Preview... Sunderland Under-23s begin their 2021-22 season in the Premier League 2 Division 2 on Monday night, taking on Fulham at the Stadium of Light (KO 7pm). Elliott Dickman’s young side enjoyed a fruitful campaign last term, putting together a remarkably impressive run after Christmas to reach the promotion Play-Off final – losing out to Crystal Palace on penalties back in May. The club’s U23 side have brought in a number of new recruits in what is expected to be another exciting season in the Premier League 2, with supporters in attendance for the opening match at the SoL. Opposition Fulham make the long trip to Wearside under the guidance of Mark Pembridge, a former Welsh international who made over 500 professional appearances for the likes of Everton, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday, finishing his playing career with the Cottagers. In a very tightly contested second division of PL2 last season, Fulham finished 10th whilst the Lads took fifth position – the last remaining Play-Off spot. However, the West Londoners only managed five points less than Dickman’s side and will look to present a real test to the youngsters on the night. Team news Several new arrivals could be in line to make debuts for the U23 team on Wearside. Goalkeeper Jacob Carney is recovering from a finger injury, but numerous signings who featured in pre-season including Tyrese Dyce, Harrison Sohna and Ethan Kachosa may be involved. With last season’s top scorer Josh Hawkes now primarily in Lee Johnson’s first-team plans, opportunity knocks for talented forwards Benji Kimpioka and Will Harris.
