It looks to me that the players arn't fit enough, they don't have the energy, they should be closing down players every chance they get, chase passes to the keeper, how many times do we see keeps slice the ball out of play if pressure is put on

It always astonishes me how we are the ONLY club where the opposition can comfortably get over the halfway line and play it around looking for an opening. Nobody does it worse than we do it.

I don't know how or why a PL outfit can be that bad at pressing or playing further up the pitch, but our ability to transition quickly to unsettle the opposition is non-existent. We are flawed at a very basic level and it's not just the quality of players.

There's one consistent factor, aside from the buffoonery of Bruce, and that's the selection of Shelvey.

If Fulham fail to win any of their remaining games it's over. We pick up 2 points in our run in it's over.

There is a very limited number of way's they can stay up and could be over before they kick off vs Burnley on Monday, if not by the time the final whistle blows.

It's more about each game at a time

If Fulham beat Burnley which is their next game and we lose to Leicester they'll be effectively 2 wins from relegating nufc because they have the advantage of goal difference... It's highly likely nufc won't take a point until Sheff United, so it's not quite over at all, but of course if Fulham lose to Burnley I'll be saying the jobs done.

    It's essentially crunch time

It's shelvey he basically sits right in front of the back for just wandering about... He doesn't like moving fwd because he gets exposed.. He'd rather just punt it to someone and then hide... He's absolutely useless... I don't think his long passing is even there anymore either.. He's litterally just out there hiding

I used to think he had some value, but now it’s clear as day he’s probably THE biggest match day problem (alongside Bruce).

He wasn't great but his legs went on top of that at the age of 26. I cannot understand why every fan can see that, but our manager clearly sees him as the 1st name on his team sheet..

    Is it us or him?

This stinks of Bruce, tbh. Shelvey has been loyal and Bruce likes that. Bruce also struggles to understand tactical nuances of football. Many of us, myself included, were screaming for 3 CM's to be introduced months before Bruce (might have even been Jones, in the end) worked out that was the problem. He thought conceding too many meant we needed more defenders, for example, he's a really simple, basic man. There's no intricacy to Newcastle's play, no decent movement - Bruce thinks if you keep people happy, they'll play better and if you have better players than your opponent you'll win the game. I don't think he sees things any deeper than that. Same applies to persevering with Shelvey, he thinks he keeps possession and plays killer passes, yet there's no stats anywhere to back up anything, he keeps possession in pointless areas and offers nothing else for a central midfielder. He's a Sunday League player.

You can tell from the way the players set up against Arsenal that he's not creating any sense of tactical awareness, urgency or identity. The players constantly reverted back to Rafa's 9 at the back mentality, which tells me whatever Bruce is doing - if anything - isn't sinking in as they just keep reverting to old habits. There's no pattern to anything we do - it's "get it to Max and RUN, lad, RUN". If the players are up for it and the opposition have an off day, it'll work, probably around 30% of the time - coincidentally enough, same as his win rate and exactly average for a team with about the 6th worst squad.

I'm of the opinion that no manager working in professional football today would do a worse job than Steve Bruce. I don't think it's possible. I think if we had NO manager, the squad would be where it is right now if not a bit higher.

Shelvey would have been great in the 80's, but since the late 90's early 00's he's been effectively a passenger at the top flight. As you say when he had an ounce of movement in him while younger he could hang on the coattails and look like a prospect by playing a nice pass or two, now he has no movement and his passing is not that great it makes up for his lack of anything else.

The only time he had value was in Rafa's team where he didn't have to move anywhere because we played defensive counter. As soon as we wanted the midfield to move and play front foot, he should have been sold. Everyone knew this except it would appear Steve Bruce. I hated watching the football under Rafa. It was boring as ****. However at least he understood that getting certain types of player to suit the style of play you wanted was important. Bruce appears to be doing the old round peg, square hole routine. Perhaps that is because he is so simple he thinks "need central midfielder, Jonjo is central midfield, next" rather than I need a midfielder who will go box to box, pressure the ball, or someone who can put their football on the ball and make us tick, but I need him to be mobile, or I want a mobile destroyer who is going to get us quality ball.

What the **** are these people on. Whoever Rodgers supports, I guarantee he wouldn’t want Bruce in charge.

    correct. But I wouldn’t:

I’d go 4231, go with Lewis, Clark, Fede and Manq across the back, Willock and Longstaff in midfield, ASM, Almiron and Murphy left to right for the attacking three behind Wilson.

I agree with this, but I'd play matty not Sean and I'd play Joelinton not Murphy simply because we need at least one player that's more than 5 ft 5 up top

I'm going for a totally unexpected 3-1 win to the lads. If that happens I hereby promise to be magnanimous in victory when discussing the game with the roofers and builders I'm working alongside here in Melton Mowbray, if we lose l'm taking next week off.
