On the 27th of August 1965, Charlton Athletic made the first ever substitute in league football.

Charlton play in red and white, as their original kit was stolen, and they had to borrow a new kit from Woolwich Arsenal.

'The Addicks' official nickname originates from a fish and chip shop in the area of their ground.

The oldest Mulberry Tree in Britain is to be found in the grounds of Charlton House - planted at the suggestion of Charles I in 1608. Along with many others of its type – Morus Nigra, the Black Mulberry – it was planted to try to establish silk-worms in Britain. Unfortunately they only feed on White Mulberries.

The only assassinated British prime minister, Spencer Perceval‘s remains lie in St Luke’s Church, nearly two centuries after he was shot dead in the lobby of the House of Commons.

Blackheath FC were a founding member of the FA, but its withdrawal began the divide with soccer and it is now the oldest open rugby club in the world.

Charlton is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as Cerletone. It is formed from Old English 'ceorl' and 'tūn' and means 'farmstead of the peasants'.

According to the 2011 UK census, the population included people of every British and Irish national identity except Cornish.

I still can’t believe that we’ve finished as champions. I keep on checking the table to make sure it’s true!!

That, or Burke back in with AJ moving to CM.
Would be happy to see Emmanuel given a start at RB too. So unfortunate not to have featured, but Coyle has been superb tbf.

When they licensed football grounds in the 1970s The Valley has the largest capacity, 72,000. Not that it would ever have been tested. Until they extended Old Trafford the last time over 70,000 were in a football league stadium was for the Who concert there. The Who were managed by Alan Curbishley's brother at the time.
And, they used to enter the field to the sound of Red, Red Robin long a certain rugby club did.

I think he will go with a strong team, maybe Burke back in for Jones, but he could well stick with the same back four to start then change things at 60 minutes. I would like to see Slater back in, but I have a feeling he might go with Smallwood to start.

He might already have a feeling whether Slater could be available to us for next season, if not then he may not feature.

Difficult to 2nd guess what McCann will do, so it will be interesting to see the team sheet on Sunday.

Honeyman is being rested on Sunday due to him carrying an ankle injury, I think Slater/Crowley will come in for him.

Hard game!! Charlton have something to play for and could possibly creep into the play-offs....We've done what we set out to do but wouldn't it be lovely to finish on 2 PPG:emoticon-0100-smile

2-1 for the table topping Tigers...

    John, We know sadly the Honeymonster will be missing, from Grant's press interview earlier;

"Everyone that was involved last weekend is okay, apart from George Honeyman who will miss the game. He's got through the last couple of games with injections and strappings, and he doesn't need to do that anymore.

We've both taken the decision for him to miss this one. That gives an opportunity for somebody else to come in and we'll make a decision on who that will be over the next 24 hours or so."

Got to say, well done George, for playing through his injuries. Hopefully, the sensible thing will be that the "somebody to come in" will be someone who is going to be here next season?!!

Would love to see us round off the season in style .. but I gotta be honest here .. they've been on it for the last 3 months, the lads have done what they needed to in order to clinch the title and promotion .. and I for one won't be complaining if we get an after the Lord mayor's showing on sunday. Think Nigels lot will nick it and wish them well in the play offs

Talking of which, I went to Trenchers in Whitby last Sunday. It was lovely even if the mucky buggers left the skin on one side. Chips were the best I've had in ages.

Mushy peas, for those that care.

Trenchers is bang average these days. Magpie has drifted too. Church Street is where the quality is found now - Riverside and Mister Chips.

If you like tartare sauce their home-made gear is really very tasty; when we go through on the bikes the Mrs reminds to bring a tub of it home.
