Good to see you Surrey. :emoticon-0148-yes:
Well they are breaking many records regarding the amount of votes/ being in power/first female MP in Hartlepool.
What’s also interesting interesting is the amount of council seats the Tories are winning in England.

Richard Burgon calling for Labour to follow the policies in their manifesto that proved so popular with the voters, they really haven't a clue...

This is what I said a couple of days ago.
Those on the left just can't work out why the majority of people don't share their world view.

This result is a worry though.
We need a strong opposition in our system and Labour are anything but a strong opposition.
This particular Tory government needs checks in place and they will become worse and worse as their unbridled majority grows imo.

Tory record - delivering Brexit and a successful vaccination programme that knocked the EU policy sideways. Tory policy to include continuing signing trade agreements with countries worldwide amid an anticipated period of strong UK growth

Labour record - Sir Kier tried and failed to get a second Brexit referendum, Islington concerned for the welfare of members of Hamas. Labour policy - shout loudly about curtains and wallpaper that voters didn't have to pay for, and put up an arch Remainer as prospective candidate in Hartlepool

    Says it all really.

Labour voters' conclusion on Hartlepool trouncing - Northern voters are thick as mince

Agree entirely about the checks and balances on a government with such a huge majority. I hope the intake of Tory MP's will be different stamp to some of the worst of the past (those with a sense of entitlement or wide boys looking for a Parliamentary seat to gain financial advantage.) I was impressed with the new MP for Hartlepool. She seems to be a local woman, modest and sincere.

I think the political climate has changed...over many years. No longer can labour claim to be the working mans party really. Mainly as the definition of working man has really changed since the 70's 80's and even 90's. So much can be attributed to this, among this such as the council house sell offs, the rise of self employed and more identifying as middle class. Oh and brexit! I suspect Labour has an uphill struggle. I am not sure Starmer has a grip which is a shame as he is intelligent. Boris a calamity but has managed vaccine programme superbly which I suspect has aided immensly to his credibility.

I just hope 'momentum' don't get their grip back on Labour policies. Bunch of nutters but I can see it brewing already...lurch to the left!

But a healthy two or even three party democracy with robust policies is good. Already is 11 years of Tory PM and I won't be at all surprised if next 2 elections consolidate this until the 2030's

Sadly, Starmer has had a charisma by-pass, he has the personality of a speak-your-weight machine and lacks any of the qualities needed to win hearts and minds. Labour are out of control within their own ranks as Momentum will take any opportunity to undermine his leadership and after this disaster he's a dead man walking.

Boris only has to have one foot in the middle ground of politics to be virtually unopposed, until a credible soft left opposition emerges nothing will change...

Agree. One thing Labour can be thankful for, is that the Lib Dems are total non-entities. Otherwise, Labour could see it's position as official opposition usurped, in the same way that Labour took over from the Liberals at the turn of the C20th.

There's no easy fix for Labour. The hard left are saying we were right with Corbyn's policies and it's Brexit that messed us. Believe that, and they'll continue their vortex spiral downwards.
