Bristol City announce Retained List Friday, May 14th 2021 Bristol City today announced its Retained List following the conclusion of the 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship season. City would like to thank the following 11 players who have been released following the end of their contracts: Hakeeb Adelakun, Nathan Baker, Famara Diédhiou, Rene Gilmartin, Jack Hunt, Henri Lansbury, Adrian Mariappa, Jamie Paterson, Tommy Rowe, Liam Walsh, Marley Watkins. Discussions with Danny Simpson and Andreas Weimann are ongoing to extend their stays at the club. City Manager Nigel Pearson said: “I have spoken with each departing player and wish them all well in the next stage of their careers. “We are entering into a significant transition period for the club and central to that is deciding which players can take this club forward. The first element of that is largely done and now it’s about looking forward to who we can bring in as we build towards next season.” City would also like to thank Steven Sessegnon for his service while on loan and he will now return to parent club Fulham. Pretty much what I expected, although I wondered whether Baker might be a Pearson type leader, but my understanding is he is the 2nd or 3rd highest earners at the club and his injuries woes make him a huge risk. I expected Walsh maybe but again my understanding is he was reluctant to return from Coventry, so hey ho. As for Simpson maybe some sort of player coach role? Absolutely spot on. I fully expect at least one or two contracted players to move on as well.
Ha! you guys beat me to it - I posted on the other thread!! Not surprised about Weimann Slightly surprised that we aren't keeping Baker, Walsh or Pato - I thought at least one of those players would make the grade.
some surprising names ...some very surprising names! and one wonders whether any [ other than Fammy ] were offered anything prior to or since NP arrived … how many of these will come back to haunt us [ as a few in the past have ]! How many of the over 24's will be "open to offer's? Wage bill a saving of maybe £4m? looking at what is left a matchday team squad might be …. Bentley O leary Kalas Vyner Da Silva Simpson Taylor M Nagy Massengo Bakinson Janneh Towler Semenyo Palmer Williams O Dowda Wells Martin Pearson IMO that would need quite a bit of strengthening maybe[ 5 ] definitely 3 new players with at least 1 each of a defender [ full back ] a CF [ rotate with current ] 1 strong midfielder … time will tell nb left out the youngsters as only had 2 or 3 games so far ….
'Come back to haunt us' is a well worn cliche in football. I am struggling to remember the actual last player we released who came back to 'haunt us'. Although I do reserve the right to accept Szmodics might.
This will mean a LOT of recruitment is required this summer, which given the financial backdrop, is not somewhere we want to be. For me, the one name I would have kept in the squad would have been Pato, but it became obvious early in NP's tenure that Pato wasn't his type of player. Walsh and Baker have just been to injury-plagued to take a risk on a new contract, and Walsh is unproven at this level to boot.
Pato hot and cold one good game five bad/average games. Walsh has done nothing to warrant a contract.
We have just gotten a lot of high paid players off of the books, so the financial backdrop doesn't come into it, Baker is one of the top 3 highest paid player and Watkins is in the top ten as well.
Joe Morrell springs to mind Luke Ayling and Luke Freeman both went on to bigger and better things - I suppose it depends on what is meant by 'haunt' - if they score against us after leaving then JM is the only one I can think of right now. Matt Smith was an absolute pest for QPR when we played them, but didn't score (I think). Chris Wood went on to play against us a few times - as did Albert Adomah. They were both annoying opponents.
Joe Morrell I believe has been transfer listed after 1 season couldn't get into the first team, Portsmouth might be his next destination. Ayling was a gift for Leeds a huge mistake by the club, Freeman was allowed to run his contract down another huge mistake by the club. Smith and Woods were never our players.
https://footballleaguefc.com/bristol-city-2019-20-player-wages/ Mawson......£32k per week Kalas ..........£25K.............. Weimaan....£22.5k............ Baker..........£20K.............. Nagy...........£15.5K............ Diedhiou....£18K............... Wells..........£15250K......... Martin........£15K............... Palmer.......£20K............... Bentley......£12K................ Hunt .........£12K............... Watkins.....£12K............... Total..........£219.250K + Plus the rest £ 85450K (approx) = £ 304700 per week Makes you eyes water.
a bit over £5m so could afford to replace with 5 players on over £12k a week but need to be realistic toward at least 6 of the squad [ younger ones ] with contracts of about 5k each [ ish ] about £1.5m so 4 players on 15k += £3.5m that would be 10 players sorted on 3 year plus 1 year option PLUS goalies [ 3 ] to get extra £10k shared ==== job done
Listening to Dan Bentley at the under 23's game today, it would seem still under 23 coach and part time goalkeeper coach, very highly thought of.
