It's another sensible signing. You don't get many 25 year olds on frees usually. Honeyman made the most tackles of anyone in L1, Doc's in the top 10 too. Cannon matches Honeyman, he just played less minutes. It's crazy numbers! We needed somebody to back-up as a box-to-box midfielder, we didn't have that last year and we got very lucky with injuries. It's another signing that screams that we know exactly what type of player we want and that we're in control
I'm assuming the Moncur and Cannon signings are alternatives to Crowley and Slater. Don't know much about Cannon though, is he more defensive or attacking? All I could find was this:
Think he's more box-to-box than a deeper one. Seems to be a replacement for Flores. Can't see us moving on from Slater yet, we just know we have to wait a few weeks to get him.
Sounds like a reasonable signing, on the occasions I've seen him play, he usually does well, so on a free can't be a bad signing. Like others have said, maybe that puts a big question mark over Slater's situation. But it is the right thing to do, get a signing in early, because if you wait and the Blunts decide to keep him, then you are left running around looking for a replacement.
Don't know much about him but from what's been said by McCann about his attributes I'd see Cannon as Docherty's backup with Moncur as Honeyman's. That still leaves Slater to sign, but I wonder if Smallwood would then leave so we'd need a back up for Slater assuming Jones is seen as the starting right-side CB.
Bristol City are closing in on the double signing of Andy King and Matty James on free transfers. Alright lads, it's Nige, I'm putting the band back together...
Yes, that's how I saw it - the position in which Slater did so well was more as a CDM, not box to box as this lad sounds. It does raise the question of where Jordan Flores fits in, if at all?
Alternatively, Moncur could be a winger who could play in either Wilks or Lewis-Potter's position, so he might be an alternative to Gavin Whyte (haven't heard much about us signing him permanently). I swear I saw an article comparing his style of play to Grealish, as opposed to being a playmaker like Honeyman.
Young midfielder Callum Jones has joined League One newcomers Morecambe on a season-long loan. The 20-year-old, who signed a new contract with Hull City in January, broke into the first team at the start of last season and has made seven appearances in all competitions. The Wales youth international scored his first career goal in the Tigers’ 2-0 Papa John’s Trophy victory at Harrogate, a match in which he also captained the side. The youngster will be hoping to gain further experience with the newly-promoted Shrimps, who are set to embark on their first League One campaign under recently-appointed boss Stephen Robinson. Head Coach Grant McCann said: “It was important for Callum’s development that we tried to get him some game time. We think highly of him and believe he has a serious future at this football club. “He signed a new deal in January and Stephen Robinson is someone I know. When he spoke to me about Callum, it was a no brainer. “The way Stephen likes him teams to play, and the way Callum is as a person, I think it’s the perfect fit. It’s League One, it’s a good standard for Callum and hopefully it’ll make him ready for when he comes back to us.” The Club would like to wish Callum the very best of luck for his time at the Mazuma Stadium.
Marriott would be a pretty good signing imo. McCann signed him for Peterborough so it seems like a player he'd be after. Local lad from Bev as well.
Luton have signed a cracking player called Allan Campbell from Motherwell. He's the defensive midfield equivalent of Docherty. Great engine. Motherwell fans call him the 'Scottish Kanté'. I would've loved for us to sign him. He would've been the perfect partner next to Docherty in a 4-2-3-1.
McCann “There's an attacking player potentially coming in over the next couple of days. He's having a medical today. It's someone we've chased for over a year".
