promotion to the Championship.[citation needed] He also won the League One Manager of the Month award for March 2009, following six straight wins.[citation needed] Ferguson left Peterborough in November 2009, by mutual consent, with Posh bottom of the table.[14]

    Preston North End
In January 2010, Ferguson signed as manager of Preston North End.[15] His first game at home as a manager was an FA Cup match against Chelsea on 23 January 2010 which his side lost 2–0.[citation needed] On 14 September 2010, Ferguson was charged with misconduct by the FA after his behaviour in the tunnel towards the referee after a 4–3 Championship defeat by Burnley.[16] After 49 games in charge, winning 13, drawing 12 and losing 24 games, he was sacked as manager on 29 December 2010, with Preston North End bottom of the Championship.[17]

Following his sacking by Preston, his father Sir Alex Ferguson immediately recalled all three Manchester United players on loan at Preston; Joshua King, Ritchie De Laet, and Matty James.[18] In addition, the Stoke City manager Tony Pulis recalled the two Stoke players on loan at Preston; Danny Pugh and Michael Tonge. This meant that in a single week, Preston had lost five key first-team players, effectively sealing the team's relegation.[19][20]

During a disappointing period as manager of Preston, in a spell which lasted less than a year, Ferguson had a comeback win in September 2010 when his Preston side beat Leeds United 6–4 after being 4–1 down at Elland Road. After the match Ferguson said: "I have never been involved in such an amazing game."[21]

    Return to Peterborough United
In January 2011, Gary Johnson left his job as manager at Peterborough United, with the club several points adrift of the playoff places.[citation needed] On 12 January 2011, Ferguson was re-appointed as manager at Peterborough on a four-and-a-half-year contract.[22] His first match ended up in a defeat away to league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion, but the following week, in his first game at London Road since his return, Peterborough beat Hartlepool United 4–0.[citation needed] Peterborough United's promotion hopes was given a boost with a 5–3 win over promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday.[citation needed] A 0–5 away thumping of Oldham Athletic kept Ferguson's men within touching distance of the automatic promotion places.[citation needed]

The club ultimately finished fourth in League One, and after beating Milton Keynes 4–3 on aggregate, reached the play-off Final at Old Trafford against Huddersfield Town.[citation needed] Peterborough went on to defeat Huddersfield 3–0 to clinch a return to the Championship, just one year after they had been relegated.[23] By the end of the season, Peterborough had become the top-scoring side in the whole country, with 106 goals in total; their 46 league games generated a total of 181 goals, or 3.93 per game.[citation needed]

Peterborough spent two seasons in the Championship after winning promotion, before being relegated back to League One after losing to Crystal Palace 3–2 on the final day of the season. Peterborough had led the match with seven minutes remaining, but went on to lose in the final minute; a draw would have been enough to keep Peterborough in the Championship. Their total of 54 points during that season is to date the highest amount accrued by a relegated side in Championship history.[24] On 21 February 2015, following a 3–0 away defeat at Milton Keynes Dons which left the team 15th in the League One table, Ferguson left Peterborough United by mutual consent.[25]

    Doncaster Rovers
Ferguson was appointed manager of League One club Doncaster Rovers on 16 October 2015.[26] They were relegated at the end of the 2015–16 season, but a third place finish in their only season in League Two saw the club win promotion back to League One in May 2017. Ferguson resigned from his role as manager on 4 June 2018, after guiding Rovers to 15th placed finish in their first season back in Sky Bet League One.[27]

    Second return to Peterborough United
Ferguson was re-appointed as manager of League One club Peterborough United on 26 January 2019 for the third time with a deal agreed until the end of season after the dismissal of Steve Evans, with Gavin Strachan as his assistant.[28] [29] In May 2021, after missing out on the previous season's play-offs due to the season being curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Ferguson successfully guided Peterborough to promotion to the Championship.

After three away games on the bounce, Preston North End return to Deepdale on Saturday to host Peterborough United.

Posh make the journey to PR1 for the first time since March 2015, in the season which PNE clinched promotion to the Championship, and Peterborough managed to do the same last term after eight years in League One.

    PNE Team News

Frankie McAvoy confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Tom Barkhuizen, who has been isolating since last week, has been unwell suffering with Covid.

There will be a phased return of seven to nine days once he is well enough to return to training, and everyone at the club sends Tom their best wishes.

    The Opposition

Peterborough head into the weekend having experienced every result outcome so far this season, having lost, won and drawn in their opening three games respectively.

It was late heartbreak in their last game which prevented them from consecutive victories, as 84th and 96th-minute goals from Cardiff defender Aden Flint earned his side a point away from home.

In charge of Posh and making a return to Deepdale on Saturday is former PNE manager Darren Ferguson, who was in charge of the Lilywhites between January and December 2010.

    Key Stats

Peterborough were the top scorers in League One last season, netting 83 times on their way to promotion to the Championship.

Striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, formerly of Rotherham United, played a direct part in over 40 per cent of those goals, with 34 goal contributions, but is yet to score or assist so far this season.

This is a game which has very rarely ended goalless, with just three of the 24 meetings between the two sides involving clean sheets for both defences, but equally so, only one of the last eight meetings has seen both teams score.

