he was roundly applauded for it too. another one that prings to mind in sportsmanship was di canio stopping the game with the goal at his mercy after a player had went down very heavy. slightly unrelated i guess.

back to the point though, as players became more and more aware that the camera was watching they might not need to check up on the television after a while if retrospective punishments are meated out for cheating meaning there mihgt not be as many hold ups.

the only probelm is you'd end up getting people wanting checks made on perfectly legitimate tackles. it would have to be at the refs discretion but that would heap even more pressure on them. the only way i could see it working is if the ref blows for a foul and then he's just messaged through the ear piece as to whether or not it was right that way it would save the players from 'requesting' a second look. it would be automatic.

Well researched GRB, I'm happy to know I didn't imagine it, good for Robbie Fowler controversial at times but fair also.

It depends what you define as a dive, maybe Suarez thinks diving is going down without any contact, while others think its making the most of any contact. I wouldn't say Suarez is a diver, if its the first one, as he always does get touched when going down, he just overexaggerates how much he was actually clipped.

I think its a cultural thing. a south american trait as many imports from that part of the world seem to do it. maybe he'll grow out of it the more hes vilified for it.

I hate divers and it is an unfortunate part of the game. Most commentators call it "being clever", which only reinforces the behavior. Retroactive bans would be a great way to deal with it. Falling down because you are "touched" is just as bad...

I certainly couldn't last a full season without a ban in today's game.

I don't see Saurez as a diver...More of a....drama queen? There's no point in denying it just because he is a Liverpool player, he has fantastic footwork but other than his fancy skills he will always look for that penalty, free kick or yellow/red card. I dislike his attitude but thankful that he is a Liverpool player because I would hate him if he were a player for someone else.

This i why i didn't think this particular thread would descend into a farce as it seems to be the majprity opinion that he's a very good player buit like you say theres no use in denying it just because he plays for liverpool. scousers are football loving people that like nothing more than a player that has flair but can get stuck in.

who knows a couple of seasons of having the monkey on his back of being tarred a diver and he might grow out of it?

If Dalglish thinks it could make him and the team an easy target (for refs/defenders..whoever) then I think he might start telling him to calm down. Otherwise he might start getting left out of the first 11 like Rooney has on a couple of occasions.

Suarez is no better or worse than many other talented players who are tainted by this trait- Ronaldo, Drogba, Nani etc. If he's on your team you turn a blind eye, if he's one of your rivals, you milk it for all it's worth, but I'd still like to see it eradicated because it's annoying.
The one who irritated me the most I think was Arjen Robben, very talented player but diving all over the place all the time- and that business when Reina tickled his cheek was just laughable.
I saw him a few weeks ago with Bayern and he hasn't changed. Falls over at the merest whisper of a touch in his back or something, goes down clutching his face, rolls around for a bit then peeps through his fingers to see if the refs having any, sees the game has moved down to the other end of the pitch so gets up and carries on.
    Priceless.

aye robben is a prime example...but he's not coming out in the national media and saying he doesn't do it. it only makes you look clueless to deny it. a simple no comment would d.

IMO pundits don't help either. The way they say 'if there's a touch you have every right to go down' is sending out the wrong message to youngsters who are learning the game. Football is NOT a non contact sport but attitudes like this mean it gets nearer and nearer.

That's one thing about Ray Wilkins, he doesn't say much stuff like that. You'll often hear him say something like "to any youngsters watching..."

What really annoys me is when pundits have a go at someone when they go down too easily...yet when someone stays on their feet in the box they say "he probably should have gone down there".

The thing that bugs me most about diving is that it is normally done by people who are more than good enough not to have to. Villa, Ronaldo, Suarez etc. all divers but all good enough to comfortably beat defenders and score goals.

I agree with all of the above points about pundits.
If I was a ref I'd have a talk with serial offenders before the game and say " I'm not gonna award you a free kick unless you're dead so stay on your bloody feet and we'll get on fine."

The other ting that Ray Wilkins says a lot is "my word"

Next time he's commentating, listen out for it, see how many times he says it during a match.

Unlike Patrice Evra, modern day lying scumbag. Strange how not one of his team mates, manager in fact anyone from Utd has come out and backed his claims.
