We wouldn't have been able to make up a full squad without including the players that have been released, if you take out the injured players, the players on loan elsewhere, and the players involved with the u23s.
He is the current England u21 keeper I think. For that alone, they will probably want at least 10m these days.
Not sure on Patterson as I have seen next to nothing of him. Burge was, according to some neutrals, the best league one keeper in the season just gone. Got to remember we only see them for the odd game. Much like opposition fans who watched Burge make saves against them probably can’t believe the vitriol he gets. not seen a keeper command his box, stop shots and distribute the ball well against us. One if the 3 yes. Very occasionally 2 of the 3. But I can’t remember any with all the attributes we want/need. From what I have read/heard, Patterson is capable of all 3. Not sure how capable he’d be with a different back line in front of him 80% of the games!
As far as Burge is concerned we have a league 1 quality keeper. The majority of keepers in league one have probably made the same saves as him, made the same no. of cock ups as home etc etc. I have no problem getting rid of him, but who would we replace him with? A league one standard keeper no doubt.
Ramsdale from Sheff Utd has been first choice for the U21s. Not sure if this guy was in the squad for the last tournament though?
I think he's only played once. Made his debut in November. Apparently, his grandfather was one of the first members of the Czech Army to arrive when Kiev was liberated.
It's a massive summer for this club. We need to get it right,so we're not desperately looking for players in January, like we have been. If the 3 who have been offered contracts (plus Wyke) decide to move on, the size of the task of assembling a full squad will be gargantuan. Willis being injured for a good chunk chunk of the season doesn't help either. Speakman will have to earn his corn, that's for sure.
If we can get a big and confident keeper in that'll do me, good distribution would be a bonus but less essential imo. I think pretty much any professional keeper is a competent shot stopper so I'd expect that to be a given. I don't think it's a lot to ask, especially not with the back room setup we've got. Size and shot stopping should be easy to find then all I'm asking for on top of that is confidence.
tbh I think speakman knew this, hence he talked about proper planning depending on which league they were in. That new recruitment guy has a job on but for once it looks like we might have proper infrastructure in place to get players identified and into the club early. Far too often it’s been left to the last minute, hence we keep buying ****e.
Out of the January signings they were all poor overall, we seen the odd glimpse of what Jones could do but Maguire could produce similar. Winchester got slated at the time and I said give him till the end of the season which I have, he is not an improvement on what we already had / have, I would get rid of him as well. We need youth, speed & energy, make Sanderson a priority at least another years loan if Wolves will let him. For years our midfield has been filled with slow ponderous midfielders, we seem to keep signing like for like midfielders every season. Going to be an interesting pre-season, the central midfield is going to be totally refreshed so things can only get better.
Streaky Lee’s treatment of Maguire has been nothing short of disgusting. Maguire has done more for this club than Johnson is ever likely to.
Can see O'Nien going to Luton. They're his local club and he deserves a shot at the championship. He's 26/27 now and I don't think we could begrudge him the chance to move home and play higher up.
However he has a bairn, his lass is from up here and as we all know it's the women that make the decisions. I've heard he loves it up here and really wants to stay, but we'll just have to wait and see
Do you select a player who is clearly past his best and unable to fit into the team's shape just because he's a decent guy, or has played well in the past?
I like Maguire but the fact is he is one of a nucleus of players that have consistently failed to get us promoted over the last 3 seasons, he will go down in the clubs history as part of the worst teams we have ever had in our history. Johnson has had 6 months, Covid and a takeover to contend with. I am not his greatest fan but looking at it with common sense tells you he must be given a chance, we have proven the managerial chopping and changing also fails.
Disagree. If he knows what's going on behind the scenes at Sunderland and KLD's big picture, why would he want to move from the biggest club he'll ever play for and go to Luton (No Offence Hatters).
I wish I could agree, and I 100% understand. And clearly we are much bigger club that Luton. But he deserves championship football. Staying here in case we manage it next season is a risk for him. Careers are short - look at Jordan Willis.
