Craig MacGillivray has been named The News/Sports Mail Player of the Season.

The Pompey keeper follows in the footsteps of Christian Burgess, who claimed the prize at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

He collected 64 per cent of the votes in a poll run by readers of our local newspapers after impressing with his consistency between the sticks.

MacGillivray has made 52 appearances in all competitions this term and kept 17 clean sheets, including in December’s victory at champions Hull.

He said: "It's a real honour. The supporters are the club, so for them to choose me as their Player of the Season is an amazing feeling.

"To be on a trophy with so many famous names, such as David James, is a real privilege. I'm very thankful to everyone who voted for me."

Ryan Williams came second in the voting, with Callum Johnson finishing up in third position.

Previous winners of the award include Alan Knight, Noel Blake, Guy Whittingham, Peter Crouch, Arjan de Zeeuw, David James, Glen Johnson, Michael Doyle, Enda Stevens and Matt Clarke.

The late Alan McLoughlin lifted the trophy after impressing with his displays during the 1993/94 campaign.

MacGillivray was also voted Player of the Season by seven different supporter groups, while Naylor was selected by another four.

Apparently, Kenny Jackett is hot favourite for the vacant managers job at Leyton Orient. 59 year old Kenny has been out of work for a handful of months after leaving Portsmouth following on from their EFL Trophy final defeat against Salford City.

Indeed, Pompey employed the Cowley brothers but narrowly missed out on a play-off place on the last day of the League One season at the weekend.

Jackett was watching on in the Sky studios as a pundit but his media career could well be over already, with him on course to become the new manager at League Two Orient.

The men from east London confirmed earlier this week that they were looking for a new man to take the helm for the start of the 2021/22 season and Football League World has been told that former Millwall and Wolves boss Jackett is currently in pole position to take the job.

A promotion winner in the past, of course, Orient will be hoping that he can do the same for them if he does indeed ink a contract, with them finishing inside the top half of the League Two table but 12 points off of the top seven this season.

*** If Kenny does get appointed, then almost certainly Joe Gallen will surely follow him to Brisbane Road as his assistant manager. Possibly, coach Jake Wigley may follow also. To my mind, that wouldn't be the end of the world for Pompey, as they could bring in former players such as Matt Taylor (currently coaching in Spurs academy) or Gary O'Neill (currently coaching at Bournemouth I believe). Even Charlie Daniells if he were to be released as a player could do the job, as he has apparently worked with Haji Minoga at the training ground ***

Portsmouth are understood to be interested in taking Posh left-back Dan Butler back to Fratton Park.

Butler (26) is approaching the last year of his contract at Peterborough United, but it’s believed Darren Ferguson is keen to keep hold of a player who started 40 League One matches in his current club’s promotion campaign.

Butler is one of the Posh players currently negotiating an improved contract with director of football Barry Fry. He would command a fee if he opted to leave.

Butler made 54 appearances for Portsmouth at the start of his career before leaving Fratton Park in 2015. Butler played for Torquay and Newport before Posh signed him from the latter in July, 2019.

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Josh Griffiths has been linked with a potential summer switch to Pompey.
It is being reported by talkSPORT that the Blues are one of a number of clubs who are interested in signing the 19-year-old, who spent the duration of last season on loan at Cheltenham Town and helped them to earn promotion up to League One.
The reports do make sense, with Pompey only having one senior goalkeeper tied down for the next season. Duncan Turnbull and Taylor Seymour were both released last weekend, while Craig MacGillivray currently remains in negotiations with the club over a potential new deal. Alex Bass' contract does not run out until 2023.
Griffiths played 50 times in all competitions for Cheltenham last season and impressed as they won the League Two title. In those 50 appearances, Griffiths kept 23 clean sheets and conceded just 45 goals.
The young goalkeeper was also part of England’s squad for the 2021 Under-21s European Championships and has played for England’s under-18s.
Griffiths’ current contract at The Hawthorns is set to expire in 2023 and he is yet to make an appearance for the Baggies.

Portsmouth confirm three departures as Danny Cowley's coaching re-structure takes place

Portsmouth have confirmed the exits of three members of the first-team coaching staff as Danny Cowley prepares his team for next season.

Joe Gallen, who was the assistant manager to Kenny Jackett during his time at Fratton Park, has exited having served as a first-team coach under Cowley for the final 12 games of the 2020/21 season.

First-team coach Jake Wigley and first-team goalkeeping coach John Keeley are also departing the Blues as part of the coaching re-structure.

Talks took place between Cowley and members of his coaching staff on Monday and Tuesday of this week and off the back of that, the trio have departed Fratton Park.

Danny Cowley strengthens Portsmouth recruitment process by bringing in well-regarded ex-Lincoln and Huddersfield pair Matt Page and Toby Ellis.

Now the well-regarded recruitment analysts have arrived at Fratton Park to aid Pompey’s squad overhaul.

The south-coast future of head of recruitment Phil Boardman, who himself possesses an analytics background with Wolves, is not yet clear.

However, Cowley has wasted no time in bringing in Page and Ellis to boost his summer player hunt.

Page and Ellis met at Lincoln University and created sports company Virsco, while devising their iCoach4Sport software to help teachers in school.

Following an email to then-Lincoln boss Cowley, they adapted their system for use with a professional football club, with impressive results at Sincil Bank.

Since then, the software has developed considerably, providing an exhaustive source of statistical information for use with recruitment as well as assessing the performances of current club players.

Such has been their admiration for the creators’ work, Danny Cowley and brother Nicky took them to Championship club Huddersfield in September 2019.

