Swansea City v Plymouth Argyle Competition - EFL Cup Stage - Round 2 Venue - Swansea.com Stadium Date - 24 August 2021 Kick Off - 7:00pm Following their excellent, albeit somewhat surprising, win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate, next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea squad is a Carabao Cup match against Plymouth Argyle at the Swansea.com Stadium. Last Friday evening, live on Sky Sports, the Swans secured a first Championship win under new head coach Russell Martin as they overcame Bristol City in an enthralling encounter at Ashton Gate. The Swans weathered intense early pressure from the home side before Joel Piroe's excellent first-half strike on the rebound put them ahead. Bristol City pressed intently after the break, with Andreas Weimann among those to threaten while yellow cards piled up on both sides (10 in total) as the referee waved his card like confetti: was the match that feisty or was the ref determined to be the star of the show on live TV? The following day, in League One, two goals from Ryan Hardie and one from Luke Jephcott allowed Plymouth Argyle to win comfortably away to bottom club Shrewsbury Town. Steve Cotterill's Shrewsbury side are now the only team in League One without a point, having failed to manage even a single goal in their first four matches. Argyle achieved their victory withou centre-back James Wilson, whose booking in last Tuesday's 1-1 home draw with Cambridge United was upgraded to a red at a hearing on Friday, earning him a three-game ban, which makes him unavailable to play the Swans. Since their first meeting in January 1921, the Swans have played Plymouth on 83 competitive occasions, winning 33, losing 32 and drawing 18. The Swans played Plymouth in a pre-season friendly a month ago, with goals from Whittaker and Cullen earning the Swans a 2-1 away win: Turning to Tuesday evening, with Plymouth (I suspect) likely to field a strong side, as long as Russell Martin doesn’t make too many changes, I think that the Swans will run out 2-0 winners.
Thanks Taff. I think RM will make a few changes to rest key players probably Piroe and Laird amongst them. Good opportunity, if they are fit, to give the returning players a run out eg. Naughton and Smith. This should be a comfortable win and so it's a 2-0 for me too.
Down in Tenby on holidays, before heading to Swansea for the weekend. I’m going to the game, went to the Reading game so I’m a lucky charm, Swans win 3-0 for me. Funny enough, I had to do a double take today as Bidewll was walking around Tenby with his friends and dogs.
Me and the misses were down that way today Amroth for lunch and a walk on the beach with the dog. I'll be there Tuesday , with a nice early KO and an expectation of a good performance and win , not saying for who though
Thanks Taff.. giving this a miss Tuesday expecting wholesale changes to rest the first team players that are not injured. Still think we will win this game in front of a low crowd....hope it is enjoyable for those making the effort
A potential banana skin as most cup games are , hope he uses the game to fit round pegs into round holes although using Manning in the centre of defence v Bristol worked a treat so what the hell do I know.
Given that after the Bristol game RM said that the players are tired, I would expect almost an entirely different starting lineup. Still not sure why they are so tired 4 games into the season though.
I think he is referring to being 'mentally fit' as well as physical. The physical side will come soon enough but the mental side will take longer
Hope this doesn't spread to the 1st team. Already had Bennett, Naughton, Downes and Cabango affected. Kris O’ Leary has seen his pre season plans scrambled as a Covid virus outbreak within his under 23 squad has scuppered any chance of fulfilling tomorrow nights game against Sheffield United
He wants to be the centre of attention ….. That game against Stoke is largely remembered for his ridiculous decision to award a late penalty for handball against us to allow Stoke to get a 3-3, rather than our fantastic fight back from 0-2 down to lead 3-2…
I have no idea as to the score, could win 3-0 or lose 3-0. On the other hand would surprise me if it was a draw and pens. Like a win to keep it going.
I think Manning will be rested and possibly Laird. I would play Cullen.up front with Lowe to see if it can ignite some form. So a possible chance for Mcfayden tonight.
