Sunderland had similar situations in our first seasons in the league. Wholesale changes didn't work. At the time we were making our signings sound much better than they were because ultimately, we have only been signing players from the same level or a level below. We can see that in hindsight. It was a mistake and it's already been said on here but a slow build is the better option in situations like yours. We've kept our team together and this season so far we have added real quality and we look much better for it.

Pritchard from Huddersfield. Played in the premier league and was once sold for 11m.
Doyle (Loan) Man City. He's a star. We can see already he'll probably play for England one day.
Cirkin from Tottenham. Left Back highly regarded by Mourinho. Couldn't get a game because of Sessegnon, Davies and Reguillon in front of him. Tottenham fans have voiced their displeasure at him being allowed to leave on a permanent.
Alves (Loan) from West Ham. He's played all their preseason games and registered in their first team squad. Denmark international.

That's all we've done. We probably need to bring another striker in and that will be us done. We've touched up on the team and look so much better for it and the new quality is noticeable to what we have been used too.

So i stick up for what i think is best for my team, unlike budgie Yorkie who has been pretty much against the whole regime from day one. I mean come on....Marcus Evans, Paul Lambert and Alan Judge.....we needed change and the change that has come is good, it may take time but ffs it's a massive improvement!

Lol, Sunderland from the last few seasons were far better than the dross we had, we had a team of disinterested, overpaid losers who didn't give a **** and they really didn't give a ****!! If we had added just a few, it would have made no difference.

Yeah so did we, we were still carrying them last season and we've just let the last of them go. A little bit at a time its been done.

Haven't managed to chase Will Grigg yet but I'm confident he'll be gone by the end of the month. Fat money grabbing useless bastard.

What i have seen so far this season, the two players i feel have been poor is KVY and Wolfenden, two that have remained from last season funnily enough, kinda says it all. Saying that, i think Wolfenden will be bombed within the next few weeks and that can't come quick enough!!

Do you think Sunderland will go up this season? You’ve won your first two league games of the season, something I don’t think you’ve done since the 1980s. I’m surprised you haven’t spent more money in the market, after your takeover. But perhaps you’re doing things in a more measured way and look to have built since Johnson came in, who I think is a good manager for this level.

Got a soft spot for Sunderland and one of my old uni mates is involved in the media/marketing team up there. Hopefully we’ll both get out of this division and back into the Championship next season :emoticon-0148-yes:

I get that but our club was bad to the core, from top to bottom, from inside to out, i fully understand the massive changes and in time....I'm 100% certain it will bare fruit!

It does have a good vibe about the place, at the moment. The new owners have spent a lot of money on infrastructure, just not on players yet. We are also taking an approach driven by data. We've employed a specialist data analyst from the deloitte group to overlook everything. I was very sceptical because football isn't played through data on a computer but from what we've seen from our signings, so far, whatever they're doing is working because the team is visibly much better this time around. I think we are moneyballing it too. Bringing in young quality players for a low fee who have been identified as having a lot of improvement in them, hoping to sell on at big profits in the future.

I know Jebbison has been up here more than a few times now as he's one we are looking at bringing in from Sheff Utd but he's not being guaranteed the game time he's looking for so apparently that's touch and go if we bring him in. Him and Stewart competiting for the forward place with a couple of our promising youngsters would be more than satisfactory.

I agree about Johnson. I was delighted when we brought him in. Nice tactics to watch, we press high up the pitch and always look to get the ball out wide and forward at every opportunity. It's also refreshing as a Sunderland supporter to have a manager that tries to win every game, no matter what. Today we were 2-0 up and coasting, then MK Dons scored a goal to make it 2-1. Within minutes Johnson had hooked off a DM and replaced him with Pritchard who is an attacking midfielder to go looking for the 3rd to kill the game off. I've never seen that attitude with our managers before. I like it, though.

Hopefully you'll get up, mate. We are both big fish in this league if the truth is known so it would be good to meet you at a higher level like it's always been <ok>

I said from the off I think Cook requires at least 3 transfer windows before we can judge him, unless he completely tanks it and we can see progress I can accept on missing out on promotion this season.

Unfortunately so far he has tanked it and he has taken a very high risk strategy with gutting a whole squad and trying to build a new one over 1 transfer window plus bringing in a very inexperienced coaching team around him. But given his previous record at clubs where he appears to have done similar things in terms of turn over of players when he first arrives we have to trust him. He seems to have recruited pretty well, although clearly we need more recruits at the back.

I've not really been caught up in the whole we're going to get promoted this season malarkey as was the case the previous 2 seasons because like those I think we'll need alot of things to click into place. A disrupted preseason in my experience rarely brings success with the squad usually always playing catch up or getting injured.

As I said as long as we can see progress and the formings of a good team who can achieve promotion over the next few seasons I think Cook needs to be given time, one of my biggest concerns is we have signed players who have come or could have gone to Championship clubs and if it doesn't look like we will achieve promotion any time soon I worry some of those may lose interest or want away.

I think it was a huge mistake to make 10 changes for the league cup game. If Cook’s 1st choice 11 need time to gel, then why not play them rather than play a completely different team. As ITFC fans, we have been so starved for any sort of success for 20 years that the negativity comes out very quickly. We need a 1st win of the season to calm everyone down. PC decided to ditch the entire squad that was here and start over - I have no problem with that but with all the players he’s bringing in (& I think more on the way) does he know what his best 11 is? KVY has lost a yard of pace at the moment - not surprising with how long he was out for and the rest of the defence terrifies me. Of all the players let go, Wilson was the strangest one for me. He was the best centre back at the club last season and considering we need 4 for the squad, I though he should have been 1 of them. Oh well, on to Cheltenham and hopefully 3 points which will get everyone smiling

And in summary this sums up 2 things

1 - how absolutely clueless you are about football, Wolf isn't remotely good enough right now

2 - Why I don't post on here anymore very often.

    Wake up, and learn football!

Ptc, can't see Cook being given 3 transfer windows but I know what you are saying. We can't keep changing managers, at some point we have to say enough is enough and give a manager a couple of seasons to take us up. I could understand all the meltdowns if we weren't showing any improvement but I think we are and this is with a group of players that are learning about their teammates. I honestly think that come October we will start seeing real progress. I would rather that than only make a few changes and still be stuck with the dross from previous seasons. Ok, we may not get promoted this season but watch us roar next season!!

I don’t think it was a viable option to do a ‘slow’ transition by bringing in the odd new player and bedding them in amongst what we had, that’s a kinda half way house where we’d still be at risk of losing because we were only getting results by playing ultra defensive hoof it footy. If we then tried to play a bit with a new winger or striker here or there the rest wouldn’t be able to play that way and we’d still struggle. Most of them were Colchester level so we really needed a total clear out.

I was always of the view I’d rather we played great attacking footy and lost than carried on a slow demise of dull rubbish that eeked out enough points. It’s led us to L1. Eventually the balance gets struck as it did for Wigan and Portsmouth.

PC was clearly told he could pick his formation, tactics and style based on signing a whole new set of players capable of fulfilling it. that takes time to do and to get right. Tonking Newport in a cup and then being tired for the league game isn’t a good idea.

and mirecambe look a very good side too btw Stockton scored again yesterday. It’s a hellishly competitive division this year!
