They will all have wanted to take a penalty too. It’s a lottery. Jorginho doesn’t miss penalties. Ever. Yet he missed last night.

I expect we'll hear about how the penalty takers were decided, it must have been discussed beforehand. Tine to draw the lane and move on it's Mrs Jab's birthday Wednesday, I don't think it'll be an Italian meal and French bubbles in the bucks fizz although she is fond of an Aperol spritzer.

I do really dislike those penalties though and would happily see them outlawed.

I just knew Rashford was going to miss when he walked up. Could tell Donnarumma would be brave enough to just stand up to him to put him off.

Too late …. The morons who cheered them when England were winning were very quick to turn on them. Makes me sick :emoticon-0121-angry

Think it’s all been said really. Great effort by the team. I’m no tactician, but just wish we made some changes earlier, as I don’t think we were ever going to keep them out for 45, and though Italy were never going to make it easy, we didn’t seem to have an outlet. The World Cup could be interesting.

Calling it now - Bellingham will play a starring role in the 2022 World Cup.

Absolutely, Laces! It concerned me too. I agree about the Italian need for a proper striker too. I kept saying to myself as yet another cross went in and the only player in the England box was 5’4” Insigne, “Graziano woukd have buried that!” - if they can find a good striker and some replacements for their CBs (unless they go on into their 40s - which seems possible :emoticon-0102-bigsm), they could easily win the World Cup next year or the one after. I love the way Mancini has got them playing such exciting football.
However - well done ALL the England players (what might have been if Danny and James had taken 2 of those penalties :emoticon-0103-cool:) and to Gareth. Onwards and upwards.
And a big **** off to those appalling “fans” who, again, let us all down with their filthy, violent, racist, drunken actions. They should never be allowed near ANY football match again ……

If he wanted to use those 5 penalty takers then Kane or Rashford should have been last considering they are designated takers for club. Southgate bottled everything in that game tactically then messed up the shootout order. I think Rashford's brain was not only scrambled from having to play completely out of pos at RB, but then he was put on 3rd pen which was weird in the order. He should have been 1st or 5th. Not making excuses considering I already made a huge rant slating Sgate, just pissed off. I would have thought Henderson taking one over Saka or Sancho would have made more sense anyway and taking him off left us wide open for 5 minutes in extra time where we almost conceded. Then as mentioned before Sterling could have stepped up as a senior player but didn't. Shaw takes set pieces and scored in the match so should have been an option too. Overall assessment your comment is right yes.

Whilst unlikeable at times I think it's unlikely Mourinho wouldn't have played 4-2-3-1 vs Italy though. Southgate lost the plot last night completely.

Nah, you want your best taker going first. You need a good start in a shootout to stand a chance. I just don't agree with Saka taking number 5.

1-4 were correct calls, although I’m not sure about the concept of bringing players on at the last min to take a penalty as they won’t have settled into the right mindset for penalties.

Saka was extremely questionable on such a sensitive penalty slot though.

Sometimes the best taker goes last. I prefer first also. I just see nothing wrong with best and 2nd best first and last. Saka last was dumb though.

    Fourth for me.

Not sure it matters too much though.

Eh, smash it is probably the wrong word but just like, pick a spot and strike it cleanly and there's a decent chance of scoring.

The amount of saves when a stuttered run up penalty is taken is disproportionately high and has been for years, while some of it is no doubt is pressure, it happens way too often for it to just be attributable to pressure. Though perhaps using that technique increases the amount of pressure you're putting on yourself by not having a dead cert position that you're aiming for when you start your run. Then when the keeper doesn't move, you quickly need to pick somewhere and it's much harder to get the accuracy and power needed to take a good penalty.

I called each one of our misses. You can just tell when a player is walking up to the spot that the nerves and occasion are in their head. And you can tell those that look mentally strong and confident will score. Like others have said I'm not really a fan of bringing players on with a minute to go to take penalties. Would be interested to know the stats behind how many are scored and missed, just feels like that back fires more often then not. Saka at 5 (or taking one of the 5 at all) was also clearly the wrong decision and I imagine 95% of the nation knew that when we got to number 5 and it was Saka walking forward that it was over. I don't blame the young lad, I just think we needed a bit of calmness and nous to realise that we needed a more experienced head taking the biggest pressure pen. Probably needed somone to put their arm around Saka when he put his name forward and say, you'll get your chance, but not today. That was his first professional penalty...ever.
Rashford has barely played in this tournament and when he has featured he's looked low on confidence and form. Sancho again is young, but without knowing his ability with penalties I would have backed him to score (until I saw him step up for it and you could see in his face he was going to miss). Quick word on Pickford. Brilliant from him and didn't deserve to be on the losing side, having saved 2 of the 5 you have more than done your bit.
We know penalties, we probably work on penalties more than any other country because of our history with them. And I really thought having got over our hoodoo vs Colombia with this group of players, that this new England would be different. But ultimately our mentality isn't there for them, and I'm not sure it ever will be. If we ever win an international competition again it's going to have to be in normal or extra time.

Thats a lot of ramble about penalties. But ultimately we didn't do enough in the 120 minutes. We had the players, the fitness, the crowd, but not the nous or the experience. And to fall short at that final hurdle in the way we did. It's heartbreaking.

Just an observation. Declan Rice entered the tournament as a "boy" and ended it like a classy seasoned pro. West Ham better put a massive fee on his head.

I was originally very critical of Southgate and I still feel he has some failings, but he deserves immense credit for what he has achieved.

However apparently he selected Saka at 5, a horrendous call if that is true. Grealish has come out and said he asked to be a taker but wasn’t selected (in response to senior players being criticised for letting Saka go first).

Whilst i generally agree with you, i did think he got it wrong last night. Mount should have been hooked at half time and i would have thrown Bellingham on for his energy mid way through the second half....however easy in hindsight. I always believe in going out to win a football match rather than not wanting to lose, but thats me. All in all, though tremendous credit to the team for getting to the final.

The penalty shoot out was a mess. In no world can you have kids going up instead of sterling and grealish. And bringing on players to take penalties without kicking a ball in the match is asking for trouble. That said it was a bloody good tournament for England and we have a genuine chance at the WC.
