Having worked in a lot of towns and cities in England and Wales, I can say, Hessle road is a bit ****. But, to say that you've "...never seen such a single decrepit run down road anywhere and that includes all the ‘ notorious’ areas of this country’s city’s..." shows that you've never really been anywhere! I will say there are without a doubt, far ****tier areas in Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, London to name but a few. In fact, I would feel far safer walking at night down Hessle Road than spending 20 mins in the likes of Harehills, Chapeltown, Gipton, Harpurhey, Moston, Ardwick, Longsight, Kelham Island, Parsons Cross, Sparkhill, Sparkbrook, Lozells, Croyden, Newham or Southwark at kicking out time. Check those places out for decrepit areas before slagging off Hulls.
I've always felt quite safe walking down Hessle Road at night, because there's hardly anyone there! Mind you, I'd think twice before popping into Criterion for a pint...
If you read my post properly I’ve based it on my travels and like you have been numerous places for n my work and yes there are rough areas , rough short streets but not ive not seen such a major inner city road with so much industry and other industrial retail nearby in such a star have a look up at the condition of the buildings they are crumbling . It is not a slagging off it’s an observation based on my desire for us to do what should be done to make this city more attractive . If you properly read my message you will see how much this city means to me ! Yet again people pick out what they want and don’t seem to absorb the whole context of my message ffs
Who should I blame for knocking rows and rows of houses down on compulsory purchase orders and moving all the people to massive council estates on the edge of town ? That decision decimated the roads the thread is about. As for the huge rock bottom discount stores. How many do you see in York City centre ? Why has Hull got the biggest Tesco in the North of England selling everything under the sun in the city centre, who passed that ? Who did away with the outdoor market which in effect finished off Whitefriargate ? Who decided to cut the city centre in half with Castle Street instead of building the road on stilts thus making Princes Dock redundant ? Who demolished half of the old town ? Who opposed Francis Daly at every turn....?
Hull City Council have absolutely no control over where most of those stores open, landlords let their shops to any retailer they like, HCC have zero involvement. I agree with you about the race to the bottom, you're just blaming someone who's playing little part in that race. They weren't responsible for the building of the A63 either, nor are they responsible for its current major works. It absolutely should have been raised over the dock entrance and Princes Dock should have been a Marina, but I assume the government wouldn't cough for the extra cost. Just in the name of accuracy, Tesco's in St Stephens is not the biggest in the North of England.
Can we blame the council for St Stephens? a lot of problems stem from that although we did get a new bus station out of the deal.
I used to know some Hull architecture students and the recurrent project was how to solve the Castle Street problem, the solution trended to be a tunnel - that hopefully didn't flood like the Kingswood one As noted above it was Highways England that wouldn't fess up the monies...
Urika doesn’t like it when “the Council” removes retail from the city centre (Whitefriargate) and doesn’t like when they put it back in either (St Stephens). It’s almost as though he hasn’t really thought it through. Independent shops on Hessle Road closed down because they sold things that people didn’t want to buy anymore and prices they didn’t want to pay anymore. Which is probably Terry Geraghty’s fault, granted.
The cost of building and then pumping a tunnel at Castle Street was astronomical. That’s why it never happened.
I doubt there has been a long term strategy but if the A63 had been built high over the dock in a 70's/80's brutalist style it would look monstrous now and I prefer how Castle Street is going to end up with a very nice footbridge finally linking town and giving us great views. The quaysides and old town are actually more pleasant now than they have been for years, you just have to use it more for leisure than for shopping.
Yeah what does an independent retailer with decades of experience in Hull know? More pubsec chin-strokers needed.
Perhaps Hessle Rd needs more 'street art'? Seems to be all the rage in Hull these days where kids do colourful blobby squiggles of their 'tag'. or abstract drug-addled half-realised pix. If it's 'art', put it on canvas and sell it for big bucks.. If it's just self-indulgent losers' squiggles, please stop defacing public spaces, it makes everywhere look a ****hole
