France thumped by Mexico Brazil 2 up over Germany and Argentina losing to ……Australia in the men’s football. I think squad selection may not be as standard for this tournament…..

Team GB not there cause the Scots couldn’t agree, as if any of them would have played anyway

The Olyroos have started their Tokyo Olympics campaign in spectacular fashion with an upset 2-0 victory over Argentina.
Lachlan Wales and Marco Tilio were on target in a combative contest which saw 10 players booked and Argentina defender Francisco Ortega sent off before half-time.
Olyroos coach Graham Arnold had promised his players would produce 'something special' in Japan and they duly delivered under the closed roof of the Sapporo Dome.

Watched two minutes of the Opening Ceremony, a very sad affair, a few athletes from every country waving flags, wearing masks in an empty stadium, with some very odd dancing from some locals. Quite old style eastern bloc feel to it.

That’s enough of that, I think. One brilliant fact, a Ukrainian gymnast, aged 46, is competing in her eighth Olympics, and is old enough to be the grandmother of some of those she will be competing against.

Murray wins a doubles match against 2nd seeds.
    Cycling exciting.

I love the olympics, so will try and generate enough enthusiasm for the whole forum by myself

Algerian judoka Fethi Nourine has forfeited his place in the Tokyo Olympics after being told he would have to face Israeli judoka Tohar Butbul, Israeli media reported on Thursday.

The two would have faced each other in the second round if both were to advance.

Nourine was quoted in Algerian media as saying, "We are not going to raise the Israeli flag and we will not get our hands dirty with competition against an Israeli."

A senior member of the Algerian delegation was quoted as having explained the reason for Nourine’s decision by saying, "We were unlucky with the lottery. The reason for stepping down is because Nourine may face an Israeli."

The incident should come as no surprise, according to the reports, as two years ago, Nourine quit a competition in Tokyo in order to avoid facing Butbul.

The Israeli went on to finish in seventh place in the World Championships.

Algeria, like many Muslim states, does not have relations with Israel. In April of 2018, an Algerian court sentenced eight people to 10 years in prison over espionage for Israel.

In December, the head of Algeria's largest Islamist party labeled Morocco's Prime Minister Saad Eddine El-Othmani a "traitor" over his country’s decision to normalize ties with Israel.

Athletes from countries that do not have ties with Israel regularly withdraw from sporting competitions in order to avoid facing Israelis.

The most famous incident in recent years was that of Iranian judoka Saeid Mollaei, who was forced to throw a match against Israelis, even after the International Judo Federation (IJF) and Iran reached an agreement which stipulates that Iran will no longer boycott competitions against Israelis.

Mollaei later travelled to Germany to begin the process of applying for asylum. He was recognized as a refugee in Germany in November of 2019 and recently won a silver medal at the Tel Aviv Grand Slam, where he represented Mongolia.

Watched the whole of the triathlon last night from the fiasco of the start to the finish, where a Norwegian who’s physique did not seem suited to distance running in any way, ran away from the British bloke Alex Yee to take gold, deservedly. Quite hypnotic stuff.

Congratulations to Adam Peaty and, finally, Tom Daley/Matty Lee on their golds.

The time difference and the very poor TV coverage, due to the Discovery Channel buying all the European rights, which has led the BBC to put on some real hybrid type broadcasting, mostly from a shed in Salford with loads of CGI, with people you have never seen before actually in Japan, is making this an odd experience for the viewer. The fact that the BBC can only show two sports simultaneously could well damage the more obscure sports which won’t get the exposure which attracts kids to try them they had in the past. Bit of a shame.

Some amazing performances this morning. Tom Pidcock was incredible and dominated the cross-country cycling. Matty Lee and Tom Daley produced an incredible dive at the end to take the gold - at one stage of their dive you couldn’t even see two divers they were so synchronised. And Adam Peatty continues to be a beast in the pool yet again - an incredible incredible swimmer.
Well done GB today! There can’t be a more incredible experience for an athlete than to take an Olympic gold against your peers!

I dont know what the Chinese coaches said to their dive pair after they lost but they looked like they were being condemned.
