The Superlative Stakes sees the Gosden's Dhabab favourite to build on a 6th place in the Coventry. He was a bit green that day and met with some interference in the closing stages. I felt he might have been second with a clear run but not sure he could have caught Berkshire Shadow. The Breeze Up purchase is a son of No Nay Never and he should have more to offer but the odds look too short to me in a race with unexposed rivals.

Great Max ran in the Chesham and was third behind Point Lonsdale, who is favourite for the 2000 Guineas and Derby next season. Great Max won on debut but lacked the pace to cope with the Chesham favourite and also the Queen's Reach For The Moon, staying on into 3rd a shade over 3 lengths behind. The Chesham 4th was beaten into 5th in a maiden next time and went down by a similar margin to his Chesham run and that didn't do a lot for the form.

Austrian Theory won his only start so far and the runner up Private Signal went one better next time. The Appleby horse re-opposes and only has a neck to find but he was odds-on for his Leicester maiden win and the rest of the collateral form from Austrian Theory's race looks weak. I'll pass on both colts.

Mr McCann appeals as the best of the double figure prices in the race. He upped his game when stepping up to 7F and was impressive in conceding 6 lbs to the promising Triple Time last time out. That looked a good performance and he has earned his step up in class.

Masekela was fancied in the Chesham and went off 2nd Fav but was only 5th. As mentioned above, that race hasn't panned out so far, with four unplaced efforts from four starts.

Papa Cocktail seems to be going the right way and the son of Churchill could come forward again.

I like Native Trail here, he went off odds-on on debut and justified it in good style pulling 4 lengths clear. I don't think he beat anything of note but he thumped his field and looked sure to progress from it, A son of Oasis Dream, he represents a stable who have been farming this race of late and I have had a bet on Native Trail for the 2000 Guineas at 40/1, Master Of The Seas won this last season and the exciting Quorto won it two years before that and ended his career after three races having beaten Derby winner Antony Van Dyck in good style in the National Stakes in what turned out to be his final race. A long way to go of course but 40/1 is a big price.

Dhabab is highest rated in this field but the Coventry is 0/8 in terms of wins since and a few of them ran behind Lusail in the July Stakes the other day. He seems a but short fot me at about 13/8.

3,15 Newmarket Native Trail 11/4 and 2000 Guineas 40/1 for a wee dream bet. Could be a wet dream bet of course!

    Good luck today.

The July Cup looks as good a race as it has been in a few years. Tricky looking one to solve on the face of it but I'd likley be siding with Creative Force if pushed.

I will have a browse through some of the Irish races now and see if there anything that stands out for today.

    Afternoon all,

A nice days racing to get stuck into, I reckon Will Buick could well have 4 or 5 winners at Newmarket but my main ones for today are:

    2.25 Asc SPANISH KISS
    3.00 Asc TILLSET
    4.00 Che MONBAHER
    4.25 New CREATIVE FORCE

Whilst the field for the July Cup is numerically large, quite a proportion have no realistic prospect of victory but one or two of them may get close enough to the winner to pick up some decent prize money. Of course some of them may well influence the outcome by getting in the way of the chief protagonists.

Defending the prize he won last term is Oxted, victorious in the King’s Stand Stakes last time and re-opposed by some of the 2020 vanquished. He would be making history of sorts as this has not been won back to back since before the England football team last won a trophy. Before victory on the quick ground at the Royal meeting, Oxted was third on easy ground in the Duke Of York Stakes won impressively by Starman. American raider Extravagant Kid has the services of Frankie and he has an extra furlong to reverse King’s Stand running with Oxted as he was third that day.

Rohaan comes here on a four-timer after winning the Wokingham off a mark of 112 but this is a big step up in grade and the ground will be very different. Others with form from the last day of Royal Ascot are Glen Shiel, runner-up in the Diamond Jubilee and Art Power who was third but first of the stands’ side group. Both of them like to be up the front so there should be no lack of pace.

Dragon Symbol lost the Commonwealth Cup in the stewards’ room and prior to that was beaten in the Sandy Lane at Haydock by Rohaan. The ground will be very different at HQ but Oisin Murphy has stayed loyal to him.

