I'm hoping Boardman ( Chester, 2.40 ) can grab the hat-trick and hand me a nice 51st Birthday present. Also liking Carlos Felix in the 3.50 and Toro Strike in the 3.30 at Haydock. Good luck to all on a day of Northern racing.

Was going to make my case for Sir Min last night after selecting him at 9/1 but was too tired to write it up. Get up this morning and he's blue across the board and halved in price. I picked the race because I felt the Hannon horse was short enough at a shade of odds-on in a race where there were some opponents with promise. Watching Sir Min's debut the son of Caravaggio was slowly away and had to be chased along to try to close. He seemed to have a hopeless task but kept on for pressure and was really only getting going in the final furlong. To give the horse his due he made good headway and was closing on the front three as they hit the line. He looked a natural for a stiffer track or an extra furlong. He stays at Chester but does get the extra furlong. He was green last time but if he has more nous now he should run well from stall 4 with the 1st three in the betting last night being in stalls 1-2-3. I saw him as a fair play each-way last night at 9/1 but now he is 9/2 I don't feel he is really an each-way price. The way I bet these is generally win only, so I backed him that way last night. The double stake cost with each-way bets always rankles with me. 4.25 Chester Sir Min Perhaps he may drift back out as the race nears. Good luck today everybody.

The John Of Gaunt is pretty open but for me Safe Voyage fits the bill in enough categories to be the selection. We have to ignore a lousy effort last time though. Pitched in deep in the Lockinge against hot favourite Palace Pier, it seemed a harsh ask on seasonal debut over the mile trip. 7F is fairly clearly Safe Voyage's bag and he drops back to Group 3 company today. Safe Voyage is 4 from 5 at Haydock and the only time he didn't win he was a neck second to the talented Space Blues. The ground should not be a problem and this race was likely his main early season target, with the Lockinge perhaps a speculative hope of a place at best behind the Gosden kingpin. Hard to see Safe Voyage not going close today. The betting suggests Toro Strike, Glorious Journey and With Thanks are the main dangers. Glorious Journey is very capable on his day but he's been a horse I've never been able to catch right. Trip and ground are fine for him but he's never run at Haydock before and I just feel he is a shade less appealing today. Toro Strike looks a dodgy favourite to me. His official rating is a shade lower than the best and although he won well last time it was a minor event at Thirsk and the ground was good to firm. He needs to find something with Safe Voyage on their runs in the Prix Foret where Safe Voyage was only beaten a neck and a short head in third place in that Group 1 contest. With Thanks has a good profile for William Haggas and conditions will be fine for her. She does lack a run this season though and sometimes these 4YO fillies do not pan out as well as they did at 3YO. You could see the logic in picking her but I would be a little concerned in a tough enough starting point to her season. Kinross is prominent enough in the betting considering his profile. Once favourite for the 2000 Guineas, he lost his way and has since been plying his trade in Meydan. Drops back in trip now but I think he has plenty to prove and looks poor value at 6/1. River Nymph is improving but needs another step up here. 3.30 Haydock Safe Voyage 5/1 I have also done a rev forecast with Glorious Journey.
