At Pontefract the 3.35 race is a decent quality sprint. Hey Jonesy is top weight, rated 100 and he ran well in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot when 6th of the 21 field. He has only won twice in 27 career starts and has only landed one race in the last four years. Still a pound higher than his last win, he looks a risky win proposition. None of today's field arrive in winning form and I narrowed it down to two. Mondammej was runner up last time but was over two lengths behind the winner. I like that he has won at the track before and at Newcastle last time the winner seemed to enjoy being on his own on the rail and he surged away to score well. Mondammej finished strongly on the other side to take second and he never really was in a position to catch the winner, having been held up. I would argue that he seems better at 6F than 5F, yet he has only raced three times at the longer trip. He was a winner, a second, and beaten a head in a match race in his three tries at 6F and his latest run suggested an extra furlong would have helped that day. Up just 1 lb, I reckon he looks sure to run well. Corinthia Knight has had three thirds this season and ran well when only beaten a head and a neck here last time. He is a lot more exposed than the selection but is just a pound up for what amounted to a half length away from a win last time. He looks likely to run his race and with the odds of the two horses I felt a reverse forecast had to be left out and have done a straight forecast along with the win single. 3.35 Pontefract Mondammej 4/1 Mondammej/Corinthia Knight SF Good luck to anyone playing today.
Wolverhampton 1.00 Viola Park CD winner who is 3lb below last winning mark and has a very good draw (1) for a prominent racer. Jockey Trevor Whelan has been in the first three places 5 times from 7 rides for Trainer Ron Harris which looks really good for each way purposes. Stable amongst the winners recently.
Uttoxeter 5.45 Gaia Vallis Respectable efforts in chases since returning from a wind surgery in march (landing a Fontwell handicap chase). Not so good over hurdles but earned minor money in several runs over fences after that win. Best results for the horse under todays rider Brendan Powell. David Bridgewater has a good each way record in handicap chases at Uttoxeter over the last 5 seasons runs 17 wins 4 places 5 PL 28.50
Here's to the next 5,000... Now we have got that out of the way a bit of housekeeping. Pym this morning has been dropped 4 lbs by the old handicapper. Another run, or two, like his opener for new connections, and suddenly he will be an extremely well handicapped horse. Nudge, nudge and all that... Also on the subject of new ratings, Mr Charlton's Withhold has been dropped to 105. Will this pave the way for the old boy to return to handicaps??? Makes you wonder... All the best today, team.
With Mondammej a NR, just a single on Corinthia Knight instead. 3.35 Pontefract Corinthia Knight 4/1 Money for Golden Apollo but he's only won once since August 2017, so not one I would have as favourite.
Looking ahead to the weekend, if I may, I see that the much discussed Frankel 5YO, Home Fire, may make his hurdling bow 'ooooooooooooooooop' at Perth.
I wasn't going to bet in the 3.00 Pontefract but Agincourt looks too big at 6/1 now. The O'Meara horse has a profile that could be doing with more wins in it but she has been very highly tried at times. Only 8th last time but that was in a Group 2 at Royal Ascot and she drops to Listed class today. Lights On steps up from Handicap class but was a shade disappointing last time and along with Waliyak seemed short enough in the betting. The pair have 7 and 8 pounds respectively to find on official ratings and yet they are around a third of the odds of Agincourt. 3.00 Pontefract Agincourt 6/1
Oh well, got the favourite beat but the Stoute filly was totally different gravy to these today. Lights On had looked progressive prior to an 8th place effort last time but seemed to relish conditions today in storming home. Only 9/4 when I placed my bet, she ended up 3/1. Waliyak never looked like winning it.
Corinthia Knight wins and defies a massive drift. Returned 17/2. I'll take that thank you. Some funds for the Newmarket July meeting. I thought he was beat because he came under pressure early enough but Hollie Doyle took him across the track and my hope was that when the camera angle levelled up he would be in front, and, for once, he was!
Oh believe me, I get losing runs just like everybody does. You will probably see that over the course of the Newmarket July meeting. Thanks.
I've done a little spread bet on David Probert at Brighton this evening. Haven't done one in a while so thought i'd have a go. He has 6 rides and i've bought him at 28.5. If i'm been honest both Saffie Osborne and Cieran Fallon caught my eye with the rides they have this evening but looked a bit pricey on the spread at 48 and 52. Probert looked better value and in theory i only need a winner and a 3rd for a profit although i hope for better.