    Our Last Meeting

PNE last faced Peterborough, a League One side at the time, in January 2016 in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

It was the Posh, managed by Graham Westley, who came out on top, with goals from Martin Samuelsen and Conor Washington sealing their place in the fifth round.

Dean Whitestone will be the man with the whistle on Saturday, and he is an official Preston North End are fairly familiar with, given that he has taken charge of eight of their fixtures in the last two seasons.

Those games included the fantastic 4-2 victory away at Brentford last October, while he blew the final whistle just moments after Brad Potts scored a dramatic equaliser at home to Norwich in April.

He’s seen plenty of goals go in this season, too, refereeing Fulham’s 5-1 victory over Huddersfield Town and the Championship opener between AFC Bournemouth and West Brom which ended 2-2.

    MACS VIEW
After the Huddersfield horror show we badly need a result and who better to get it against is Darren, still rankles that after he was potted by us Pulis and his dad called all their loan players back. Never been convinced with any of his teams ability to defend but as we don't shoot they might get a rare clean sheet tomorrow.
Even this early in the season this has to be classed as a must win game because with all due respects to the teams we have played we face tougher tasks ahead in the weeks coming up.
Lose this and the rebellion on the terrace will start to get louder.
Not sure whether I will be there forecast is poor and the side I am playing against at cricket do not have covers suspect I'll end up at Deepdale

Patrick Bauer’s goal on his return to Championship action earned Preston North End their first league victory of the campaign.

Bauer opened the scoring for PNE just 14 minutes into his first league appearance since picking up an Achilles injury in December 2020, heading home Ryan Ledson’s free-kick.

Team news revealed a blow for North End, with Alan Browne, Liam Lindsay and Ched Evans all missing through isolation, while Tom Barkhuizen continued his recovery from Covid.

Bauer was one of the men to come in and he scored with what was the first real chance of the game, with Ledson sending a brilliant cross into the box from a free-kick, and the returning German was there to head home.

North End then had three chances to double their lead within as many minutes around the half-hour mark. First it was skipper Daniel Johnson who came close, seeing a left-footed effort rise over the bar, before the woodwork then prevented Ben Whiteman from 20 yards, with the ball bouncing down off the underside of the bar, but staying out.

Moments later, a fantastic pass from Sepp van den Berg sent Scott Sinclair one-on-one with goalkeeper Christy Pym, but Peterborough’s No.1 came out on top.

PNE went into the break a goal ahead and were nearly made to pay for not taking those chances five minutes into the second half. Siriki Dembele broke into the home box and showed great feet to work himself into an area to take aim from just more than six yards, but van den Berg did superbly well to block on the line, before Jordan Storey and Andrew Hughes then threw themselves in front of follow-ups.

The Lilywhites then had two chances to double their lead in the same attack, with Sinclair firstly being denied by the feet of Pym, and Whiteman then struck a fierce half volley just wide.

Daniel Iversen was called into action on 60 minutes as he produced a superb save to keep out Jonson Clarke-Harris’ header, but the offside flag went up anyway.

Andrew Hughes then almost had a goal to his name against his former club as Ledson’s corner was headed back across goal at the far post by Bauer to Hughes, and he saw his header tipped over the bar.

In the 77th minute, substitute Emil Riis went on a powerful run down the left and did so well to beat his man twice on his way to goal, but he couldn’t quite finish it off, seeing Pym save his low strike.

DJ and Brad Potts were denied in stoppage time with chances that might have killed the game off, and Iversen had to produce a brilliant save to deny Clarke-Harris in the final action of the match before the referee blew his whistle to confirm a well-deserved PNE victory.

PNE line-up: Iversen; Storey, Bauer, Hughes; van den Berg, Whiteman, Ledson, Johnson, Earl; Maguire (Potts, 79), Sinclair (Riis, 69).

Subs not used: Rudd, Cunningham, Bayliss, Rafferty, Rodwell-Grant.

Peterborough line-up: Pym; Kent, Thompson, Knight (Randall); Ward, Norburn, Grant, Burrows (Szmodics, 66), Butler; Dembele (Marriott, 66), Clarke-Harris.

Subs not used: Cornell, Edwards, Tomlinson, Barker.

    Referee: Mr D Whitestone

    Attendance: 9,952 (690 away fans)

Preston North End manager Frankie McAvoy told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"I asked the players to stand up and be counted. We had no points but the past is the past and our destiny was in our own hands.

"I asked them to go and take the game to Peterborough, who play a system which is tough to play against, but I thought offensively today we did really well.

"We worked so hard yesterday on what we needed to do and how to create opportunities and chances and we did that. The only part, the hardest part, is taking more of those opportunities that come along."

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:

"It's a very disappointing result, and a very disappointing performance in the first half.

"We didn't play with any conviction. I felt it was a game where we could come here and win.

"We have got an issue with set-pieces. We have brought in Andy Butler to help and it is not his fault as we line up accordingly, we're just not aggressive enough. And a big part of the Championship is set-pieces."

Expected more from Posh. A good club with a history of producing good players.

I remember Barry Fry managing Barnet. He did a lot of good work there. Quite a character.
