I remember complaining about how bad Davis was for claiming crosses, saying that he wouldn’t be good enough for the premier league to my mate. We had just watched and Eastleigh match and gone to Fleming Arms to watch Saints on TV. We then watched Saints beat Leeds with Davis being the main reason we held on for the win. My mate said at the end of game. “You sure he’s not very good”

Really? I haven’t posted on this forum for a couple of years because I lost my password. What is the correct term then?

Anyway you are completely and utterly wrong on this.

And the fact that “use of the term ITK” = almost 100% chance of bullshit in your world is insane

Anyway I was mainly interested in where he could possibly think he could get that kind of contract. I don’t think any clubs above us have open first choice goalie positions and even then many won’t pay them 100k. And the Scott Carson/Richard Wright role won’t pay that either

I don’t even think liverpool will give that to their reserve

unless it is a gross / net thing?

I'm with Ches thighs on this one. Maybe you are ITK on this, but maybe not, we don't know that. I find it hard to believe that a player that has spent large spells of his career quietly being 2nd choice, having dropped out of a struggling team again this year is now demanding 100k a week. I'd rather wait and see and give McCarthy the benefit of the doubt rather than jumping on him based on one supposed ITK. Nothing personal Greg!

As it stands we have 2 average PL keepers and we are an average PL side. We don't really have the budget to make changes at GK if we can avoid it. We've gotta hope Gunn is the future but in the mean time I can see our GK situation being the same next season as it has been this.

Gunn cost us £12-13M. I think “hoping he’s our future” is a bit fanciful but yep, stranger things have happened.

Fair enough. For avoidance of doubt I didn’t mean to imply he was requesting that salary off of us. Clearly on a Bosman at the end of his contract

Just seemed like the use of the term “ITK” was a bit of a weird trigger term. But I assume the reaction would have been the same if I said “I have heard”

And as I mentioned I am now more intrigued by the thought exercise of assuming it is true and wondering where he would expect this from. Which was my main interest in the first place but I re-articulated it to fit this Saints specific rumours thread

And ruffled some feathers! (Should have known better of course)

In hindsight I should have left out the rumoured wage demands and just said something about Alex potentially not signing a new contract and which premier league club do people seriously see him becoming a starter for

The fact it isn’t an easy answer kind of says what we need to know about our goalkeeper situation. It is the similar thing I say to Man United fans regarding - which other premier league club would take solskjaer over their current manager (and pretty sure the answer is “not many if any”)

I am pretty sure, for example, that the Palace and Newcastle goalies have insane stats. It is either one or both of them that have a really high “expected conceded” number (or did last year) and were basically bailed out by the goalkeepers. Feel like it was Dubravka?

No disrespect to you, but literally anyone can and does refer to themselves as ITK these days; so much so that it is a completely futile label (at least for me it is - if others choose to buy it then that’s up to them).

I’ll wait for more reputable sources to report it before I believe it.

McCarthy has served us well and I will hold off from any judgement of him until it’s all out in the open (just in case it is BS).

like I said - I didn’t know it had become a faux pas to use the term

And I am not really judging him since I mentioned elsewhere that it doesn’t seem like he really loses out by waiting and hoping for it. It isn’t like all offers will vanish next summer and he will have to sign up somewhere at half of what he is on now

However, the risk is if he gets injured say next march and his contract expires 2-3 months later, he won't have a wage at all at the end - He will have insurance, but that will only cover him whilst in contract, and maybe a much smaller amount if he has to retire from football and cannot get a new contract.

Sorry but why would Sam Johnson come here if he's had a good season at the Baggies, he's more likely to go elsewhere if we are that skint

It is a similar question to the one I had about McCarthy. Which teams about us have a goalkeeper slot that is open / realistically up for grabs ?

    Man City - No
    Man United - Maybe
    Leicester - No
    Chelsea - No
West Ham - Maybe but Fabianski is doing well
    Liverpool - No
Tottenham - Maybe (they seem to always be linked with Pope)
    Everton - Maybe
    Arsenal - Maybe but unlikely
    Aston Villa - No
    Leeds - Yes?
    Wolves - No
Crystal Palace - I’d say “No” based on keeper form
Brighton - Maybe but very similar to us

    And then:

    Newcastle - I’d say No
Burnley - No (not unless Pope goes)

So where is Johnstone really going ? Somewhere I assume but I couldn’t immediately tell you where. Spurs possibly if Lloris is moved on.

Wasn’t implying that you were judging him yourself, but it seemed like a few others were starting to.

Things like this easily snowball and before you know it McCarthy is a greedy bastard and the fans all hate him, when in truth he’s probably said nothing at all.

Me pouring doubt on this rumor practically guarantees that it will turn out true.

Manchester United have joined Premier League rivals Tottenham and West Ham in the race to sign West Brom's English goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, 28, in preparation for the departure of Spanish stopper David de Gea, 30, this summer. (ESPN)

He started at Utd I believe.

Regarding McCarthy I thought the conversation was about him being a number 2 somewhere, not starting. Chelsea would be my guess as I think it’s likely one of Kepa/Mendy leaves.

But this is all for summer 2022 when we have been relegated so lots of players will want out

The problem with more reputable sources is they tell you things like Danny Ings is about to sign a new contract.
    Rumours huh!

The problem with ITK rumours is that we normally never know if they are true or not, and it's probably quite common that things change and make the information look made up. For example, Ings may well have been about to sign a contract, so the initial rumour was true, but it's not out of the question that a club then contacted his agent making Ings delay signing.

Similarly with McCarthy, he may be after more money, but he may also end up staying. So the 'ITK' posts could be true at one point but turn out to look like horse ****e when the situations change. Best thing is usually to wait for things to be confirmed either way by the club <cheers>

But that requires us fans to be sensible, reasonable and patient! What sort of debate will that engender? I much prefer the 'everyone is being sold, Ralph is leaving, the tea lady has put in a transfer request' posts, so that we can do our headless chickens impressions