William Buick is back from his ban and gets the leg up on CREATIVE FORCE, who won the Jersey Stakes at Ascot and now drops back a furlong. That was his fourth win of the year and he still looks to be on the upgrade. I think he can find the few pounds of improvement needed today. The one I am most worried about is progressive Starman as the only blot on his record was on soft ground.

Surely somebody in the Mulrennan household can give us an idea of Surrey Pride’s chances in the John Smith’s Cup on ITV Racing. The bad news is the draw.

The Bunbury Cup is a proper cavalry charge over seven furlongs, so will it be handicap debutant Fundamental after finishing fifth in the Jersey, Perotto on a hat-trick after winning the Britannia or Ametist, chasing a four timer after winning over course and distance last time?

Yes it is a good days racing but there is too much of it!
would prefer the July Festival to go back to its midweek slot or maybe put the York fixture on next week instead ??

Druid's Altar 5/2 - Limerick 2.30 on paper this horse hardly stands out as a chaser but he ran a really nice second on his chase debut behind a good ridden Henry DeBromhead winner. Paired back with JJ Slevin today instead of a claimer, I think he could prove hard to beat, he has some very useful hurdle from in the book and seldom runs a bad race, winning 3 times and placing 5 from 14 runs. Turnpike Trip looked to have the race at his mercy in Wexford lto before falling, that was a weaker event than this though and he could end up setting this up for Druid's Altar to take him towards the end of the race if he decides to lead again. I would be wary if there I strong support for the DeBromhead newcomer at the bottom, but other than that I'd be confident enough that Druid's Altar should have there measure allowing a clear run.

Joseph has another then at 3.40 in Global Equity who is short enough at 7/4 now but she was pretty unlucky when making a bad blunder at the last when challenging the promising Gauloise, who ended up running out a 10 length winner. She is stepped markedly up in trip today and it should allow her to get into a better jumping rhythm. This looks a pretty soft mares beginners chase and again I'd be disappointed I'd Global Equity doesn't oblige.

Single on Druid's Altar and the double with Global Equity.

Pretty emphatic again from Gin On Lime. She has plenty of pace. She will face stiffer competition ahead but I still think a drop back to the 2 mile division with those front running tactics could win her some valuable pots. They will have fun with her anyway as Henry seems to see her as a versatile sort, which gives them options.

The July Cup is a cracking renewal where several have legitimate claims. There are several big improvers in the line up and Starman is still relatively unexposed. Oxted has been here and done it before and he got back to winning form last time. Prior to that he hadn't been so good this year and he faces faster ground here today.

So where does the money land today?

I have been with Starman from early on and other than drowning in the mud of the Champion Sprint, he hasn't let me down. He had Oxted well behind when winning the Duke Of York and the faster ground may suit him better than the Good To Soft at York last time. Only having a neck in hand over Nahaarr is my slight concern and I feel he needs to improve on that to play a part here.

Creative Force is one of the improvers in the field and he made it four in a row in good style last time. That was over 7F and while he has won at 6F it was at a lower level and I prefer a horse to have proven itself at a similar level over the trip they are tackling now.

Rohaan has been the rags to riches story of the season, rising from a rating of 55 to 116. That 61 lbs rise is more than four stones of improvement but he must be close to a plateau now that he is nearing 120.

Dragon Symbol is another to keep churning out personal bests and he too has reached 116 now. He was disqualified into second place after narrowly beating Campanelle in the Commonwealth Cup last time, with the pair five lengths clear of the remainder. He was quite gritty that day on the heavy ground and had also only gone down a nose to Rohaan on heavy the time before. He had pretty much hosed up in his other races, three on the all weather and one on good to firm at Hamilton.

Method and Supremacy were both decent last year and are trying to get back on track but it is hard to be confident with them in such a tough race.

Conclusion:- I am reluctant to desert Starman but my suspicion is that Dragon Symbol is the one to beat today. On a sound surface I feel he can reverse form with Rohaan and land this prize. He could well have been coming here unbeaten with a shade of luck and he looks sure to be involved. I will reverse forecast him with Starman, as I believe they are the two with most scope for further improvement. As an outside shot I did big field horse Summerghand at 50/1 with six places for each-way. He could just outrun those odds and nick a place.

    4.25 Newmarket Dragon Symbol 5/1

    Dragon Symbol/Starman RF

    Summerghand 50/1 EW (Six places)