Now Page and Ellis have been reunited at Fratton Park as Cowley assembles a backroom team he believes can support a League One promotion challenge next season.

Pompey Sign Liam Vincent - Defender arrives from Bromley
please log in to view this image

Pompey have completed the signing of left-back Liam Vincent from Bromley for an undisclosed fee.

The 18-year-old – who progressed through the academy at the National League club – has penned a three-year deal.

Blues boss Danny Cowley said: “We are delighted to sign Liam on a development contract. He first came to our attention when he played for Bromley against our U18s in the FA Youth Cup.

“He has subsequently made a number of first team appearances at National League level, playing a part in helping Bromley reach the play-offs.

“While there was lots of interest from a number of Premier League and Championship clubs, he believed Pompey to be the right club for his continued development. Having played senior football already, he wanted to go into a first team environment.

“The recruitment team identified Liam and watched him play for both the youth and first teams at Bromley.

“He has a lovely left foot and excellent physical attributes. Offensively, he carries real threat with ball carrying skills and crossing ability. He is also a set-piece taker.

“He has work to do on the defensive aspect of his game and we look forward to working with him on the training ground to develop this area of his performance.

“What was most impressive about Liam when we met him was his humility to learn and to get better.

“We now have two exciting young, attacking full-backs at the club in Haji and Liam – both have outstanding athletic potential and we will work with them to develop their game.

“This, accompanied by an excellent learning capacity, are qualities we look for when signing young players.

“Our plan for both of them is to provide an engaging environment and challenging games programme.

“We will monitor their progress during pre-season. Our aim is to get them regular football at first team level this season – this is vital at this stage of their development.

“We anticipate this being via a loan pathway, but are always open-minded. As we have seen many times before, young players can make outstanding progress and force their way into the side.”

Vincent made his competitive debut for Bromley in their 2-0 victory over King’s Lynn back in February.

He went on to make seven appearances for the Ravens as they finished seventh in the National League to qualify for the play-offs.

Jack Whatmough is set to sign for Wigan. Sources in North-West suggest length of deal and financial package far more favourable than what was offered by Pompey. Whatmough has spoken to a number of clubs, but going to link up with ex-Pompey asst. manager Leam Richardson again.

Sources: Portsmouth, Burton and Crewe set sights on signing Brandon Wilson on free transfer
please log in to view this image

Portsmouth, Burton Albion and Crewe Alexandra are chasing Australian midfielder Brandon Wilson, Football Insider understands.

The 24 year old Australia U23 international came through Burnley’s academy and holds an English passport. A recruitment source told
Football Insider that he is out of contract at Perth Glory in the Australian A-League and has rejected several offers of a new deal.

His free-agent status makes him attractive to EFL clubs as the pyramid continues to suffer the economic fallout from the pandemic.

Wilson swapped East Lancashire for Australia in 2016 when the midfielder signed for Perth Glory as a 19-year-old.

Prior to that, Wilson spent three years with the Clarets, playing for their under-18s and under-21s.

Back in the country where he spent his youth, Wilson played 58 times for Perth, winning the A-League in 2018-19. He switched to Wellington Phoenix in January 2020 but his time at the club proved short-lived. Citing “personal reasons,” Wilson negotiated a mutual termination of his Phoenix contract in October to allow him to return to Perth.

He has featured 15 times this season for the Western Australia side, who are currently 9th in the A-League standings. The three-time Australia U 23 international is capable of playing in both conventional and defensive midfield roles. Wilson was nicknamed “Juan Mata” during his days at Turf Moor and is eligible to play for Botswana, the country of his birth.

Portsmouth are looking to sign Josh Sims on a free transfer when his deal with Southampton expires in the summer.
The versatile 5' 9" tall attacker has come through the ranks with the Saints but he has found game time hard to come by in recent years, with his minutes coming from various loan spells.

Therefore, with his deal up in the summer, Sims knows he will be on the move, and the Portsmouth News have revealed that a switch to Fratton Park could be on the cards.

They state that Danny Cowley has identified the 24-year-old as a potential target, although it won’t be easy for Pompey to secure his signature, as the report claims there is plenty of other interest for the player to consider.

Interestingly, they say that the thought of moving from Southampton to Portsmouth is not one that bothers Sims, who was actually on the books of the League One side as a youngster.

Sims spent last season on loan at Doncaster in the third tier, and he was impressive, scoring one goal and registering eight assists.

The Southampton connection means that this would be a pretty high-profile move for Portsmouth but from a football perspective it seems a no-brainer.

Simply put, Sims has the potential to be a top player in League One and Pompey need attacking reinforcements, so he really would improve Cowley’s squad as he looks to build a group that can win promotion.

So, this is an encouraging link for the fans, and the fact Sims isn’t fussed about the move bodes well. Pompey need to do all they can to get this sorted.

Free agent Seok Jae-Lee is in line for a move to Sunderland after turning down a contract at League One rivals Portsmouth, according to The News.

According to reports from the South Coast, South Korean winger Seok Jae-Lee is set to undergo a trial in the north east as he weighs up his next move.

The Seoul-born 17 year old forward turned down the chance to extend his contract at Portsmouth and is now available for transfer, although Sunderland would have to pay compensation for a man who recently became a free agent.

In Lee Johnson, the Black Cats have a coach who boasts a proud track record when it comes to developing youngsters.

Should he impress on Wearside, Sunderland may be the ideal destination for Lee to fulfil his potential.

Sad news. I am, like all of us, very sorry to see him leave but even more sad to see him go to Wigan. I like to see ex Pompey players improve and see Jack as a championship player. Other than probably financially I see Wigan as a step down rather than a step up.
