Like a shot. I was one of the 26,000 who turned up on the final day in '77. We played Leicester (and won 2-0, which was a ****ing rarity back then) but were already relegated, I didn't have a season ticket and I was bound to have been short of money...but I felt that I had to be there. I needed to embrace relegation and get ready for Oldham, Mansfield and Hull and stand on The Shelf and shout myself stupid on that hot sweaty afternoon. I'd even go back just for the football. Going to football was ****ing fantastic in the 70's and early 80's. If you missed out, I'm sorry, but it's never been anything close to it since. Sitting down is bollocks. Having to buy a ticket in advance is bollocks. Memberships are bollocks. Standing on The Shelf was like being the king of the world - win, lose or draw. It just was.
Unless I've missed something, the rumours linking us to Cristian Romero make no sense: he's halfway through a two year loan from Juve so, unless Atlanta have triggered the option to buy him, they're in no position to sell him - and if they have triggered the option it would be a bad decision to go for him as they'd hike up the fee from what they paid
A man who is tired of London, is tired of life. People in Scotland are just preparing for hibernation.
Ali Gold says that Paratici negotiated the loan deal and as such he knows the costs involved and reckons that the 2 clubs can make it a win/win, but I like you have my doubts.
The theory is that as Paratici was the man who loaned Romero to Atalanta in the first place, he knows all the parties involved. So Atalanta will trigger the buy option they have for (I think) about €16m and then we’ll hand them a nice profit on top of that so Atalanta can reinvest in their squad.
And the beauty of going back is that you would know better times are around the corner. Ossie and Ricky were a year away, back to back FA Cups were on their way and you'd get to see Glenn Hoddle develop into one of our greatest ever players. If I'm standing I would hope to avoid some of the crushing/violence that happened then and as long as I had my 1970's knees, then that would be fun. Musically, I would get on board with Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Clash, enjoy Genesis before they go too pop (including P Gabriel's early solo work), and sit tight until I could lust after Kate Bush in a few years time.
Oh yeah I missed Lamela off my list. That’s 13 players at the club that I personally don’t rate. Obviously they’re not going to sell all of them in one window but I hope half can be got rid of.
Going to lots of gigs has the benefit of keeping my knees in 70's football mode. Mr brother's season ticket was in Row 10 and the stewards let fans stand throughout. So, I reckon I'd be okay, although the average age on The Shelf in the 70's was about 18, not 59 as I now am...
Today's batch of reports have Sanchez heading there way as part of the deal, but I think this is where joining the dots has entered the conversation I can understand using Sanchez as a makeweight to get the Kounde price down, and Sevilla agreed, but this looks like a straight swap between players so we're not topping up the transfer kitty
I was often on the Shelf in the 70s. Maybe I bounced into you when Hoddle scored one of his free kicks (did anyone ever save one of those?)
I'd try and get as central as possible by getting there early. Probably my strongest memory is Ossie's header against United in the cup in '78. I can't think of a day when it was more packed and when that went in, the stand was moving all over the place.
Yep, if they want out then get rid. Rarely does a player play at their maximum when it’s known they want out.
