Yeah but they all have insurance (Willis). He could have stayed with Coventry and made it in the Championship but felt that Sunderland are a bigger club and probably on better wages. We will eventually get promoted. Now I know I'm biased but if a new young owner came in with massive plans for the club and they wanted to tie me down on a new deal, I'd bite their hand off. Stuff going on recently and just latest would be giving me a great incentive, such as the lighting and the new pitch installation, small things to a big picture.

No better pairing than Sanderson and O/9 at the club for a long time imo.

Maguire is 32 and past it.
Definitely not one for the future.
    Thanks for the memories.

Johnson managed us to a cup win. Maguire played in each Wembley failing and the final game of our play off hopes.

he’s a good player on his day. Which is 3 or 4 times a season. What exactly has he “done” for this club?

I see both sides of this. Playing fir a massive club in the third division or playing (with all due respect) for a small club in the championship. Rock meet hard place!

It’s obvious now we are going down the statistics route for our new players and I would suspect we probably haven’t heard of 75% of them but being old fashioned nothing will fill our ground quicker than bringing somebody like Defoe in as a striker to immediately lift the place and get the fans rocking. Nothing exciting about 10 or 11 players you know nowt about.

Unless of course those 10 or 11 unknowns gel into a decent team

Brainman thinks 32 year old Maguire is past it, yet you think 39 this year Defoe is a good idea.
I think 1of you is way out.

That’s true but that could be 10+ games in, the ground would be buzzing from day one if you got somebody like Defoe in. Like I said I’m old fashioned <ok>

I can see the logic behind your suggestion and it has merit, but what happens if Defoe gets a season ending injury in the first game?
    Just playing devils advocate :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Hopefully we get our signings early and we can see obvious improvement through the pre season leading to an air of excitement for our opening game

not read all through here so apologies if i repeat anything...

we need a solid defensive line with solid back-ups before anything else...we saw early in the season how teams struggled to score against us but as the season wore on with more injuries and square pegs, i noticed teams taking us on more as they knew they had a far better chance of scoring, please, no more midfield/wingers etc in defence.

midfield was another minefield, dobson showed he had an eye for a pass and what could be a decent work rate but either lack of experience or an over enthusiastic approach held him back, onien much the same till he calmed himself down but then he got thrown into defence, would have liked to see at least dan niel getting more time, could these lads grow to be our 'engine room' is the question but i would still like to see the club get a couple of tried and tested 'generals' in there.

front line, i have said enough on wyke and think he will leave, boro can most likely offer him more than us right now...seen enough of stewart to know he is more of an all round forward than wyke will ever be and would be happy enough to keep him but at least add some nippy little bugger who can turn defenders inside out.

seems LJ may well prefer a wing back system and i think both hume and diamond excel in that type of line up with a midfielder dropping back to help defence, in gooch we have a player who constantly tries something different, he takes men on, he will go for first time cross, he will run at defenders which inevitably is going to result in him losing the ball more times than enough and many fans do not like this, as long as it is up the pitch these runs/tricks/dribbles have also created a few goals and he has a decent shot on him but needs to be out on the wing, at the minute i think he gets the nod ahead of diamond although we need to add at least one left side and one right side winger/wing back as cover...other than that i think the U23's can provide plenty of cover and hopefully pre-season gives them the chance to stand out.

Totaly different scenarios. Defoe would be a talisman, a consumate professional who has kept himself fit and is also a top finisher.
Maguire is unfit and lazy and seems to think he’s a lot better than he is, as do some fans. The King. My arse!
Defoe would be great in League One as an impact sub.
    Maguire will drift into obscurity.

I agree with most of that except the part where you think we’ll have strikers better than Defoe so he is the impact player, I can’t wait now to see who our strikers are going to be<ok>

I was thinking that Defoe wouldn’t last 90 minutes and so would be best used as impact. He would definitely be the best finisher in the club. BHH.

Sandersons pace made all the difference. He's the blue print for the kind of player we should be looking at.
Our season collapsed when he got injured and Wright was brought back in before he was fit.
The team that ended the season was slow and predictable. Need an injection of pace and energy from front to back.

everyone makes mistakes, my only problem is not coming for crosses, like the goal that Lincoln scored. I guess the GK and defence have some sort of agreement on that? IDK, perhaps it's part of the coaching philosophy. On balance I think he's had a good season.
