  1. We got our first telly in about 1960 I think.
I was one of four and after our tea we had to sit in the front room waiting for me Dad to come in from work to switch it on!
First programme I remember watching was Rawhide.....Gil Favor and Rowdy Yates.....brilliant! <laugh>

they ran out of ideas...now they are in fear of upsetting some minority.

as a country we used to enjoy a good laugh, we laughed at anyone and few, if any, ever complained but would join in...we knew how to make fun of ourselves, a lot of television became 'ground breaking' stuff, we saw places in the world we could never dream of visiting, we saw cultures we struggled to understand, now it is all about saving the planet and showing how so much has changed but all people are bothered about is making sure they can grab the latest gadget with no thought of how it came about.

We have been slowly brainwashed into accepting mediocrity for a number of years now. Its gone past accepting and is now at the revelling stage. Its not just the media. Look at places like Wetherspoons for example. Many have come to think that a meal and a drink and Wetherspoons is great and well worth the money. When I was a child a pub meal was something quite special, not the one step up from fast food that places like Wetherspoons **** out. Chip shops, takeaways, service industry, censorship, workmanship, quality in general. We are zombies shuffling between the bland, the boring and the grey, being told what to enjoy and having to accept it.

I fully agree about reality TV mind. Absolute trash, and then folk aspire to be like these whoppas.

That said, the good TV now is sensational, your shows on Sky Atlantic etc that are as deep as feature films etc, there’s plenty of options not to watch the dross.

I was chatting to Maria who was voted off on the first live show of an early X factor (it was about 3rd season I think).

she was opening a newly upgraded supermarket in Lincolnshire (I was holidaying over there). There were hundreds of people there to see her. I had no idea who she was! Neither did loads of others who were simply there to go shopping! But she was signing autographs etc.

I asked how much she’d made from the show, she said she was getting paid in excess of £20k to cut a ribbon after her agents fees and tax. She’d made in excess of a quarter of a million in 3 months after X factor and was booked to do loads more. She said she understood she was a sell out but she wouldn’t change a thing. Ex club singer and front woman of a decent holiday park band (strangely I’d heard of them but not her!!)

she told me to go for it but I never have. I know I’m a better and more rounded vocalist than most on there. You get the odd very good one, but people pay a fortune for crap! Those who get embarrassed etc on stage. It becomes being paid to be bullied!

I’d love to make loads of money from my singing. Would be a dream, but not through that method!

(edit… totally agree on your second point too! Some great shows on now)

My son is a musician who's played with some good bands, performed at Glastonbury, Bearded Festival, etc and sings. Unlike me he's a tall good looking man in good shape. He's had loads of people from friends to fans pushing him to go on these TV talent shows ... he'd rather work on the bins.

I admire his integrity, something most people will happily sell.

I hate them. But they all but destroyed the ability to be “discovered” playing a pub or club somewhere. I have a record company and a couple of released songs but not made a penny from original music. Sadly made a lot more doing covers!

Good on your son for that. Obviously he’s a lot like me (well, except for the good looks and in shape bit)!!!

Being slowly brainwashed. Being told what to enjoy and accept.
I’ve been thinking about this recently. We are a nation it seems that if the govt say you need to lockdown , you need to vaccinate ( or anything else) - for your own benefit — it’s all no no no we won’t be controlled , we won’t be cajoled. Yet if Macdonalds et al , major corporations who want profit above our well being , the internet etc push potential harm our way , it’s yes no problem how much can we have

Quite right mate. I refuse to go to these 'everything with chips' places. Went to The Stables at Herrington last Saturday and to my delight they had Panacalty on the menu and Roast Dinners with vegetables. It was wonderful - a bit of imagination instead of the usual bland pub meals.

As Smug says I want to see "talent" on tv. People who can do things that I can't. Is the logical progression of all this ****e to have "reality" football games where people who can't play football have people paying to watch their pathetic attempts at the beautiful game. Oh sorry, we had that under Simon Grayson and Chris Coleman. <laugh>
