Greece is the only place I've ever been on a holiday abroad. I've done it a lot because I love the place and the people that much, made many friends there and even did quite well with the Greek language. To see it on fire like this is heartbreaking.
The things we love are always the things that can hurt us the most. We love plastic, cars, electric everything and global travel. The earth doesn’t I spent a summer fighting fires in the New Forest and Snowdonia. Nasty thing fire. Nearly as bad as water.
Havent been for a long time but ye great people What put me off in the 80’s was those Dan Air flights home at 2 in a morning and it was always thunder n lightning Hated it
I love the Greek islands, we were about to book a trip to Mykonos before COVID hit. Terrible in Turkey as well.
Agree 100% - my fave place and best holidays have all been on Rhodes; peopke watching by Rhodes harbour with a good coffee and Metaxa brandy is just about my idea of heaven.
Myself and Mrs A are fans of the Greek Isles. I just love the unkempt beauty and the laid back culture. It is awful seeing the current situation on the news.
Got caught up in a forest fire 2006 Halkadiki Greece, had to flee the apartment we rented and spent 2 nights and days on the beach sleeping in the car. A week later the place flooded.
Love Greece and the Greek Islands, Kos, Crete, Rhodes, Zante. Corfu not so much, tried Spain last time and not a patch on Greece, hoping to go in September back to one of the Islands.
Corfu last October. Great place, great people and crystal blue sea to swim in. I’ll be back this October all been well..
Off to our place on Syros in ten days’ time. Virtually no trees there, but horrible what is happening elsewhere. Not all Greek islands are lovely, though. Mykonos has been ruined and is stupidly expensive. Lots of Covidiots too.
Went to the Greek Islands in 1977 and loved it. I had returned to the UK by myself for a friend's funeral and also went to Hull to meet my mother-in-law and loads of my husband's relations for the first time after marrying in Aus. in 1968.
Two weeks in Greece when my children when they were young. We took our David my nephew with us. 14 of the best days of my life. I have a photo of my youngest Sophie in a pram with David and his aunt either side. Sophie is now a psychiatric nurse and works with children. I have nothing but warmth for the Greek people and devastated for what is happening now. No one should ever have their home destroyed and have no where to live with your children. We lost David a few years ago and I would say I look at that photo on a regular basis, those days in Greece walk right back in. On another note there has been a fire burning in Russia for a few months and it has destroyed over 15 million acres of land.
Corfu is great. The only place to avoid is Kavos which has been spoilt, as have other places in Europe by pissheads the majority of who are Brits.
After the Norman Conquest, lots of Anglo-Saxon refugees travelled to Greece to join the Varangian Guard. The Byzantine Emperor even granted the Anglo-Saxon refugees a settlement somewhere in the Black Sea. The Greeks are very warm and hospitable people. Awful to see their country on fire like this, as well as other countries.
