I new Micky really well. Lived in Anlaby and was associated with Grams for years, mainly being the club secretary. Huge turn out at his funeral where they put his Newcastle shirt in his coffin. Lovely guy and a good footballer in his time.

As well as being a friend Roger was my solicitor until he retired. Big City fan.

Naughty Norman lived by his name. Good footballer and cricketer. Played with him for Hull Ionians Coal Exporters for years

Indeed he is a big City fan. Proper old fashioned eccentric, still driving his vintage cars. Lovely man and a pleasure to have known him for so many years.

Nasty rather than Naughty Norman! Always better to be on his side, whatever we played. As a fast bowler, he scared the **** out of the best batsmen in this area, with no helmets and dodgy wickets. I do have a lot of time for him, he took me under his wing. In his prime, I was mid teens, so if he wanted extra nets in the week, he'd always persuade me to be his target (again no helmets!). Certainly sharpened you up for matches though.
Later, he'd moved on to captain another club. After a phone call from him, it didn't take me long to follow him.
He'd ferry me all over in my teens and I'd quiz him about his semi pro football career and who he played with. Frank (Eddie's brother} Gray was someone he was still playing with. There were other big names who I cant remember. I later learnt Norman was actually rubbish at football, and basically these semi pro teams paid him to look after their pro's. I'm not sure if I was disappointed!

I knew him well too, I worked with him, lived down the same street in Anlaby as him, and played football with him. He was a really good friend and a great guy, took from us far too early. I was at his funeral also.

I played with Norm a few times a long time ago
Very nasty !! Had a mate called Galgy gray who was a brilliant full back best tackler I’ve seen around same age as Pete skipper and played with him as a youth.
Remember galgy telling me about one time he was playing with Norm and someone, I won’t name him but think ex city player had run off with Norms mrs, as the bloke was knelt in the ground after a collision norm ran by and casually booted him in the head!!! Laid out.
My mate galgy sadly passed away age 46 from brain cancer fifteen years ago

I played in a game there once must have been in the late sixties at S. Cave, and it was a cup game. There was no ref turned up, so one of their guys reffed the game.

Late on, it was 3-3, and we got a corner on the left, which I took with my right foot, an inswinger, and scored. Their guy disallowed the goal for offside. <doh>

Nice to hear you knew Micky Barker.

South Cave do seem to be getting a bit of stick here. Coincidentally my first ever game in the Amateur League was for Earls Melton away at South Cave - things didn't go well at the start as I managed to break my little finger in the pre-match "kick in". I was able to play on though (2-2 draw) and it was a good game with no controversial refereeing decisions - I can't remember the ref's name but he was very well known at the time, looked like old man Steptoe and was the oldest ERCFA referee. For younger readers substitute old man Steptoe for Jamie Vardy in 30 years time.
Also, I think it was Norman who was the leading light in developing the ground at South Cave and building the smashing clubhouse - I've never been in it but I did go to the opening by Billy Whitehurst a few years back.

There was a ref we got on a Sunday, not sure whether he officiated in Amateur league on a Saturday, called Harry Fish, he looked a bit like old man Steptoe?

I remember Harry Fish and we did seem to get him a lot on Sundays - I think he was a fair bit younger than the man I'm thinking of though. The Steptoe resembling ref was quite well known because of his relatively old age at the time and was, in all fairness, a decent ref.

Earlier you mentioned Mike Ford at WAKAM - after some problems with his cartilage he stopped playing and took up refereeing. He did get up to quite a high standard I think - possibly running the line in the Yorkshire League. Obviously a better ref than player!

Now you mention it, I do seem to recall that Mike did go on to referee, and yes he probably was a better ref than a player, but he did always gave his best in games.

Thus spake two superstars of the local amateur football leagues. Show a little sensitivity fellas, others may see your skill levels in a similar light?

No criticism of skill levels intended - just a comment on relative levels of "success" as a player and as an official. I can confirm that John Ex etc. was a very useful midfielder. good engine and an eye for spectacular goals (he also had a car, unusual in those early days and a big help for away games).

Children's football started a few weeks back, the backlog of games is that big it finishes in late June. Also lots of midweek games to help catch up- which some teams are having to give up as 'walk overs' due to logistics of getting from school / parents finishing work and then travelling somewhere for 5.30. Weird thing is some games only one parent is allowed to watch due to some Covid rule that makes no sense - appears to be games where the ground is at a school / sports club. Good to see them all back and smiles on their faces. Juniors team even won a game and he scored a 'worldy' - chipped the keeper from outside the box, which I saw but didn't recognise* it was him as he normally only scores from 5 yards out :)

(* this may also reflect the fact my optician sent a letter saying my check up is 6 months overdue, at least I think that's what it says...)
