Precisely this. The 'Can't defend' narrative is driven by the media and rival fans. No one is saying he is the best defensively but he's by no means poor or considered a liability. This is a lad who plays in a high risk / high line defence and is responsible for covering large spaces. LFC defence (prior to this year) has been one of the best across Europe for 2 years. Trent has had numerous quality games against the best opposition but you won't hear about it because it doesn't fit the narrative. At the end of the day, you have a right back who is solid defensive but absolutely ELITE going forward. Why the hell would you not try to build around such a player? Even if Trent was a liability, you would still want him in the team because he's a match winner. His assists and expected assists are up there with the best attackers in world football!
And again, the narrative around AWB is that he's some excellent defender. The truth is, he's not. He's an elite tackler but that is literally one small part of defending. His positioning, reading of the game, attacking are all so so average. Put it this way - Trent's defending is levels above AWB's attacking.
Which doesn't concern me, I'd as soon he doesn't go. This is more a reflection of Southgate picking four more or less the same right backs. That's the odd thing. AWB is a more conventional defender than TAA, who is a more modern right back. As are Walker and Tripper and James.

This is the point I'm making. Southgate is useless but he SHOULD be playing to the strengths of our best players. Trent is one of the few world class players in the squad, along with Kane and Sterling.

They're hardly meaningless. What is meaningless if picking single incidents in single matches to paint a false picture of the player - which is what happens to Trent all the time. Every player makes mistakes, including VVD but when Trent does it, it's amplified.
You said he can't defend. I put up some numbers to show you he's actually better defensively that all those picked. I dont watch much of the others like you don't watch trent so Yeh it's what I've got to work with.
