Hello, team. Hope everyone A-OK. Quality racing tomorrow as we have Classic action, decent Group / Listed heats and ultra competitive handicaps. Good, good, say I. I put POSTILEO up prior to him finishing runner-up in the ‘Chester Plate’ and do you know what I’ll do so again as he heads to Haydock Park (2.25) tomorrow. Things didn’t go smoothly for Postileo at Chester at all (slowly away, badly hampered in the early stages, troubled passage, had to run wide) and it was to his credit he still managed to finish 2nd that day. Granted normal luck at Haydock Park I really would expect Postileo to win as, the son of Galileo, looks a stayer of great promise. The old boy meets his Chester conqueror on 7lbs better terms and this weight concession combined with, hopefully, better luck in running should ensure that he reverses placings. Re the rest of his opponents I’d be disappointed if any proved capable of troubling Postileo. Current quotes of 7/2 appear, in my view, more than fair. Good luck all.

Is Ryan on the right one today? The punters seem to say no, with Van Gogh being backed and Wembley easy to back. Mac Swiney and Van Gogh have the soft ground form but both were a bit disappointing last time. Lucky Vega ran a belter in the Guineas and opened favourite for this but he seems to have been drifting with the ground getting very soft. La Barrosa has been backed but looks held by Van Gogh on their heavy ground form. Poetic Flare is coming to the well again quickly but he was poor on soft ground in the Dewhurst and his margin over the now injured Master Of The Seas was a cigarette paper in the Newmarket Guineas. Battleground has a bit to prove now but he did win the Chesham on soft. Looks third string on bookings and there was little encouragement from his last run. In the end I felt compelled to back one who will go on the ground. Mac Swiney seems all about soft ground. He didn't rub his race last time but was said to have suffered nasal discharge for a week after that effort. Maybe a mile is also his actual trip and he should perform better today. I expect an improved show today. 3.20 Curragh Mac Swiney 7/1
What is Ed Chamberlain's problem with never reading out the 3rd placed horse? I know it is shown on the graphic, but a bit dismissive of the 3rd horse imo
Well, I lost out by a short head in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas but today was my day to prevail by the same margin. I though Mac Swiney was going to score with a but to spare but Poetic Flare wouldn't go away and the post just came in time. 8/1 was a fair enough return. The winner has an excellent record on soft or heavy but just doesn't seem the same colt on good ground or faster. He will be one to keep on the right side when the mud is flying. Poetic Flare ran an excellent race, particularly after a quick turnaround. Not many tackle all three Guineas but he nearly landed two of them. I doubt he was at his best in France and it's unusual to see Bolger hold sway and Aidan struggling. Van Gogh was the other with soft form and he ran well enough today but there was nothing to suggest he is an Epsom Derby horse today, so maybe he will go to the French version, while St Mark's Basilica stays at a mile. Wembley was woeful today, finishing behind a 150/1 shot in last place. Kind of embarrassing for the jockey I would have thought but it won't stop money coming for Ryan's mount in future big races. Battleground was a non-runner because of the ground and he will probably get a chance to prove himself once more at Group 1 level when the surface is faster. La Barrosa was OK given the conditions today, while Lucky Vega was puzzling in that he seemed outpaced before staying on. He had been uneasy in the betting, presumably because of the going but he didn't run like a horse who had been undone by the surface today. Mac Swiney's win will no doubt bolster confidence for Bolshoi Ballet in the Derby but I don't think the form reads across from today to the Derrinstown, where Mac Swiney was in arrears of the Epsom favourite. This looked like the real Mac Swiney today and we didn't see that last time. The biggest concern I have is that Mac Swiney is now 7/1 for Epsom but he didn't look like a horse who wanted another half mile today. I am sure Poetic Flare would have claimed him if there were another furlong to go today and he winner today will need to stay four furlongs further at Epsom. He is also ground dependent, so I see no value at 7/1 myself. Just one bet today, as I thought most of the races looked tricky. Flotus was impressive on debut for the Crisfords. The Starspanglebanner filly came right away on her 2YO debut over 6F to score by more than 4 lengths. She was favourite at 7/4 and despite missing the kick and briefly running too freely, she made a good move and got to the front. She seemed to find another gear then and fairly whooshed clear. Obviously it was soft ground today and perhaps didn't suit some of them but there looked to be more to come from Flotus, who is named after the code name for First Lady Of The United States and I would be looking to run her at Royal Ascot if she were mine. ps Donald Trump was Potus, but his code stood for Prick Of The Utmost Stupidity.
I have to say Grendel, in terms of logic and reasoning given to why you select a horse for a race, you're about the best in the business to my eyes. Fair play on McSwiney today. Well done anyone else among the winners, tough going on the softer going.
In review Postileo ran, at best, OK-ish. Although he did look very one paced, on that ground, in the final furlong – although, in fairness, plenty of horses did today. Meanwhile, I see that ‘Irish 2.000 Guineas’ beaten favourite, Lucky Vega, won’t be around much longer on the old track. Has been syndicated for stud duties in Australia and will leave for those shores in July.
