Tbph I've been thinking about giving up driving for a few years now, especially as I don't enjoy it anymore. So time all this comes in I'll either have given up driving or be in the boneyard with you. As for the jet packs, there's absolutely no way, anyone is ever going to let me near one of them. <laugh>

One of the houses which I recently bought, done up and sold was a 1930’s 3 bedroom bay fronted terrace. I did considered putting a drop curb in and turning the front garden into off road parking, as it would have been useful for the skips I had and then a selling feature. Unfortunately, one of only 4 street lamps for the road was apparently too close to get permission for the dropped curb.
A long winded story to say that out of a road with 100+ houses it has 4 street lights.

Yeah it’s limited, some areas it’ll be of more use than others, it’s also limited to relatively slow charge, a max of circa 7KW iirc. The pilot schemes have been virtually exclusively in London.

By the time the infrastructure obstacles are over largely overcome the entire model of car ownership and personal car usage in major cities is liable to completely change anyway, with the arrival of autonomous vehicles.

Need a car to leave the city for the day or a trip away, just press a few buttons on an app, and book a motor to turn up when you want it and for it to take you wherever you need to go for whatever length of time, paid by mileage / time units. All dispatched from some brownfield or underground storage facility. Head **** stuff.

I wonder which company will be the first to offer EV charging as part of the employment package?

From a personal pov although technically i'm exactly the type of driver who should be using an electric car , most journeys less than 10 miles , auto driver ,have offload parking for at least 3 cars i haven't seriously considered it . The main reasons being my 11 year old Polo is happily tootling around still but the clincher is the extra height off the griund they all seem to have to fit the batteries in car "floor" . That extra height would make putting my chair in the car more difficult and possibly more much more difficult .

I do a lot of inner city driving, so slow speeds etc. Hybrid is perfect for me. Great to drive electric, but nice peace of mind knowing that you have a tank of petrol to fall back on.
Costs me about £1.50 to fully charge, and I get about 40 miles out of it.

Will we still be able to sell new Hybrids after 2030?

If so that would solve all the problems I spoke about.

I think they are banned from 2030.
I’m hoping that by that time, the infrastructure will have improved.
As an aside, I’m going to Center Parcs in a few weeks. No EV charge points at all! I was really surprised at this. I thought they would have been on board with ‘going green’.
Reckon I’ll flick onto sport mode and mow some squirrels down <laugh>
    That’ll teach em.

Why are there thousands of bobble heads marching in London about Lockdown?

They’ve literally got there by fully open public transport, walked past open pubs, restaurants, shops and cinemas to march about ending lockdown? It’s like they enjoyed being ‘freedom warriors’ and don’t want it to end.

    Set of absolute ****s.

Yeah travelling to central London for a walk about in the sun and left to their own devices, whilst shouting about being locked down and having their freedoms stolen.

I already answered most of that.

84% of drivers have off street parking. The rest will have to fill up as they do now when passing a charging point, when they're doing their weekly shop or just not get an electric car.

I don't agree with that figure, because I believe it includes people who don't have vehicles, so that could be the elderly in residential homes/flats (as an example), where there is off street parking for a limited number of vehicles, so it inflates the figure per household. I believe the reality to be 24%-25% of househoulds do not have off street parking, that equates to over 6.5 million vehicles. Throwing a different light on to the reality.

As you state or don't get a vehicle, which is the government aim, and an I'm alright Jack mentality.

Also a lot of househoulds have two vehicles, the second vehicle being fully entitled to park on the street, but could be taking up a charging point on the street, rather than needing it, but just so they can park. Preventing a vehicle that does need charging from using it. I bet this point has not even been considered in the planning.

The streets are going to look awful with charging points littered everywhere.
