I think Dion has more upside, but I think you're right when we can't afford to be splashing out 1m on a gamble. If it drops to 500k + add-ons then that would be more reasonable and likely.
It's unfortunate we can't take both. They'd be a step up on current options. In a non-covid market, Charles is easily a £1m player, but covid has changed everything. I wonder how many clubs can even get close to £1m and it's not like Accrington can refuse to sell. They have to sell or they'll get nothing. I can't see them doing that, they're very well run by Andy Holt and it's an awful lot of money to them. I'm sure Charles will be keen to move on too, he'll probably triple his wages, if not more. It's a big opportunity for him too
Yes, Marriott, Charles and Magennis as our three striker options, with Eaves and Scott moving the other way, would be my preference but I know that's a pipe dream.
If we can get Marriott or Charles along with the signing we have made so far, that is a pretty good start in this window. We need a good right-sided centre back, and then probably one or two loans from EPL sides to bolster the numbers. I guess Slater is on hold until the Blunt decide on his future there, or has that ship sailed already I wonder?
How did that happen? Not too long ago he was a bright young thing brought in to try to fill Chris Chilton's boots. He made a pretty good stab at it too. Happy Birthday Stu!
I know there are still a fair few crazy clubs out there, but someone like Marriott who has barely scored for a few years is going to really struggle to find a club unless he wakes up to the reality of being an out of contract footballer!
Hopefully he has a good agent who will have realistic expectations around contract offers, I don't see Championship clubs queueing up to offer him to £10k+ per week wages and a large signing on fee.
Completely agree. He's not done anything for 2 years and there's plenty of other good frees. There's Pigott & Wyke from L1, then there's Diedhou, Waghorn etc. There's a fair few options out there for Championship clubs
Was always going to be an issue with wages of c£30k+ per week at Derby being quoted on their forums. However, whatever we are offering is more than he will be on come 30 June unless he finds another club willing to cough up in the meantime. I would have thought a key to any deal would be the signing on fee he may get in addition to his reduced wages. Football in general is heading for a reality check outside the top 3-4 clubs funded by their mega-rich owners. Hope we can get this deal done, might have to hold on to my socks!
